Best Granular Synths

Hi Guys,
What are the best Granular Synths in your opinion? With many options to shape the sound.
Best wishes

  • That’s a difficult question.

    FRMS: includes FM in its sound-shaping options, has many superb sounds as IAP.
    Fluss: modulation monster with a physics-based engine
    Borderlands: unique playing surface, lends itself more towards looping and soundscapes
    Tardigrain: it’s an Erik Sight synth. Like FRMS it is more suited towards playing and musicality imho.
    Quanta 2: adds two VA oscillators to the granular one. Many excellent artist presets
    iPulsaret: probably the deepest as far as the sound engineer goes. LFOs on everything!
    Outgrowth: the newest one, has several other sampler engines besides the granular one.

    I’m probably forgetting something.

  • WaveCloud by 4pockets gets pretty deep

  • Spacecraft as well.

    Unfortunately, they all have their little niches within the granular world and I’m not sure there’s one to rule them all. Unfortunately that also means you do get lots of overlapping functionality as well.

    WaveCloud covers an huge amount of functionality though, often goes on sale and is definitely worth considering.

  • Also consider skipping the synth part entirely and just going for a granular FX

  • There are traditional wave file loading granular synths with granular controls, keyboard based granular synths, and strictly granular effects.
    For more traditional wave file loading synths Spacelab by Mark Watts, Tardigrain by Erik Syth and Borderlands by Chris Carlson are my go to choices.
    My personal keyboard based is currently Quanta by Audio Damage. I have 4Pockets WaveClouds but haven’t had time to dive in.
    There are also a number of synth and effects based granular synthesis modules in miRack including some with the same code used in Mutable Instruments.
    My first love is Rasumus Ekman’s 1998 Granulab (Granny) for Windows. I wish there was an AUv3 Granulab 8 with the original same slider based interface. Quite the beast!

  • Thanks guys for recomendations, I think i will look more into Granular FX apps.
    @Gavinski
    Would you recomend something apart GRFX?
    @philowerx
    What modules in miRack are Granular fx with or without Mutable Instruments dna? Which one could you point me out?

    Silo is fun.

  • I find AnalolgyGR really useful for adding granular textures to stuff. The great random function and simple controls have meant I've used it to actually make music probably ten times more than I've used Fluss or FFRMS etc even tho they are so much more sophisticated... Your music is probably very different to mine but I'd take recommend taking a look! It's super cheap as well...

    Also, as Gavinski suggested, granular FX may get you where you want to go faster and easier. It's all very personal tho. I've bonded with GRFX (cheap!) and the Quantum Granulator loads more than Silo for instance.

  • I have a bunch of granular stuff. For synths I use FRMS the most, the FM synthesis really goes great with the granular engine. For FX I am a big fan of GRFX and Silo. They’re quite different but super flexible and useful.

    I also like iDensity, and the wave scanner in Drambo is similar.
