How do you use 4Pockets Midi Strummer and/or Riffler Flow?
I own Midi Strummer and Riffler Flow and would like to use them as AUv3 plugins (in Loopy Pro) while working on song ideas and to create layers for song ideas.
Wondering how you find value in these plugins during your creative process, so I can use this knowledge along with reading the docs and my experimentation, as the basis for moving forward.
I am able to send chords from ChordBud to Midi Strummer and have it follow along with the incoming chords by setting Input to "Play Notes (MIDI Control)", but I'm not sure I'm setting things up correctly or getting the optimal output.
I'm new to a lot of this and may be getting confused by what options I see listed as StrummerFX, StrummerFX (MIDI) and StrummerFX (processor)...not sure if this is something one sees only when selecting in different contexts w/in Loopy Pro (ie: as a MIDI source or Audio Unit) or something you'd see also in AUM and other hosts.
Regardless, I've been able to make some progress with Strummer, but wondering if my expectations are wrong that if I have ChordBud sending a chord progression to StrummerFX and have Host Sync selected and Input selected and Arp selected, then it should follow the ChordBud progression.
I plan to use some of the Riffler Flow presets, but also would like to use it more dynamically if that's possible, sending a Chord Progression from, say ChordBud, and having Riffler Flow adapt it's riff to those incoming chords...Anyone using it this way or know if that's outside it's feature set?
As I said, any info you can share on how you use these plugins will inform my experimentation and help with some context as I read through the docs, so thanks in advance

Neither of the Riffler apps allow for dynamic chord input from other apps. You unfortunately have to program them. I feel like it was something the dev considered at one point but prob came up against ROI and technological barriers (I read that the guitar sounds are algorithmically chosen and would be hard to trigger dynamically without pre-entering chords)
Still I finder riffler(s) very useful but sometime I need to pipe the midi into other guitars (yonac) or to cover scales not available
Thanks @audiblevideo.
Can you elaborate a bit on " but sometime I need to pipe the midi into other guitars (yonac) or to cover scales not available "... Do you mean using Yonac ToneStack effect on output of Riffler Flow? Also, wondering what you mean by "to cover scales not available"...Thanks
That one is easy. The chosen host doesn't matter unless its midi implementation is limited in some way. Loopy Pro isn't limited. Plugins have no idea which host they're even running in.
Thanks @wim.
Sounds like this is the key question that would be helpful to have answered at this point:
If I have ChordBud sending a chord progression to Strummer and have Host Sync selected and Input selected and Arp selected, then should Strummer play arpeggios that follow the ChordBud progression? And for those in the know, any specific settings in Strummer to consider in order to make this work well, Thanks
Host Sync
On, Input set toPiano to Guitar ChordsThat is all you need.
Thanks @wim. Appreciate it
Both Riffler apps have MIDI out, but a small set of scales when compared to something like the Bud apps by Cem Olcay. Missing things like Locrian or Bebop scales. So a workflow would be in AUM putting Riffler in the midi channel (audio works too as long as you mute the output) and connecting it to Mela, Brams Scaler (in Rozeta), Brams Mozaic (with a scales oriented script) or similar to force the closest scale in Riffler to the ones available in the "scale" app.
As far as Yonac goes. Yonac has two apps that are guitar related. Using the MIDI output to Steel Guitar works and if you need more cabs and effects you can turn the ones in Steel Guitar off and use ToneStack (Pro) or any other amp sim.
Riffler > Mozaic > Steel Guitar > Amp sim
Thanks for elaborating @audiblevideo, appreciate it
Be careful using an external sequencer to "push the buttons" in Strummer. You have to send the note on just slightly ahead of the beat, so that the strummer system is ready to play the next chord on the down beat. It's not instantaneous.
I suppose I should elaborate. All "Play Notes (MIDI Control)" does is let an incoming MIDI note select which of the 16 pads is "pressed", so which of 16 chords is being strummed/arpeggiated. And the incoming notes that do that are 0-15... the lowest C and the next 15. Incoming notes above that perform other functions, acting as switches for things like turning the arpeggiator on and off, and so on.
As said above, if you want incoming chords to turn into strums, you use "Piano to Chord".
That said, if the incoming chords are sequenced (I use Chordjam a lot for chord sequencing in other contexts), I often find that the first note of a following chord will be the bottom note of the preceding chord. It just takes a tick of time for the thing to process.
@garden, Thanks...appreciate your taking the time to share this info
I would strongly suggest you watch the developer's YouTube video for Strummer. Paul's videos are really good and he goes into detail about how things work. I save them to hard disk as a "video manual".
Thanks @Simon
