  • Hi. I listened to several of the tracks. Ambient? Soundscape? Atmospheric? I assume you consider this album one of those genres. Anyway, I'm not qualified to comment on the music itself because I never really got into these genres. I know a lot of people listen to this to fall asleep. I've just never been a fan. But I do have to comment on the mix on a few of these songs.

Here is the spectral analysis from the 3rd track,

    https://i.imgur.com/xqr9pVH.jpeg

Notice how it's concentrated around 100 to 600hz with the upper frequencies being very low? This makes for a muddy mix. You might want to try a little EQ and or Multiband Compression to even things out a bit.

Anyway, happy holidays and good luck with the album.

  • Thank you - I couldn't see the analysis but I'll take another listen. In some cases I was looking for a more 'raw' unpolished sound but I take your point...👍

  • The rawness of it is actually what gives it some of the power in the mix. Take that out and it will become wimpy. I like the fullness - too much music is ruined by remixing to sound like it was made by machines - keep it organic and sounding like it was made by humans, just like this.

Thanks - I listened through again and don't feel I want to revisit the mix...

  • I skimmed through the album for now (I'm trying to catch up with creations I missed while at the same time creating my next piece of music), and I can't wait to give this a full, uninterrupted listen. ❤️ I really love what you've done.

If you could, @enkaytee , could you share with me and others what app(s) you used for the creation of this? Was it Logic, Cubasis, AUM, a combination therein? :) What is your favorite reverb to lather onto the sounds? Again, I really love what you did here.

Thanks man! I'll try to make a more comprehensive list later but one thing I will say is I very rarely use a traditional DAW. I like to record 'live' in one take so employ a range of plugin hosts and direct recording apps on my iMac. I particularly like Element by Kushview and Audio Hijack by Rogue Amoeba. Anyway thanks again and I'll do a more detailed list soon...👍

OK - here's a confession - only one of the tracks was created entirely on an ipad. All of the others are a mix of hardware and software based on an ageing iMac (but sometimes linking the ipad to the Mac with Duo / Siderack to add an iOS app to the track).
So if you can forgive me for that here's some more info - I use a variety of hardware - generally small desktop synths and generators / sequencers sourced from places like etsy and Tindie but particularly kit from Bastl Instruments, Decadebridge, Ellitone, Synthux Academy, Sid Rockett and many more.
Software includes Kontakt libraries from my mate Pendle at Sound Dust, synths from Imaginando, Sugarbytes, Arturia (Pigments), Dawesome and UVI (Falcon) and some incredible effects from Lunacy Audio (BEAM), Rhizomatic (Synestia) plus a load of others...(part of the issue is that because I record live I'm pretty bad at keeping accurate notes of exactly what I've used in each track but I'm trying to improve that situation!)
I guess my main tool for reverb (though it can do so much more) is the Microcosm effect pedal from Hologram Electronics - it's probably featured on around 60% of the tracks.
Sorry this has been a bit of a ramble but I hope it makes some sort of sense!

It does. :) I'm glad to read about your process and such. And, let's be honest. This place has evolved quite a lot over the years since its AudioBus Forum days. And, we have a community based around iOS music creation, but not really strictly, you know? So, this album counts. I had a chance to listen in full, and this is the kind of music I love to listen to when waking up with a nice cuppa. ❤️

Of course mate. Now I have a few more things to catch up listening to, including something by one of my friends, and Pulse Emitter's discography. https://pulseemitter.bandcamp.com/ I can't make good music if I don't "fill my cup" each morning full of inspiration.

  • Just listened to your album all the way through… you should be very happy, it’s a great piece of work 🙏
Possibly counting waves was my favourite but it’s a tough call as I enjoyed them all.
There’s a consistency of sounds / mixing / production (not sure what really) that makes it all hang together nicely !

  • Nice piece of work, enjoyed listening to it! frenq

Glad you enjoyed it - I'm working on getting a new album uploaded soon and have got a couple of labels supporting me...

  • I enjoyed the composition and the sounds, just not the eq and finalising. As was said earlier, I find it very muddy in the low mids. Are you mixing in an untreated room ? A multiband compressor would help. On that note I would still say great job mostly because you finished and published it. Hopefully learning a lot on the way. Win win !

Thanks for the feedback...To be honest it's pretty much all recorded live on a desk in a small bedroom - there's no real composition and mixing is pretty basic - I just like to capture the sounds as they happen. However, in future I'll pay more attention to the mix and probably do some post recording mastering...
