Making multiple backups (solution found thanks)
I religiously back up my music files to an external SSD
I had a nightmare this week though where I had all my gear stolen (just a bad dream thank God). It did however make me think that if my gear was stolen in all likelyhood they would take my SSD also, so I would lose everything ive done! What a horrible nightmare!
So, my solution is to back up to two drives. The one I use with my Mac and a spare one that I can disconnect and take with me in a safety case in my pocket whenever I leave the house.
So to my question:
Is there a simple way to back up to two drives simultaneously or do I have to stick with backing them up individually?
I dont want to back up onto the web, as I would need to have a subscription for that anmount of online storage.

Good question which has never actually occurred to me as a possibility. Unfortunately, I don’t know the answer - I back up to two external drives individually. Hopefully someone will know.
Yeah. If not I suppose as long as I keep my daily backup files low in size its not too much of a chore and worth the effort just in case
On a mac you can connect 2 hard disks and let Time Machine do the work, but i never tried this.
For multiple backups i use a Sinology Nas with a single disk and 2 usb drives connected to the nas. The main backup goes to the nas drive, the other two are made with the Synology backup utility (it's automated).
This sounds like he sort of tuing im after. Thanks. I will go take a look and probably have a herat attack at the price lol
When i leave my house (for more then one day) i put one of the usb drives in my pocket, so i'm sure that a copy of all my data is always with me.
yes thats my aim. back up left at home and one in pocket in case
If the Shortcuts app isn't too technical for your liking, you can easily set up a shortcut to back up to both drives with one tap on a Home Screen shortcut. You can even set shortcuts up to run on a repeating schedule (though that often needs manual intervention after OS updates as the permissions need to be re-confirmed).
If you're really geeky, A-Shell can run the venerable RSync utility that can get very sophisticated about keeping various sources in sync, and do it on a repeating schedule as well.
I have found backups with Shortcuts a little hit-and-miss. A few times they have failed silently when copying folders with many or larger files, and I need to remember to mount my NAS first. Have you found an automated way to make sure the NAS gets mounted before the file copying starts?
I only backup to iCloud, not to a mounted drive. It's been completely reliable except after updating the OS, at which time I usually have to manually reconfirm the permissions.
I have a quite complicated Shortcut that does a full backup once per week, and differential backups other days. One reason I haven't had problems with incomplete copies may be that I make a zip archive of the backed up files before copying to the backup folder.
I don't recommend my Shortcuts method to others, but it has worked well for me after some setup headaches.
That said ... I don't think I trust any form of copying files to a NAS or network share from the files app. I've read too many accounts of lost files.
You've motivated me to try R-Sync though just to see if A-Shell works well for this. I've relied on its algorithms and error checking for decades for syncing and archiving even across the internet.
@wim all sounds a bit complecated for me lol
Yeah. A bit masochistic on my part.
My whole career was built on making computers do shit they don’t want to do. Old habits die hard.
Thanks for everyones hel0 and input.
To be honest it all sounds either complex or expensive and weighted against what I will be losing in time when I have to back up a few files each day to two drives - think I will stick with things just taking a little longer. After all, Im probably only resaving 3 to 4 track files most days.
Again, thanks to everyone who commented
