Song Of The Month Club - January 2026
What is the Song of the Month Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.
We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material
And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

Comments
My entry for the month, a bit different to my usual shoegaze/alt rock, with a more acoustic feel. The verse melody came to me in a dream, and I was able to remember it after I woke up.
Lyrics in the spoiler.
You threw it all away on the back of whim
You promised not to stray but you couldn’t resist it babe
That’s not how you were made
You're just not like that babe
I wanted you forever but you couldn’t begin
We flew around together but you couldn’t stay up there babe
That’s not how you were made
You're just not like that babe
You will be, a total mystery
So blind I couldn't see
That what you were to me
Was not reality
I wondered what to say with my head in a spin
You always found a way way with the walls closing on me babe
That’s not how you were made
You're just not like that babe
You threw it all away on the breath of the wind
You promised you would stay but you couldn’t get through it babe
That’s not how you were made
You're just not like that babe
If you, were there right in front of me
A truth I could not see
Just too illusory
An empty fantasy
You threw it all away on the back of whim
You promised not to stray but you couldn’t resist it babe
That’s not how you were made
You're just not like that babe
Beautiful song! I will remark that your lyric writing is far more advanced than mine, How on earth can I get as good as you with lyric writing? You can answer here for all to read, or in DMs if you wish.
Anyways, I'll try and make a song for tomorrow. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to everyone's offerings here!
Thanks - lyrics are (for me at least) the hardest part of the whole process. I generally do several passes, making changes every time until I am happy.
First pass: find some words that fit the meter of the melody. Generally these will just be generic and uninspiring.
Second pass: go back and make changes, trying to include specific imagery or details. This will improve things a little and get rid of the generic and cliché bits.
Third and Fourth passes: keep refining until I find better words, phrases, and images.
Lyrics are like a puzzle: you are constrained by rhyme and meter, so you have to find a way to get meaningful words into that structure, it's not easy but the more time you put in the better the end result will be. I usually spend at least a week going back and forth on the lyrics to any one song.
I find it helps to be specific, as in create specific images and/or tell specific stories.
This is solid advice right here! Thank you mate.
I think that's where I fell short - I assume the first pass is "good enough". I need to learn to go back and edit lyrics and such until they are more solid and inspired. Cheers.
This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Solo for the violin, cello, flute, oboe, and bassoon; Noire for the piano; and Continua for the background instrument.
After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.
It's titled The Valley.
Sad to say I won't be giving this a like, because I already gave it a like upon first listening a while ago. ❤️😆 Lol. But man, this definitely is still a beautiful piece of music. I'm relistening to it now matter of fact. Such a graceful piece of music.
I think this has one of your best vocal performances (and recording quality is fantastic too). It has your usual memorable chorus hook which is already being a bit of an ear worm... The strings add a nice touch without being distracting and overall it's another well written, well crafted song.
I have no idea what this actually is. I made this last year and don't really know what to do with it but as I don[t have anything to post I thought I'd at least start the year with something I've not yet shared.
It's kind of almost a remix of an old Burnt Earth song but other than the words "locked inside my head" and a partial chord sequence it's completely new. Stirngs, cello solos, 303s, 909s and a cheesy vocoder. Not sure they belong together but that shouldn't stop me trying either...
Another slice of dark electronica with semi-orchestral elements. I love the driving groove, and the squelchy filter abuse.
The strings are great, much edgier-sounding than traditional strings, so they have an air of menace about them. The vocoded vocal is catchy and persistent and works well.
If they didn't belong together, we wouldn't have this awesome piece of music you made. I really love it. Some NiN Industrial vibes.
Thanks
I’m glad I managed to get a bit of menace in there!
True! Or anything else… I don’t have anything on the go at the moment — too strapped for time and energy!
And thank you. I’m glad you like it!!
The amount of stuff being posted in the creations section is a bit overwhelming with all the Jamuary stuff so apologies for not keeping up with it.
No worries, my friend. I will have an actual song to post here sooner or later.
I have a thread dedicated to my Jamuary stuff. Consists mostly of quickly-made Ambient, just a forewarning. 😂
But yeah, I plan to post a song here soon as one of my Jamuary entries. Thinking another love song for my girlfriend. She's quite the muse.
