Yes, it's possible to record an audio track (including from an AUv3 instrument) and create reusable loops in Apple's ecosystem, similar to turning clips into loops in Ableton Live.
However, the process differs depending on whether you're using GarageBand on iOS (iPhone/iPad) or GarageBand/Logic Pro on Mac, and it's not as seamless on iOS.
On Mac (GarageBand or Logic Pro) – Closest to Ableton
This is the easiest and most direct way, very similar to Ableton's clip-to-loop workflow.
The new loop is now added to your Apple Loops library. It will automatically match tempo and key in any project, just like stock Apple Loops. You can find and reuse it in the Loop Browser across projects.
Logic Pro has the same feature and shares the loop library with GarageBand on Mac.
On iOS (GarageBand for iPhone/iPad)
GarageBand iOS does not have a built-in way to create or add custom Apple Loops to the library from recorded audio or AUv3 performances. You can:
But you can't tag and save your own recordings as searchable, reusable Apple Loops in the browser.
Workarounds:
- Export your project to iCloud Drive and open it in GarageBand or Logic Pro on Mac to create the Apple Loop there (as described above).
- Import external pre-tagged Apple Loops (AIFF files with metadata) via Files > Browse, but they may appear under "Audio Files" rather than the full Apple Loops section.
- Use regions as "loops" directly on the timeline without converting them.
Apple's focus on iOS GarageBand is more on quick creation with stock loops and Live Loops (which is inspired by Ableton's Session View for clip triggering), rather than custom loop library management.
Can Apple Loops Be on the Same Main Timeline?
Yes, absolutely — this works the same in both iOS and Mac versions.
This is similar to Ableton, where clips/loops integrate into the Arrangement View.
If you're primarily on iOS and want the full custom Apple Loop experience like Ableton, consider upgrading to Logic Pro on Mac (or using the Mac version of GarageBand as a bridge). For pure iOS looping workflows, Live Loops in GarageBand is great for performance and clip-style creation, but less flexible for custom library building.
Thanks very much..I've been interested in having this feature for years, and now you have explained it well!!
BM3 can actually save a sliced sample as an 'Apple Loop'. It will save the file as *.aif file so all the needed meta-data is embedded. These 'sliced' files work fine when imported to BeatHawk or GarageBand or any other app that supports Apple Loops. The export is done from save menu BM3's Sample Editor.
To my knowledge BM3 is one of the few (if not only) apps on iOS that can create Apple Loops...
BM3 has, like all the "updates," installed and was ahead of the game in many ways.
Samu, do you remember the steps to save an audio clip as an Apple Loop? Thank you in advance.
Should be the same when the Audi clip is open in the sample/file editor (it’s in the same menu where you save the file). If not save and load the audio file to a pad first and then save it from the sample-editor.
Many thanks ! 🙏
