Yanni appreciation thread - who else likes his music besides me?
So, as the title asks, who else is a fan of Yanni's music? I've been revisiting Yanni's music the past week after many years of not listening, and I'm in awe of how excellent his music really is! Exactly as I remembered it from my childhood, and I realized something - I want to make music similar to that! (Google yielded very good results from my research, so no need for help this time, lol.)
His (reported) enviable hardware collection is the stuff of legends...

...but then again I got all I need with Korg Gadget, including the M1 (iM1/Darwin that is). I say "enviable" since, as a pianist, I'd love to have that collection of hardware synths and romplers. 🤣
Also, his music is very thoroughly thought out and seems to be more along the lines of Western Classical composition than looped music like I'm used to making. And according to this one interview, he also doesn't read traditional sheet music and instead just goes by feel.
I remember "Live at the Acropolis" when it was aired on the local PBS station. I always wanted to see Yanni live, until 2002/2003 (one of those years) when my parents took me to see him perform live! To this day, it was one of the best live performances I saw! Not only because I love the music of course, but also because of the sheer spectacle. (Okay, I won't lie, I still want to see Yanni perform live again, and I hope his tour will come back by me!)
So the questions are - who else is a fan of Yanni? What are your memories of him if you like his music? Do you have a favourite song and/or album? And, have you tried making music similar to his any time in the past or even present?

The best fucking concert! "Aria", based off a piece of Western Classical music, still makes my jaw drop everytime I watch it. This whole concert just leaves me speechless.
You can make that style with Staffpad… but the notation is a bitch. Still, the libraries are there and the free ones are pretty good now and cover all the orchestra with a lot of extras like keyboards, etc.
I worked really hard to find MIDI short cuts to skip the pencil input but it’s too buggy for large midi imports. The realtime MIdI input is also not great but it works and the resulting notation is insane for someone to read let alone play… no quantization help.
I listened to "Live at the Acropolis" for the first time just a year or two ago, and it blew me away, ensuing in multiple re-listens. Your post reminded me that listening again was long over-due (listening to it now as I type).
The story behind the album/concert (and how he risked $2M of his own funds, leaving him with $50k to his name until the breakout success of the album) is also incredible.
There’s a feature of Apple music that I love… it’s the “View Credits” option. The arranger and conductor of the orchestra for “Live at the Acropolis” is Shardad Rohani:

Like the Paul Buckmaster arrangements on the “Elton John” album, the music is elevated and hits me where I live.
@McD If only Staffpad had an AUv3 version driven by MIDI somehow. Anyways, I'm going to check the Wikipedia article out about Shardad after I post this reply.
@peanut_gallery I listened to "Live at the Acropolis" today before posting it here (right after I made the initial thread post that is), and just phenomenal! Also, that story is incredible! Yanni is definitely an artist dedicated to his craft, is passionate, and it reflects in his amazing music!
