Looking at compact drum pads
What would you peeps recommend in the compact hardware drum area. I just dont have room for a drum kit, so Im after a midi controller that I can hit with proper sticks to try to add a little more human feel to certain parts of my drum tracks.
I used to have a singel synth drum back in the Eighties and it was so much fun. A midi controller pad seems more s3nsible now as I make most of my music on my Macs and have plenty of drum samplers and synth apps and VSTs.
Im not opposed to recording in audio though, so if those multi pad d3vices with built in sounds is what you would recommend, then fine.
I have just started reserching options online, but as always and directional hints or suggestions from what you use is welcome ![]()

I saw that Jack Skuse used this kind of pads in his YT performances. He is also active on Loopy Pro FB channel.
does it show what pads he is using, as the youtube video on the link doesnt seem to show the pads, unless I missed that bit lol
Oh, it was just a link to his YT channel. He uses Nord Drum 3P

Thamks
Ludwig just released a new drum pad https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TPMultipad--ludwig-total-percussion-multipad
Looks interesting, and more affordable than a Nord anything.
I use finger pads, fwiw. Not quite the same as hitting with sticks, but with practice can be pretty convincing.
I’m a drummer
I wish I had a nord drum
I have a boppad and an Alesis Strike multipad. I like them both for their sensitivity and ease of use. I find both to work reliably with iOS devices via standard usb hubs.
If you need a kick pedal I’d recommend a Roland KT10
Thanks will take a look at some vids
Thanks will have a l99k at these too
When you say you don’t have enough room for a drum kit, are you assuming the footprint of a typical acoustic kit, or just that you don’t have floor space at all?
I'm keeping my old Roland Pad-80 Octapad for the exact same reason.
I prefer it over the never models that I've tried because its pad response is very sensitive to light touches and sensitivity is the same no matter where you hit the pad.
They're only available second hand and chances are that you might need to replace the piezos inside to restore perfect response but IMO it's worth it.
Mesh pads feel better, no doubt but they're much larger.
No floor space. My studio is also our tv room. My wife is very understanding, but even a small digital kit would be too much, so pads or nothing lol
Thanks for the suggestion
I have a Nord Drum 3p and a Roland KT-9 kick pedal. The Nord sounds absolutely beautiful but it's a synth not samples. That's what I love about it, though, because the sound is very dynamic. It feels great to play because of that, but the pads are hard rubber and so are audible in the room when you strike them. I use it on everything we record but I can also trigger Addictive Drums with it for acoustic drum sounds.
The Nord 3p only accepts one trigger input so you can't have a kick pedal with a hihat pedal. You can use velocity to open the hihat and it works fine but it's not the same.
The Roland KT-9 is a miss. It's supposedly silent, but it's not, and it feels laggy. I would suggest the Roland KT-10 if you need a kick pedal and aren't super worried about the volume in the room.
Not too worried about the kick. Think I will keep that TR'd
I used to own a Roland Octapad. You can hook up a kick trigger controller to it and it takes up almost no space. Good if you intend on drumming in an apartment or somewhere you cannot be loud.

Yep the Roland looks a nice bit of kit. Going to look into it some more, Thanks

If you want a "MinI Drum Kit" check this out ... from Lekato...wild
https://lekatodeal.com/products/lekato-electronic-drum-set-w-quiet-mesh-snare-drum-pads-220-sounds
Or this from Donner
https://us.donnermusic.com/products/donner-beat-go-electronic-drumset
Those look very cheaply made. If one has no expectations of product longevity those might be OK. But then a pair of drumsticks and a plastic bucket can get one the same results.
I’m going to try the Donner kit because I found one used on Amazon for $135. Check it out… cheap gear gets lots of returns.
I’ll comment after it arrives and I can test drive with connection to the iPad.
@wagdog and @Fruitbat1919 : ICKSNAY on that Ludwig. It’s a Chinese product that sells for half that price( $350) or so and Ludwig doubled it by plastering their name on it . Google “Ludwig Total Percussion Pad” and you’ll see it on Redditt
Too weird looking for me lol
Hey a plastid bucket and a mic may be the answer lol
Yeah let us know !
Thanks
I followed your advice and looked into Reddit. I learned it’s the same as the Avatar PD705… I then looked into Amazon and it has one but there’s a uplevel model called the PD708. They had a PD708 used available for $292 and I just happen to have almost that amount in credit card bonus bucks. That made checking it out a no brainer… Amazon is very good with refunds if the used product ruins my fizzy party.
The new PD708 is $389… the down level model PD705 is $289.
Good info Thanks still edging toward the Roland though, even though its expensive lol
I don’t think that’s a bad idea… I’m limiting my purchases on two critical vectors:
Cost
Space required to use the product (I prefer being able to make music from my recliner)
Sound or vibration
My dream set up would be one of the high-end Roland E-Drum Kits but space, cost and vibration make that impractical.
I just sold Roland SPDS because it dropped out of my set because McMillen’s BopPad is more compact, usb powered and sends midi pressure radius and velocity information.
Highly recommended.
Save me the required research: How many MIDI Notes can you play with a BobPad? My MidiKat can generate 6 with 2 pedals attached.
Do you drum with sticks or treat it as a hand drum surface? I want sticks because I have some rudimentary chops and my hands are damaged from carpal tunnel effects of computer/internet addictions.
