Getting back into BeatMaker 3–still one of the best
I haven’t used it for years, but the recent update prompted me to try it again. Why did I ever stop using it!?! The sampler is still the best I’ve used in software, the midi sync is tight af, and its just so quick to use once you get used to its ui conventions.
I’m seriously thinking about getting an older iPad just for bm3 and some audio units, taking it offline and freezing it for use as a bm3 machine.
Anyone else still using it?

Considering how little maintenance has been put into the app the past several, it's holding up pretty darn well if you ask me. However, I'm refusing to use any apps that don't have AI from here on out. Any app that expects me to be able to create music using my own skill is obviously obsolete.
Yeah, for me it seems more solid now than when I used to use it. And I’m also a lot more experienced so I can understand just how flexible and fast it is to use.

That's funny, I saw this post because today I was using it as well. I have tried Logic Pro, but for some reason, I still come back to BM3.
It is a very good DAW, and the sampler is still ahead of the pack. My only gripe is a significant one - it always sounds a bit thinner when exported, compared to the music I create in AUM or Drambo.
I am unanimous in that.
If the writer is new to you and you miss the intention you will probably mutter out loud. "You have got to be kidding me." But not believe your own statement but only as a turn of phrase... Then mutter "what an idiot".
Oh well... We do not suffer fools here. We just have some false positives now and then like that idiot that passed me in the slow lane just because I won't go more than 15 over the speed limit on the freeways in CA. The fine is big enough to care until you approach 20 over so everyone around me is going 80 in the 65MPH situation.
AI will make cars smart enough to rat on us for violations of the law but it will also avoid most common collision scenarios like lane changes into cars in the blind spot.
A big no-no for me and my broken neck.
It is good to see BM3 get an update… I wish NS2 would show signs of life. Maybe sell the code to a dev house like @michael did with AudioBus.

Good point. It’s not like I use NanoStudio 2 but I was hoping to see it continue to be enhanced. I think @michael’s payment plan would have been helpful (potentially) for NS2.
As I’m digging deeper into BM3 this time around, it’s got me questioning the need for the hardware I have here.
Something about BM3 feels very hardware-like. Maybe it’s the speed of the UI, or the lack of menus, or just that it’s so well thought out. It’s gotten me excited about AUs again too.
Yesterday I was improvising something on the pads, and hit record on the off chance that it might capture something useful at least. It actually grabbed a loop as a session clip, which surprised me as I hadn’t prepped any empty clips. 👍
It is massively inspired (some would say "inspired") by Maschine. I used BM3 steady for about three years. Then when workfromhomedemic kicked in I got Maschine MK3 and was very very happy I did. It felt like a direct workflow extension of the BM3 experience with an injection of a gargantuan sound library, lovely tactile knobs and pads and the options to divide aspects between either hardware or mouse/keyboard, running standalone or as a vst etc. It really is like a glove that can fit everyone differently. Anyway, had I still been commuting everyday I would probably have kept using BM3 the whole while and been just fine too. It really is great at what it does.
@AudioGus I’m seriously thinking about getting the Maschine now, but it’s pretty old at this point. OTOH that probably means I can get one used for very little.

Just a heads up if you’re buying one second hand. Make sure the seller transfers the licence over to you otherwise it can be quite a hassle to download the software for it.

Yah there could be a new version of the hardware at some point but I could probably be on MK3 for a decade more happy as a clam without fomo. Unless MK4 has something crazy like MPE on pads, but eh, I don't think so at that price point. To me it is just seasoned rather than old and I am glad to have gotten in on it late when I did as opposed to earlier when it was still having growing pains. The nice thing with the hardware being tethered to a computer is that upgrading my computer after 5+ years felt like a Maschine upgrade too.
I've been with Maschine and Ableton since they both came into existence! Having spent an enormous amount of time with Push 3 and Push 2 before that, I always keep coming back to my MK3(sold and repurchased 3 times) as I simply get stuff done and thrive within it's limitations! I much prefer pairing it with my M5 iPad Pro to use all those wonderful unique iOS MIDI apps instead of using Max4live devices in Ableton! I am considering repurchasing a Jam for the 3rd time as well, as I really miss it!
I produce mostly ambient/soundscape/abstract experimental stuff which is usually not associated with Maschine music production!
A fellow Ambient producer! Nice! How do you find your hardware works for such purposes?
There are so many avenues for which you can get going on an ambient project in Maschine. Doug from TSTR even did a video a few years back on one such method that is well worth a watch!
For me, I tend to start with a long sample that has a lot a different things going on in it. Maybe a symphonic piece by Stravinski or Penderecki for example. I will duplicate it across many pads then focus in on one particular aspect of the sample on each pad. Maybe reverse it, tune it differently or completely distort with effects. Maybe I will feed MIDI from my iPad like Rozeta particles or collider into one of the pads.
Getting back to the original point of this discussion: Beatmaker! It is the closest thing to Maschine on the iPad in my opinion! I could do the exact same method of ambient composition by duplicating a sample across the pads, using the amazing (second to none!) sample editor in BM3 and using all the amazing midi and audio effects per pad. Why has this been sitting on my iPad unused for years??!! And the best part....no subscription fee!!

I'll have to watch some "getting started with Beatmaker 3" tutorials then I take it.
I've had Beatmaker 3 since it first launched but never really got into it since it was unstable and crashed a lot back in either 2016 or 2017 when it was first launched. I'm sure all that's been ironed out by now, and I'm always looking for new ways to create music, including Ambient music.
Do you use Koala Sampler? If so, what would you say are the key differences in your process?
I do use Koala occasionally but I am by no means an expert, nor am I an expert in BM3. In Koala, this method of composition would most likely only work in a host like AUM where you have access to more sophisticated routing and applying MIDI effects and a broader range of audio effects.
The most recent Koala update should be exciting for ambient producers with chopping per pad! Building complex textures by chopping and mangling long samples per pad as opposed to spread across multiple pads is a significant addition!
I must admit though, having spent only a few minutes revisiting BM3 last night has me very intrigued ! Echoopera posted a video about chopping a sample and applying effects in Logic today. So I immediately went to BM3 and quickly, and intuitively replicated the same thing. It might not look as pretty as Logic, but there are more options in BM3 through the sample editor as well as access to all your MIDI effects and both AU and IAA audio effects per pad like Logic ! And, once again.........no subscription fee!!!
