Anybody attempting Jamuary 2026 ?

Some of us (and you know who you are !) attempted this in 2025 and believe it or not it’s nearly time to have another go …
Basically it’s doing whatever you need to do to produce a piece of music everyday for the whole of January.
Hardware, software, composed, improvised, beautifully produced, rough and ready… doesn’t matter at all. Any genre, any length…

Some information, although it’s pretty sparse, is available here…
https://jamuary.org/
https://llllllll.co/t/jamuary-2026

Searching YouTube and SoundCloud will find plenty of examples.

All of course completely optional, chilling out and doing bog all in January is equally valid 😊

Possible if I don't care about any kind of quality but impossible if I do. And I write a lot of music, having done 8 albums in 2025.

  • "(and you know who you are !)"

    👀

I might participate in a couple of days. <3 Before giving up on drawing, I did successfully complete Inktober 2025. I don't think I made it all the way through Jamuary 2025, but only because I lost interest in creating a piece of long-form Ambient in Cubasis 3 every day. 🤣 This coming Jamuary, I'm going to vary things up and hopefully make it to the end!

  • Have no time for this B) frenq

  • Does it have to be original? or can it be covers? I just got my upstairs setup for live music/worship sets. Definitely thinking about posting some of that.

  • The way I look at it @wagtunes is similar to when an artiste that does a quick pencil sketch prior to a full watercolour. The pencil sketch can still be high quality even though it might take an order of magnitude less time 🕰️
Long form ambient is a tricky one I think @jwmmakerofmusic just because of the sheer time it takes… is short form ambient a thing ?
If I’m making the rules @TheAudioDabbler then covers are allowed 😊

Anything under 5 minutes is what I consider short form. The way I did my long-form Ambient pieces was to "notate"/"plot out" the track in a notebook, and then I'd follow along in a DAW. I did that so much that it became second nature to me. However, I got tired of producing only just longform Ambient, and so I burned out for a bit until I started producing in other genres again. 😂

  • What a great idea. Happy to get involved and make myself to do something daily. Maybe even get a bunch of ideas for future tracks out of it

  • Apart from a few days, Ive pretty much made something musical every day this year. Not finished a single track though!

This year passed, I bought a Mac, controllers and lots of software. Ive changed my music making from noodles to structured songs ready for lyrics to be added - just awaiting my mic purchase early next year.

I dabble with lots of ideas or so at a time and then choose some to continue with. Out of the hundreds of ideas I created througout this last year, ive got about 20 that are in various states of 'awaiting vocals' that will probably end up being actual tracks eventually.

Ive done a few things that enabled me to make so much music throughout the last year:

    1. Made an idea at least most days while learning to use my new software. Learn a new technique, make a track using that technique.
    2. Spent way less time chatting or posting online. While sharing can be fun, it takes up time. Ive spent that time learning and having fun making music instead. Although I still cave and post occasionally.
    3. Learnt to balance the different aspects of this hobby better - I have time seperated for sound creation, idea creation, playing practice, technique and software learning, setup maintenance and building tracks.
    4. Ive prioritised my personal fun. My music is and will only ever be a hobby. My longterm aim is still to produce finished tracks im happy with, but my main aim is to enjoy every moment of making music - enjoying the journey over the destination.
    5. While I still like the pleasure from new purchases, ive pretty much got everything I need now software wise. While my Mac software has been more expensive then my iPad purchases yearly, those small priced ipad app purchases got a little out of control over the years. I find the greater cost of Mac software to help me limit purchasing for the sake of....another time consumming part of the hobby.

Merry Christmas all and hope you get time for your hobby between life, love and family!

  • Go for it @noisyninja 👍 … I’ve found in previous years that some of my quickly created daily pieces eventually make their way into more fully formed creations as you suggest.
Some great points there @Fruitbat1919 that we could all learn from. There’s a philosophical discussion to be had about ‘finished’ I think but perhaps not in this thread 🤔
I hope as many people as possible have a go 😊

My “rigs” tend to have multiple MIDI FX apps and I think that only AUM supports more than 1 MIDI FX on a track.
If I’m wrong I might consider using one of the listed DAW’s. Too bad, Auria (Pro) doesn’t even get mentioned.

On the other side of the ledger there are the Groove Box apps that I’m sure a lot of regulars use. Do any of them
Support serial chains of MidiFX instances? Drambo maybe?

I think Loopy Pro probably the most effective “DAW-like” IOS app.

    • enjoying the journey over the destination.

    A nugget of wisdom

  • A bit dragged out but I found myself agreeing with a lot of it… good luck for Jamuary 👍

  • I’m going to give it a shot. I’ll be out of town at a music festival next weekend but that might be all the more opportunity to jam. Worst case I’ll try to capture something each day and post after.

I'm all set for Jamuary! Either I'll do it on my iPhone, or my iPad, or swap between each.

EDIT: Forgot to mention I'll probably use Cubasis for this venture, especially now that I have access to iM1 and iWaveStation as AUv3 (besides Korg's other AUv3s), as well as want to make good usage of my other AUv3s and such.

  • What’s the best way to post Jamuary content?

  • Good question @FizzyLizzy27 … I’m in two minds 🧠🧠
One approach is to publish each days effort here, this seems to create some initial interest but it may wane over the month. Also you may be creating an expectation that you will make it to the end 🤔
If doing a daily post here I think I’d just have a single thread with the posts in.
An alternative approach, the one I took last year and I think I’ll do it again this year is to just post one thread at the end of the month with links to any playlists of the creations.
This saves a bit of effort and anybody interested enough to seek out your creations on SoundCloud, YouTube or whatever your hosting site of choice is can do so if they want.
Not sure if that helps… basically no right or wrong… just whatever suites you !

  • I like the idea of just posting in this thread. I'm talking myself into it haha

I like that as well. If no one’s opposed I’d vote that. Otherwise I’ll probably just keep it to one thread with all my stuff.
