Crackling audio since iOS 26 upgrade
I dunno if anyone else is having small issues but all my apps that ran rock solid on (128 buffer) iOS 18 run really rocky on iOS 26. At least for the first 10 seconds of launching an app the audio buffer struggles and then usually gets smooth but what gives. The dsp/cpu usage meter is @ 10% the whole time but still get stutters? Same simple projects that ran perfect on iOS 18
Mostly seems to be an app startup issue but I wondered if anyone else made the jump and noticed this?
Also just makes my phone feel old and sluggish in general. It’s a brand new iPhone 16 plus that ran like a dream before I upgraded. I am not a fan

Hi. How long has it been since you updated to iOS 26? It can take a little while for initial processing to complete after updating.
It’s been several days. Don’t think it’s an indexing problem. Maybe iOS 26 just has weird throttling issues. Low power, background app refresh and ai are all off
I don't believe there are weird throttling issues. Have you tried restarting the phone, checking for background apps, maybe look at app battery usage, etc.? Is Siri completely off? Do your app settings show normal buffer sizes? Siri had a way of messing with them, creating odd values.
Yea Siri is off and no background apps or background refresh. Focus mode and airplane mode don’t help either. It’s only that way on app start for about half a minute but it’s odd that it wasn’t happening on iOS 18
Even weirder I noticed this doesn’t happen thru headphones so I guess that’s an easy fix but it’s odd
Good to know. Thanks.
Is there an interface that you are using? How are you connecting your headphones with your iPhone?
If not through headphones, then through what? The iPhone speakers, an audio interface, through Bluetooth?
In which host(s)?
When you aren’t using headphones, are you using the built-in speakers or your interface?
Liquid Glass is causing pro-audio glitches on mobile AND on the Mac. It's killing audio software and hardware devs with support requests.
shakes fist at Tim Apple
I wonder if reducing the Liquid Glass "delight" helps at all.
The issue happens thru the iPhone built in speakers only.
Doesn’t happen thru wired Apple earbuds (or audio interfaces). Liquid Glass motion and transparency are off I think this is just a speaker issue for some reason but only for iOS 26
I couldn’t find any sources or notes on it. Do you have any?
Makes sense. Maybe you got a bad iPhone 16. Or there is some sort of hardware incompatibility with iOS 26? Another possibility is what you are hearing is clipping? Is there a setting somewhere that is overloading the speakers?
I appreciate the feedback - makes me not want to upgrade my own iPhone 16 Plus. Thanks
No audio well below clipped range and cpu usage is barely 10% disappears after 10-15 sec of the app running. Happens in multiple apps. Doesn’t happen thru headphones/audio interfaces and doesn’t happen with anything recorded like audio files/videos. Just music apps that need the audio thread
Is measurement mode on? (or whatever it's called in the host you're using, which you didn't mention.)
The phone could be doing some kind of adjusting for background noise or echo cancellation or something, and that may be taking some time to settle in.
All the necessary settings are on/off (including measurement mode which is only available in Cubasis these days) but none of them affect anything at all unfortunately
No settings help the crackles or pops on that. I’m p sure it’s an iOS issue since it’s app wide but just on built in speakers everything else works fine (headphones/audio interface no issues). Really not a huge deal since I do any serious music thru an interface but it’s odd and I wondered if anyone else had this issue
Also I feel like all of those issues are negated by the fact audio interface or earbuds solve the problem. If it was a setting or bad install I don’t think it would matter what the audio output device was
