MIDI connectivity problems

Good evening everyone

I wonder if someone could give a hint:

My iPad, with loopy running of course, is connected to an audio interface. Now I wanted an additional MIDI connection to a Mac. I tried via link. But in order to be able to send me messages to Ableton live in the Mac, I would need to enable network MIDI in Loopy pro system settings. It works for an instant, but it causes terrible problems, tempo goes up to 600 😱

Connecting the Mac via ethernet to the rj45 of the USB hub does not work, even if I put a MIDI RENKFORCE PW 105 between. And I cannot connect the iPad directly to the Mac, because the iPad USB-C is already connected to the interface .....

Is there anything that I can do about that, or are there maybe other solutions to this?

All advice will greatly be appreciated

This sounds like you have a midi feedback loop going.

What do you mean by ”I tried via cc link”? Link is strictly a synchronization protocol.

Check that you aren’t both sending and receiving clock.

Use a midi monitor to see what is going on.

    Thanks Edward for your support

Did I say CC link? What I meant was Ableton link.

    Trying Wi-Fi Ableton link again:

I open LOOPY settings/synchronization, then I have midi clock sources listed, virtual MIDI in, fire face port one CHECKED, fire face port two, and the connection to the Mac

Same list under MIDI clock destinations, and only the connection to the Mac is CHECKED.

Now the MIDI feedback loop is gone!

now when loopy he's playing a track, I can see on MIDI monitor on the Mac many incoming signals of the clock end of the test
A button in loopy tries to send CC0 to fire face port one, but nothing turns up on the Mac.

How could I narrow down the problem?

Ableton Link does not send MIDI notes or CC, only clock/timing/phase/bar/etc

  • @Zsolt : you need to set up a midi connection between your Mac and Loopy Pro. Ableton Link is not midi; it is just a sync protocol and can’t be used for sending midi messages.

You may be able to use Network MIDI between the devices but Bluetooth MIDI might be easier.

yes, that's right. Sorry to be unclear.
The setup described works for Ableton Link. But I am not able to send midi messages from the iPad (loopy) to the Mac although network session seems to be properly set up in midi studio on the Mac.

Have you enabled Network MIDI in Loopy Pro's System Settings?

Can you post screenshots of how you have it set up on the Mac and in Loopy Pro and how you are checking the MIDI communication?

As mentioned, you'll be much better off using Bluetooth MIDI to the Mac rather than Network Session. Network Session will work if set up properly, but over WiFi it won't generally work as well as Bluetooth MIDI.

Whatever you do, make sure there's only one sync method being used. (I would stick with Link rather than sending clock over Bluetooth.)

  • Thanks folks - meanwhile I figured it out myself. I am using network session indeed, but it did not work with an RJ-45 cable. It works now with a simple USB connection between Mac and the USB hub and wi-fi turned off
I will consider the Bluetooth option if I ran into any problems.

I think you mean iDAM over USB, not Network Session, right?
(Checking in case I've missed something about Network Session being able to work over USB, and because I'm curious if network session offers advantages over iDAM.)

btw, I'm able to get network session working between iPad and Mac over RJ-45 Ethernet cable. The connection failed when I also had WiFi enabled, which I assume was because of some kind of routing conflict.

Network session can run with a USB connection. I think it does an ad hoc Ethernet connection. It is very handy.

Yeah, thanks. I was just trying that out and found that you're correct.

For using link or midi, i think it is quicker to set up. I've used it primarily to sync my mac and ipad with Ableton link which might not even require network midi.
