Seeking recommendation for a small mixer for iPad and Mac audio to headphones

I'm looking for a small, inexpensive mixer that will allow me to input my iPad and Mac stereo audio outputs for combined headphone output. I'd prefer stereo Mini 3.5mm phone jack inputs and output (if possible). Small size is preferred for real estate reasons.

Thanks in advance!

  • Probably good if you can provide a price range as inexpensive might mean different things to different people.

    Is a USB cable small enough and within your budget?

    You can send the iPad audio out to the Mac via iDAM and then use the headphone out of the Mac to hear them both.

    Bastl Bestie quality mini mixer

    Amazon has at least 4 options if the Bastl is too $

  • Thanks for the replies...

    @michael_m
    Cost: Up to $100ish Cdn$ (if poss)

    @wim
    Unless I'm mistaken, iDAM requires the audio and MIDI (which I'm not using) to flow through a DAW on the Mac. This is not what I need. I just want to feed my headphones with both Mac and iPad as directly as possible without having to use software on the Mac.

    Basically, I want to use NS2 on the iPad and be able to plunk away on my MIDI controller at any time (while I'm on the Mac (but not in a music app) and hear the output.

    @audiblevideo
    The Bastl Bestie quality mini mixer is more than I want to spend, but appreciate the suggestion. Almost all of the mixers that I see on Amazon have mono input channels. I want to direct 2 stereo outputs (Mac and iPad) to a single stereo output for headphone monitoring.

    Cheers!

    I thought that might be the case. I use Hosting AU as a very light DAW when I want to do things like that.

    I think I may have stumbled across another way to do it without a DAW when using iDAM but can't test if I'm remembering correctly or not at the moment. I think it was through using Multi-Output Device on MacOS. Could be that was to do something else though.

    [edit] nvm.

    This 3.5mm interface audio mixer combines the stereo sound from two channels into one channel output.

    My goal is to keep the solution to an audio-only signal path. And, end up with something as small as possible (I have a very small desk space already crowded with Nektar Impact LX61+ MIDI controller, MacMini 4 with multiple SSDs, keyboard, 2 x 27" 4K monitors and my iPad Pro M1 with Magic Keyboard).

    The difficult bit is finding a mixer with stereo inputs (on a single channel strip) for the two headphone outputs (Mac and iPad), rather than having 4 mono channel strips. I'm not looking for EQ etc, just volume knobs/faders.

    Thanks!

    I saw this, but the reviews indicate several problems such as high noise and heat issues.

    I'm sure that Behringer has something that would work, but I thought canvassing might help me narrow it down.

    Cheers!

    If finding a mixer with stereo inputs is too limiting, maybe headphone splitter cables could be used with something along the lines of this: https://a.co/d/1BK7bcd

    [edit] nvm on that link. No panning.
    But the the part about splitter cables still stands if you can find something more suitable.

    I know you're looking for recommendations from people who have tried things out, which I can't give, but I did see this as I was looking into things out of curiosity:

    I'm tempted to try it myself.

    I’d take a look an one of these:

    Behringer 502S Analog Mixer with USB Streaming Interface

    They’re USB class compliant so it’s also an audio interface you can use with the Mac or iPad which would potentially be very useful as it will allow you to record directly into your DAW and mix DAW output with other inputs such as hardware synths, microphone etc. with options for what you send to the phones. You also have additional outputs to send to monitors or 2 track recorder/sampler etc.

    You obviously don’t have to use it as a
    USB audio interface but having a mixer that can also be used as one would open up lots of extra possibilities.

  • Similar to @wim i haven’t tried this but maybe it’s viable for your needs.

    That looks interesting. I had been thinking of searching for something light to host plugins for mastering, and that seems like something that would be a good fit.

    (Sorry for the derail.)

    Ah if only life was this simple...

    Unfortunately, you can't passively combine audio outputs in this way without risking output driver damage (high current flow and heat), as well as signal loss and crosstalk/noise etc.

    The cheap Behringer mx400 has 4 ins and 1 out, unfortunately mono only. But looking at amazon and other websites suggestions, there are many "clones" that are stereo. Best of luck not buying the crappy one 🙂

    Edit : some more things in there https://www.reddit.com/r/synthesizers/comments/1mroa3a/cheap_and_compact_mixer_with_2_stereo_pairs_inputs/

  • https://www.behringer.com/product.html?modelCode=0601-AAZ

    This is my current small mixer. Less than $100 new, but I paid $40 for mine used.

  • Rolls as a wide selection of small mixer maybe you can find one for your need.