Haven't posted in a while in the SOTMC... been spending most of recent music time on mixing my first album (at long last...) anyway, Let's start the year with this funny track from last year based on an acoustic loop from @pbelgium
Nice dream and good memory @richardyot. I like this song a lot, but as it was playing the vocal/melody made me want to hear a more rock/punk vibe, something like The Cure.
Very beautiful @DavidEnglish. I see the track is over 10 minutes long and think I'm not going to listen to the end, but the interaction between the instruments just carries you away off into the peaceful distance. Thanks.
Great track @klownshed, there's so much going on, so I'm not sure I would like to be locked inside your head - I have a simple mind. The background whispers and 'cheesy' vocoder bits sound good to me and the pulsing beat is addictive.
Great to listen to this again @JanKun, a killer track!
Reminds me a bit of KMFDM. I really like this one.
I think my aforementioned song will be posted in next month's SOTMC. I just can't seem to get the lyrics working for my song. But, I will still comment here on others' music.
Great re-imagining of the original riff, I really love the beffy bass and drums and the overall swampy vibe you created. It really grooves as well.
Very serene and meditative, the solo string instruments are beautifully played.
And just FYI to the few people that post here, this will be the last SOTMC for the foreseebale future. Reasons for stopping have been discussed elsewhere, but I'm taking a break from the forum until things change for the better.
It was a good ten-year run!
I discussed with my good friend Richard in private, and I'll take over SOTMC starting in February so the tradition doesn't die out. I'll just simply copy/paste what Richard writes in his initial posts, and I'll definitely be sure to check out all the wonderful submissions that come in and comment on them.
That said, I'm unsure if I'll be capable of submitting a song for February, but only because I'm currently feeling a little bit of burn out from Jamuary. But fwiw, I'll submit my instrumental of "Secret Love", which is Synthwave Pop (Synth Pop perhaps, lol).
This was originally to have lyrics, but I honestly am burnt out entirely on lyric writing for the time being. 🫣
Cheers all.
I really like all the synth tones and timbres, and the production is excellent.
Th track is uplifting with a great groove, I can imagine dancing to this one at 3am somewhere.
Thank you mate.
Glad to see you here, even if for a brief moment.
@richardyot
I really like the acoustic tone and less-processed voice in this one. It’s as though your previous songs had a similar acoustic core hiding inside that provided the backbone for everything else that was built on top. Kind of a back-to-basics song that might serve as a blueprint for constructing more elaborate songs later on.
@klownshed
Evocative opening with a strong, driving beat. Love the electronic sounds and vocoder. Has a nice liquid feel to it, as though it could suddenly shift or flow into any direction. Progresses really well without becoming overly complex. It’s retro without being derivative.
@JanKun
What an amazing trip that seems to burst out of a simple guitar loop! Full of wonderful twists and turns. It skims like a flat rock over a limitless lake as it dips in and out of various musical genres. Those genres include an inspired tilt-of-the-hat to foundation-era blues.
@jwmmakerofmusic
Powerful pulsating beat that slowly reveals its melodic base as it progresses to a strong finish. Almost a textbook case of how to build a bridge from one kind of music to another, very different kind of music. A song where you’re not quite sure what you’re listening to until you reach the end where all revealed.
@DavidEnglish Thank you so much, my friend.
Yeah, that song was originally to have lyrics, but I got burnt out on lyric writing by that point, lol.
Wow! I love the combination of orchestral elements and electronic elements. Great Job 👏
I got a “the bourne identity” vibe
One mixing feedback thing.
The Violin (or Viola) does not blend very well into the mix.
You could add a little bit of string ensemble with the solo violin or play with the reverb or cut out some mid frequencies from the violin
Apologies Richard, you know I’m always late with such things but very sad that you feel the need to step back from the SOTMC due to (I assume) the recent content of the forum.
Such a shame that a wonderfully creative thread is impacted by comments and discussions that are really nothing to do with music.
I notice that @jwmmakerofmusic has picked up your baton (hopefully the conducting variety) and I’m sure Jim will do a great job although I for one will miss your input 🙏
I'm going to miss Richard's input too. I'm just simply doing a copy/paste per month of Richard's initial post and then listening to all the wonderful creations.
