Clock sync with external gear > Sim'n Tonic Nome II the solution?
Hi folks,
I built a cool effects and drum rig with an iPad (M5), Loopy Pro and a Roland TR-4S to accompany my ELTA Solar 42N. The problem now is clock sync.
My idea is to synchronize all devices with the Nome II. Has anyone tried this successfully? Will this work via USB/iPad/Loopy?
Thanks for any tips
John

Well... i will try it anyway and report the outcome here
Have you tried searching around here for issues synching between iOS apps and hardware? Generally the software needs to be the MIDI clock master, although there are exceptions and work-arounds. What does the Nome offer beyond a simple USB hub linking the gear?
Loopy Pro follows MIDI clock just dandy. No problem there.
Other DAWs ... depends. AUM, no.
One potential problem is that when using iPad apps as clock generator most of them only start sending clock messages the moment the transport gets started. There are exceptions (ApeMatrix). This behavior can be problematic with hardware synths that require a short time to lock on to MIDI clock. In this case it is best to either start your rig with empty sequences, use some kind of "pre-roll" feature that starts the clock a beat or two before sending "start", or use another device as clock source.
Personally I have not invested in a dedicated clock generator but I often use a Volca Sample (your get them for much less than the Nome costs on eBay), that has been modded with a MIDI output for that purpose. It has the advantage that it gives me sync pulses as well, and I can even load a sampled click to use the audio output as two additional clock channels for my Volcas or the two Korg SQ-1s.
Well the Nome is a Master clock. It can send clock to Midi, CV and USB. But it can do much more just look it up.
HA it's working. Loopy Pro and the Nome II belong to each other
