  • @Fruitbat1919 I don't know about Logic because I use a PC for desktop work, but I can say it's brilliant with Ableton.

Thanks Doug. Found it from a store for £154 now. So tempted!

  • I have Reason 12 and use it in the rack with Logic. When I remember I have it!

Works great. You can build racks with loads of different modules and it's a true powerhouse. I find the best ways to use it are to save channel strips with it all set up ready to go with particular synths ready loaded or in a big template to add to your project via the import function. This takes away a bit of friction as otherwise you have to set up the rack each time you load it.

it can work as an instrument or fx -- so there's a ton of stuff. It's just one additional layer than a simple plug-ins, hence saving presets in Logic to speed things up...

Thanks for all the info :)

  • I have used the rack in Ableton but not in any thing else. I currently use 13 most of time in stand alone any only use native devices and a few REs. It’s brilliant and fun to use. Highly recommended.

Reason is so fun to work in and when I need a break from Ableton/Logic it’s where I head to. I hope you like it and if you have any questions about it feel free to ask. I’ve been using it for like twenty years now.

Thanks. So far it seems pretty easy to get my head around. Some of the extras you can buy look like future purchases too! I probably will have some questions at some point though, so will take you up on your kind offer :)

How are you getting on with it?

I've finally (4 months after the sale has ended) found my old license (v10) details.

Seems I can upgrade for £99, but wondering what the sale upgrade price was, and whether it's worth buying/waiting for the next sale? £99 seems a decent discount on the full £299 price, though it'd be good to get it cheaper if possible.

£99 is around the same or in the ball park - I cant remember the exact price as I was buying a lot of software in sales around that time. Sorry just looked back, it was £199, so £99 is a bargain!

I have however, spent quite a bit more on Reason since. Adding other rack goodies has become my new guilty pleasure! Getting the main program cheap is like a drug pushers 'first one is free' lol. Yes, you could rent the whole package instead, but I personally hate subsriptions, so am just buying the extras goodies as I want them over time.

Reason is probably the most ancient feeling of my 4 used DAWs, but boy is it FUN!

I dont imagine I will make most my songs in Reason, there are so many things that are easier to do in Logic, Fender Studio or Ableton Live. I do however start lots of ideas for tracks in Reason, as it just makes you think in such a different way to most other DAWs. I also just love the rack - it brings out the mechano, lego, hardware studio racks building kid in me!

I literally had Reason on making a new start to a track this morning before id even had my shower, its just that fun. I would however avoid it if you make music for a living, as its just slow and clunky in some ways. Feels like a relic from the past that while not as good as some modern ways, yet makes you feel a cosy warmth and connection with just making music for the hell of it!

Just to add. Since the aquisition by Landr or whomever, the prices have changed. The full Reason was around £400+ non discount and £199 in sales, now its £299 full price and £99 upgrade, a new rack only version or Reason+ Subscription. Will see what sales they do in the future.

I have noticed that whenever I start a new project that it asks if I want to look for new rack devices etc - hope the ads is not too much of a sign of the future direction!

  • I must say the price is an amazing deal for what you get. Some of Reason's softsynths and effects are excellent.

Agree. When you consider some standalone synth vsts can be around £200. You get an awful lot for £300.

Fender Studio is a great deal as well for under £200!

Thanks for the feedback, it’s been a few years since I used it (v10 no longer compatible), but enjoyed it when it was.

Yes, interesting price change - doing a google search it seems sale prices for the upgrade were around $79 - 99, so not much difference to the new deals. I guess there’s still room for more sales, but £99 is a decent price.

    Time to watch some demos!

  • I'm mostly interested in Objekt, which only comes as a part of the Reason+ subscription. Although you can buy it separately.

I'm going to give the 1-month trial a go. it's only €1 for the first month.

Well worth it, and will still cost you less than modular lol

    Blimey - £69... https://www.andertons.co.uk/upgrade-to-reason-13--esd/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=surfaces

    seems like destiny lol

At this rate they'll be paying me!

Earlier I was a very taken with Objekt, and thought I'd end up wanting that as well, but then I checked out available options in Live and depsite a less friendly UI, Collision and Tension has all that stuff covered already.

I'd also parked the Reason upgrade, as £99 is still a hefty amount of cash. But £69....for all that content is pretty damn tempting. That's a handful of apps prices.

    Hmmm....more demo watching ahead!

Bit frustrating looking through the devices list (https://www.reasonstudios.com/devices), each time I see something interesting and click to see if it's included (you have to check, there's no version filter) I find it isn't!

There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of difference between the old version I have from 8 years ago, and the new one unless you go for the sub. So basically £69 to have a version that works. Fair enough though I guess.

I’m thinking the unthinkable, and chewing over the sub, otherwise I'll be forever eyeing up the stuff that's not included. Argh, bloody subscriptions!

Yep the list is annoying. I jotted down all that I wanted then waited for the sale. They seem to cycle through what is on sale, changing it now and again, with a big sale just gone. To be fair, I have probably 70 percent of what I want now after just a couple of sales.

Maybe worth keeping an eye incase the pricing of the individual items change now that the new company owns them? And keep in mind the overlap with software you already have. Once you hit a good sale, youll probably buy a few instruments and the players and call it a day. While ive tried a few non Reason Studio items like some Rob Papan synths, its the Reason Studios gear that works best in the rack format

Yeah, there’s not much in the base Studio that I can’t already replicate via Live Suite and Komplete, but some of the Reason + kit such as Objekt and Friktion would be really nice to have. They’re pricey though (most seem to be around £100) so it’d have to be a sale purchase.

Haven’t ruled out the £69 base purchase as I enjoy Reason’s old style UI - a bit of fresh air compared to the tiny utilitarian strip in Live, but like you say it’s juggling available funds vs overlap! I’m also interested in Pigments and Absynth 6, so any Reason purchase would take funds from a potential purchase of those.

Thanks for all your feedback, still on the cards - need to make my mind up before that deal ends!

Love Pigments. One of my most used VSTs at the moment. Got it at half price in the last sale.

Good to see there are some Propellerheads in the midst. I've used Reason since version 5 but long before that had a lot of fun with ReBirth. Now I have Reason+ subscription which is the best in my opinion as all is included. I always wait for 50% off and usually it doesn't take that long. Now I've timed end of sub with Black Friday, so that's pretty good. I never used the rack in another daw but that might change now after the 28th, we'll see.
Also a bit curious what the Landr merger will give. Anyway, I really love Reason.

Edit: Have you guys checked out Ultra ? Benn Jordan had a demo that made me buy it (rent to own) but haven't had the time yet to go deeper. I can't find the Jordan video (it was live christmas) strange enough, sorry about that.

Ive used the rack in Logic, Fender Studio and Ableton a few times. Mostly been really succesful. Had a few stuck notes on one track lately with a new Cherry Audio VST I got, but could just be one of those things as for the most part its been plain sailing. I ve never had any issues in Reason that were not user error, not yet anyway.

The only thing I would like with Reason that I have with Fender Studio and Ableton, is a controller that is specifically made for use with it. Same for Logic to be honest. Reason has an abundence of controllers and even Fender Studio has a few Presonus and now Fender controllers that really make using the program better.

Im quite hopeful in one way with Landr lowering the price of entry for the main program and releasing the rack seperately, as it will hopefully will gain some more popularity for Reason again. On the other hand, not sure if the actual DAW side will get that much benefits if the rack becomes the most popular element....only time will tell.

Ultra? not heard of that yet....is it a synth? Maybe a Depeche Mode synth perhaps lol

Still seems to be on sale ($99) direct, or £84 from some third-parties…
