Connect guitar to iPad/phone
I want to connect my guitar to my iPad - I’m looking at an iRig - prices vary from £3 for a cheap version to £30 - is it worth paying the extra, or is there a better alternative?
Thanks in advance!👍

Don’t use the very cheap headphone jack version, it has a problem with crosstalk. Make sure you get one with the right connections for your iPad
Unless you have a headphone jack on your phone you need an Irig USB or irig HD.
Both are a lot more than £30.
If your phone has a USB-C port get the iRig USB.
You can also use the USB with a lighting adapter but that adds a bit more cost but has the major benefit of being compatible with future phones via USB C
You can also get things like the tonex plug or fender mustang — but again a lot more than $30.
My money would go on the irig USB. It comes with iOS versions of Amplitube and Tonex so you get some pretty decent tones with it out of the box.
Anything cheaper would be a waste of money in my very humble opinion. Buy once. Buy well.
Do NOT buy the first generation iRig device. Just to reiterate the above sentiment.
Why an iRig? There are a lot better options out there, although these are cheap.
I swear by my iRig Pro Duo IO - it has connectivity with lightning, usb-A and usb-C iPhones, can run on batteries, two in ports, headphone jack, midi ports. I’ve had mine since 2021 and never had any issues. I also have the Axe IO One but wouldn’t recommend that unless you specifically want really high guitar sample rates or want to use ToneX for captures on desktop. It requires a powered USB hub so less portable.
I also have the original headphone irig and it’s a fun novelty at this point for older devices with a headphone jack but shouldn’t be a main interface.
I’m not attached to an iRig - I want to connect my guitar to my phone/ipad and it’s one way of doing it - I’m all ears if there are better options - doesn’t have to be cheap👍
Definitely take a look around as there are lots of options. Some of the amp in a box solutions are great too - I have a NUX Amp Academy and think it’s fantastic tons of connector options and sounds great.
The Behringer guitar link is good. I think you can only get them secondhand now.

I use the Positive Grid Riff and I like it quite a lot.
Are you looking for something portable to go to gig or you staying at home ?
Home use. Recording, and my lad wants to use fender’s tone app.
Any interface can be used to plug your guitar as long as it as an instrument input also called a z-input. If money is not an issue I would get something a little more quality. Maybe a stereo input or 2. Maybe a mic pre for recording a vocalist. Who knows were your music journey will take you. I had no ideas my metal project would take a almost 10 years hiatus and I would end up producing Synthwave.
I had a steinberg when I started IOS. It was good but the instrument input had a difficult with the high output of my guitar pickup. Now I have Focusrite Scarlet 4i4 and I am very satisfied. You could go for the 2i2.
