Day by Day (Intimate Violin, Solo, Noire, Omnisphere)

This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Intimate Violin for the violin, Solo for the bassoon, Noire for the piano; and Omnisphere for the background instruments.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

It's titled Day by Day.

  • Hey David, how's it going? I hope all is well. What can I say? Beautiful as expected. You really have your sound and style nailed. Curious. Have you ever tried Chris Hein Solo Violin? I think you might like it. It's very expressive.

  • Thanks, @wagtunes. Much appreciated.

No, I haven't tried Chris Hein's Solo Violin. The demos sound very good. Given its high price, it's a shame there isn't any provision (that I could find) for a free trial version.

  • Mighty peaceful. Another healing track. I just love the noire piano sound. Wish it was available on ipad. Well done as always.

  • Another lovely track David although I thought the Violin could have done with a little reverb… just my view though 🤔

  • Thanks, @Dav and @GeoTony. Much appreciated.

@Dav, I've tried different piano sounds, but Noire seems to work best for a deep-down resonance. I hope it comes to the iPad, as well.

@GeoTony, thanks for the feedback. I've been working on a similar piece using the Intimate Cello plugin. Based on your comment here, I added a little reverb to it. And it does sound better. I used the House Piano Ambience preset in the Crystalline reverb, which is also available for iOS/iPadOS.

  • Beautiful track. This used to be called “new age” and it’s where I began my own synthesized musical journey a long time ago. You have inspired me to return to these roots. The world needs more peace a healing. I agree with @GeoTony about the violin needing something but I’m not sure it’s more reverb. And @wagtunes suggested trying another violin sound. As a wind player, here’s my 2 cents on it … expressiveness in a context like this is all about the sound constantly changing over time. Think envelope. An immediate improvement would be to program in a very long attack followed by a long decay and release. Give it a shot; I think you will notice the difference. You don’t need to edit the midi track at all, just the patch. This is advice I would give to many keyboard players’ tracks I hear.

  • Improvised! That’s impressive. Very nice tune.

I am curious, do you have Lurssen on the iPad too. Does it compare? I was thinking of buying it.

  • Thanks, @boomer and @ecou . Much appreciated.

@boomer, the Intimate Violin patch that I used here does let you adjust the attack and release parameters. I experimented with both parameters, and I was able to come up with a few better-sounding variations of the original patch. Thanks for the suggestion.

@ecou, yes, I bought the iPad version before I bought the Windows version. The two versions are essentially the same. I mostly use the FabFilter plugins on both platforms, but the Lurssen plugin can be a useful, though limited, alternative.

  • David, another beautiful, peaceful piece. The world needs more of this sort of thing.

  • Thanks, @ecamburn. Much appreciated.
