Ambient Piece in Honor of a Friend Who Recently Passed
I lived next door to my neighbor and friend, Colin. On my way out to my gig, I saw four firefighters surrounding his apartment. I didn't know what the hell happened, asked them if everything's okay, and was told "don't worry about it".
About an hour later, when I was at the venue, my neighbor and friend Justin called and told me that Colin passed away. An hour after that, my neighbor and friend Susan sent an email blast with this news to other neighbors in my apartment building.
I performed piano well enough, but had to deal with the pain of losing a good friend throughout my shift. I cried once I returned home, and then I created the above piece in Colin's honor. Not a Jamuary entry. Not appeasing Soundcloud's algorithm by keeping the piece under 10 minutes long. Colin deserves better than some short rubbish piece of music in his honor.

I know you have me blocked but sorry about your friend. Very nice piece. That's quite a journey. Melody kind of reminds me of the intro to the Star Trek Original Series theme.

Colin was a kind and gentle soul. Softspoken, mostly kept to himself. During the summer, he would usually sit out on the apartment building's patio with a drink and a cigarette. I would often join him in conversation about things such as our local sports teams, our jobs, music we like, etc. I remember once he asked "You don't mind if I light up another one?" I replied, "Only if you don't mind me vaping a little," which made him chuckle.
I usually shared my music with Colin, and he mostly enjoyed it (except for that one Noise music experiment from a couple years ago, but hey. Noise music isn't for everyone). Since Colin was fond of my Ambient works from Jamuary 2025, I felt it fitting to make a piece of Ambient that he'd like. If only he were still around to hear it.
Colin didn't always live next to me. He originally had an apartment on a different floor in the building, but was priced out when management renovated his old apartment to include a kitchenette, which effectively raised his rent. I've known him since I first moved here.
I could barely sleep last night. He'd usually have his television on low and sleep with it on. Usually some religious Christian channel. Point being, it ain't normal that the apartment next to mine is empty and quiet now. The whole building is in mourning. This is how well-known Colin was. I know life goes on, but he'll be missed.

Thank you for your understanding and kindness @michael_m and @Blipsford_Baubie . Music is probably the only way I know how to process grief. Well, that, and journaling my thoughts - something I only recently learned to do about four years ago. And goodness me, did I write a lot yesterday.
My sleep was rather shit last night. Just knowing the apartment next to me is empty kind of freaks me out. And each time I pass my now former friend's door, it fills me with grief. I'm making sure to practice self care, to make sure I do my daily routine, and all that.
