I'm thinking about getting a 1TB 13" iPad Air with the M3 chip...

edited January 30 in Hardware
  1. I need a new sheet music reader since my 2017 12.9" iPad Pro is showing signs of wear and tear.

  2. My eyesight ain't what it used to be.

  3. I need the extra storage to produce music comfortably. My Mini 7 is filling up fast.

  4. And a bonus feature - better ability to make digital art in ProCreate.

I usually produce music while at home anyways, so why the hell not? 😂 I don't need face ID or all those fancy Apple Intelligence features. Just a new daily driver with a better processor to handle the most demanding of tasks without it overheating like a bloody stove.

Thoughts?

  • I have the Air M2 13" and am very pleased. I like the extra screen. My GF has an 11", and I find it smallish. Sometimes I wonder if I'd prefer the iPad mini but it would be mostly for fieldrecording and Koala. I find the 13"/11" just a bit too big for walking around outside my house.

I also got this case for my iPad, and would probably like it a lot less without the case. It can do pretty much every angle, so I don't have to sit in a particular position to have both hands free. Couch, chair, La-Z-Boy, etc.

  • That's a great case suggestion! I think that's the case I'll get, then. :) Merci beaucoup, mon frere.

  • @oscillotus do you so happen to have the Amazon link you can post here, mate?

  • Fait plaisir mon ami. Glad I could help.

Here is the link to the US Amazon : https://a.co/d/0AsHFR3

Here is the link for the one I bought on the canadian Amazon so you can compare to be sure it's the same : https://a.co/d/9lJI1QA

Amazing! Thank you so much mate. :) Are you per chance from Quebec?

  • Yeah, I'm living in Québec right now. Little town between Montréal and Québec City.

  • I find I have to have the brightness down below halfway on my 13” Air M2, otherwise the battery drains really…..really fast, unless you keep it powered up then it doesn’t matter.

I had a gut feeling you did for whatever reason! Weird, man. :) Yeah, my girlfriend lives in Quebec. I think around where the Homers Donuts is.

Dude! That's so cool man. :)

I don't usually do bright screens, especially when sheet music reading. Otherwise the brightness will wear out my eyes, lol.

Must've been the accent man :P Yeah, that's cool! What a coincidence! If you go to Québec eventually, I can point you to a few cool places. The underground and alternative scene is pretty alive. Just let me know 😎

M2 minimum. 10/11 inch minimum. Get as much memory as you can afford. USBC and nothing else.

    PS
Get a ROBUST case and a USB POWERED hub.

It’s a great iPad. All of the new ones are (in terms of power/speed). I haven’t upgraded because of the headphone jack thing, but I’ve used the new ones. They’re nice.

Thanks mate. :) Went with the 13-inch one with 1TB, not to worry. Not gonna do another 512gb device, and I need to read sheet music on it. :)

If you have a case suggestion from Amazon mate, let me know. I also plan to get a matte screen protector.

Sweet. :) Yeah, the headphone jack thing isn't a factor for me, but then again that's for me personally. I don't usually produce music live, but when I do something live, it's Ambient. 😅 So Bluetooth latency is a non-issue there.

  • So I went with this brown leather case. I'll be carrying my 13" Air in a super padded bag like I do my 2017 Pro, and using it on a music stand. So I figured that'd be the best way to go.

I also ordered my screen protector for the Air 13". It's a Mothca matte screen protector, the same I use on my 16 Pro Max. It reduces glare and reflections superbly.

  • Do you typically get the Apple Pencil, keyboard, or camera adapter? I find those to be pretty critical in my iPad workflow.

I have a Pencil Pro already as well as a Pebble keyboard which can swap between devices at the push of a button. :) I doubt I need a camera adapter as I don't usually hook up devices to the device.

So it finally arrived! I'm waiting to unbox it on videochat with my girlfriend. She loves unboxing videos on Youtube, so this will be a fun thing I do with her. ❤️ Then I'll set it up afterwards.

Edit: And she got a couple of fashion items in the mail today! Guess she and I will be doing mutual unboxings. I know that sounds corny, but it's fun. :)

It's not corny at all! After 40 years of living together, my wife still watches with amusement as I get excited when I get a new device, lol ❤️

    It's fun!

Agreed. The videochat was a lot of fun for both her and I, until my iPad Air turned itself on while trying to stuff it into its protective case. 😂 Then I became distracted for 10 minutes trying to set it up and have a fresh start with it (it tried to install a backup from iCloud, and I'm like, "oh shit, that's not what I wanted!"). 🤣 But once I got to the home screen, I'm like, "Yep, that's enough setting this iPad up for now." She laughed her butt off.

Of course today is the grunt work. I have Piascore installed, but need to import the sheet music PDFs (the easy part) and sort them out and tag them (the difficult part).

  • Have fun with your new iPad jwmmakerofmusic

  • Congratz with your new iPad, Jim. This will level up your creations even more

Thanks mates. :) So far, I have Piascore installed and imported all my sheet music pdfs. I have to do the grunt work of sorting all of them out and tagging them appropriately so I can find them in a quick search while at a gig. That's going to be a chore, lol.

I also installed Korg Gadget and its internal IAPs as well as the Korg ecosystem of apps compatible with Gadget, including activating all their IAPs. I also installed Cubasis and downloaded all those sounds to my iPad as well as Bark Filter, Youlean's Loudness Meter, and Baby Audio's Taip. (I'll download more plugins later. I only installed the basics for now.)

While I'm working on sorting my sheet music PDFs, I'm zipping up my sample libraries on my iPhone to airdrop over to my new iPad. Although I'm doing the sample libraries right now while taking a break from sorting the PDFs. It'll be worth it in the end though. I'll have my new sheet music reader and about 100gb of audio samples with Korg Gadget. The barebones basics.

  • Although, I do seem to be having a bitch of a time with app icons on the home screen.

Basically, I sorted most of my apps into folders and the task bar. However, the icons of the apps in the folders still appear on the home page. I have no idea what the hell this is. I'm running iPadOS 26.2 on here.

Who even gets to decide what's corny and what's not. If being corny means having fun with ones girlfriend, then I prefer to be the corniest of cornies than some dull macho.

Have fun with your new device, I hop you enjoy it ;)

Thanks mate. ;) And yeah, I prefer to be corny and sappy too than some toxic macho guy bossing his girlfriend/wife around. She and I are a team, after all. :)

Okay, so I restarted my iPad Air, and the icon situation has cleared up. That was weird.
