Recording in Loopy Pro - Lossless
I’ve been experimenting with recording combined outputs, individual colour groups and individual inputs in Loopy. Previously I was sending a signal to my MacBook from my interface into GarageBand, but I like how I can record individual inputs and colour groups in Loopy, whereas I was only recording the output in GarageBand.
My plan is to then send the files to GarageBand to further mix the tracks and master the recordings to release. I’ll be exporting from GarageBand as a wav file for Bandcamp etc.
I tried recording lossless, but the file size was massive and my iPad couldn’t handle it, especially as I’m doing 10-15 minute ambient / noise / etc tracks.
What’s the non-lossless file type and would it be okay to use those tracks in GarageBand, sound quality wise?
Comments
From the manual:
Whether it's usable or not depends on your perception.
Thanks. I’ll guess I’ll try and give it a shot with AAC/mp4. It’s not like what I’m doing is audiophile quality, however I don’t want to be trying to make something sound better in GarageBand if I’m starting off with a crappy recording.
Does the file format in “System Settings” affect the recorded output? Or is that the recorded loops or samples?
The non-lossless recording format is .wav. FWIW, the non-compressed lossless wav, caf, and air files all are roughly the same save at the same bit depth and sample rate. GarageBand can use those files.
I'd suggest doing some test recordings with the lossless and lossy options. Let your ears decide if the extra size of the lossless recording is worth it.
Awesome. Thank you.
As I said my recordings aren’t exactly perfect, and I do end up using things like tape noise and stuff, but I don’t want to have recordings with horrible treble or anything.
I also love the idea of being able to record my live sets straight to Loopy when I play out.
I just tried recording non-lossless and the files are m4a, not wav?
Current System Settings on my iPad.
I know I can import pretty much anything into GarageBand, which is fine.
I guess I’ll try and record a “proper” song later and see what it sounds like.
Yes, that's correct, as mentioned in the manual.
Sorry that was a typo. I meant lossless is wav lossy AAC
