Garageband Smart Drummer - your opinions
As I‘m upgrading to a shiny new iPad I wonder if you take advantage of these smart drummers to come up with at least half way decent drum grooves. Your opinions are much sought after and welcome!

There are so many options for creating drum patterns using GarageBand (Drummer, Smart Drums, Beat Sequencer, manual MIDI drum input, drum plugins, loops) that there's no way a person could ever run out of ideas, especially using drum and percussion styles in different combinations.
I've been using GarageBand as long as it's been on iPad and for a lot longer than that on desktop. You'll get out of GarageBand as much as you're willing to spend to refine to your taste.
“Smart Drummer” is an oxymoron… Smart Drummers are Oxy Morons.

I can’t address the question because Garage Band is anti-competitive and I like buying DAW’s and NOT using them either.
I use the DAW-less DAW and will buy anything @j_liljedahl makes. Imagine if he made a drummer.

I generally make my own drum beats by playing GB’s drum pads live to the metronome (acoustic or electronic). I don’t think I’ve used smart drummer in years! But yeah NeuM is right…there are a LOT of options; hell you can use the auto drummer for the kick drum parts and just live play the snare , hats, ect too!
Exactly. All the options in GB tend to get overlooked and are well worth a revisit.
The drummers are great for ‘following’ your bass lines by having some more dynamic fills and ghost notes to groove with your rhythms. I love how natural the drumming sounds, as well as how specific you can get the drum parts to sound even though they are based on prerecorded grooves.
This process is a little time consuming for me when it comes to putting together a longer piece with transitions and stuff though… because it does require a lot of saving and exporting the drum loops as separate audio tracks due to the walled garden workflow of GarageBand… I love so much about GarageBand, but the limitations and quirks can stifle my creativity when it comes to organizing parts for an arrangement etc. it would be nice if the dynamic drummers could actually record the midi data instead of just audio tracks, for example.

I believe GB used to be able to put automated and manual drums on the same track and now it can't. I used to mix drum tracks all the time and it was great for customizing.
I use the Drummer all the time and I think it's awesome. The grooves always sound great, and they are very natural and realistic.
I used to prefer making my own drums, but IMO the Drummers in GB and Logic are hard to beat.
This track uses the Drummer in Logic, which is the same as the Drummers in GB:
@dermichl I agree with @richardyot GB/Logic Drummers sound natural and realistic and the ability to 'follow' other instruments/tracks is very cool. After some experimentation I found that using 2 (or 3) Drummers works even better by splitting the kit up. In this collaboration with @AndyHoneybone I used 3 Tyrell Drummers: one on kick and snare; one on toms; the last on cymbals. Having that kind of control over each part of the kit, i.e. which track to follow and amount of fills etc. made it even more realistic. Give it a try.
