Preferred mini controller
I am wanting to get a new travel keyboard/controller that can also be useful in the home studio set up and wondered what were peoples suggestions and why?
Was considering the Korg NanoKontrol Studio which is somewhat old now but does have Bluetooth which is something I was interested in to cut down on wired connections. Mvave have a controller with bluetooth but there is little info about that.
Whats your choice?

M-wave SMK 37 Pro. Full black keys.
Bluethoot midi out, bluethoot audio In so y ou connect your headphones to the keyboard, and the Ipad stands alone somewhere else.
It also has DX7 sounds, so you can use the keyboard alone. Can also load your own DX7 patches.
Not the best feeling keyboard, but I needed more than 25 keys. I'm having a great time with it.
I voted for the Akai because I've owned Arturia and Novation and they didn't last long. I've never used the other 2 but I think I'd either try the Akai, or go with the Mvave smk25, thinking I'll be able to by 2 for the same price as the Akai.
Depends on what “controller” means for you. Does it need to have piano keys? My preferred travel & studio controller is the Novation Launchpad Mini MK3.
Thank you for the replies this helped
The Korg NanoKontrol Studio is ticking all the boxes apart from the fact that you need a PC or Mac to configure it.
Yeah I got a used nanokey studio. Its perfect.
Assuming you mean the NanoKey Studio (not NanoKontrol), I have had the most current versions of all of those except the Mvave.
Each has pros and cons:
Novation - great chord and arpeggio custom modes, really useful. Brilliant with desktop DAWs, particularly Ableton and Logic, but pretty bad keybed with small keys. Also, transport controls don’t work properly with iOS DAWs and iPads think it is a QWERTY keyboard which messes up text entry in some DAWs.
Arturia - great keybed and keys, but using pads for transport is a bit annoying.
Akai - best all-round IMHO, particularly for iOS, doesn’t need a desktop for customisation, everything can be done from the keyboard.
Korg - Bluetooth works well, but doesn’t transfer well across devices. Keys are what they are (pretty ordinary). Integration with Korg Gadget is excellent, but no transport controls.
Good luck with your choice.
I like the Xkey Air (25 or 37 keys).
I’ve had the opposite experience. My AKAI MPK is the crappiest keyboard I’ve ever had. I don’t think all 25 keys ever worked ok at the same time. So maybe it’s luck of the draw.
I’ve got a Novation XioSynth from the 90s that still works fine. I would use it more if I hadn’t broken the case gigging with it. But it still works flawlessly — I wish Novation still made a small controller with audio and midi interfaces built in!
I also have an Arturia at my office and a Novation Launchkey MK4 to replace the Akai.
If you use Mac or Pc the software bundle you get with the Launchkey is fantastic.
Agree that the Launchkey has by far the best features with Mac/PC DAWS - particularly Live. I just struggle with how bad I find its keybed, particularly its tiny keys and poor velocity sensitivity (although you can improve that a bit by remapping velocity in the DAW).
Are you referring to the new MPK Mk4 when you say it was the crappiest keyboard you have had? The new model is totally different to the Mk3, which I thought had a pretty poor keybed. The new model has larger keys and is much more playable for me. Still not quite as good as Arturia though. My all time favourite mini keyboard has been Yamaha’s Reface CP.
Would love to see more controllers with built-in audio interfaces - even if only for output like the Korg Keystage.
I’m surprised there aren’t more Bluetooth MIDI controllers. I have a couple Korgs (Micro Air 49 and Nanokey Studio), but I’m looking for something even smaller: specifically, something that can share a lap with my cat.
Might not be as small as u want, but I've been happy with this Bluetooth keyboard:

Thank you. I’ve wondered about that one. I like my M-Vave footswitch.
The Pro with 37 keys is great too.
Thanks for the continued additions here
Now im looking for a very portable device to connect 2 ipads for recording one into the other. I have an old ipad with Camels Alchemy and wanted to record the sounds into my Pro 11 ipad in cubasis. I would want to use bluetooth midi to play the synth.
Was considering Momix Pro mixer but wanted someones input who has one?
