JWM - The Videogame OST EP (Videogame styled music in Kirastudio on iPad!)

An EP of 6 short videogame OST-styled tracks, this EP was created in the recently-released Kirastudio and mastered in Cubasis 3. Here are the tracks...

0'00" - Cozy Afternoon in the Meadow
0'22" - Andean Flutes
1'42" - General Boss Theme
3'04" - Wedding Feast
4'37" - Get On Down
6'23" - Rock N Roll Battle

Some extra notes I didn't put on Soundcloud. I was searching for "that Nintendo OST" sound, but on iOS. The Roland Sound Canvas app is the most logical choice given Nintendo have used the SC-55 for many of their videogame OSTs from the mid-to-late 90s and onward. However, iOS' Sound Canvas is IAA only and would be (for me personally) a complete chore to set up just to get down some ideas using it within AUM and using Xequence 2 to drive it. Not impossible, but just a chore which, by the time I set it up, I'd lose any possible musical ideas floating in my noggin.

Kirastudio was released earlier this month, and holy shit man! It not only has chip emulations, it has the ability to use soundfonts. I have a collection of over 1000 soundfonts, but I never got around to using any of those given the soundfont which comes default in Kirastudio closest resembles the SC-55! It's that damn good.

So, "Cozy Afternoon in the Meadow" and "Wedding Feast" closest resemble themes you'd hear roaming a town in an RPG sort of game. No enemy battles to deal with, grinding for HP and in-game currency. "Get On Down" is a remake of a Bluegrass piece I made last year, but I felt it would fit great after "Wedding Feast" since it's a dance tune.

"Andean Flutes" is of course a nod to my love of Andean Flute Music and could double as a "wandering a mountain range" type track. And of course what videogame OST-styled EP would be complete without at least one boss battle song? So I added two - "Rock N Roll Battle" and "General Boss Theme". These ones are fast and furious.

And yes, I know the guitar definitely sounds super fake in "Rock N Roll Battle", but that's the point. This music is supposed to sound like classic MIDI-based videogame music, not some high-end production for a modern Triple A title like "Halo" or "Call of Duty".

I showed these tracks to a lot of my gamer friends, and they all remarked how similar these pieces sound to that "Nintendo OST" sound. Which makes me feel so happy. This is the type of sound I've been hunting down for the past 2-3 months!

I'd also say Kirastudio is mega! The fact it can be used on iPhone, iPad, Android, and Windows (free on Windows, paid otherwise, but at an affordable price for the paid ones), means one can transfer projects to anywhere. It doesn't have AUv3 support on iOS, but it doesn't need it given the aforementioned ability to use soundfonts.

Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this EP.

One more thing - today is the 40th anniversary of the "Legend of Zelda" franchise! What better day to release an EP like this than on the Zelda 40th anniversary!?

  • I’m not even a gamer but I can appreciate these. You definitely captured the mood you set out to represent.

I particularly like General Boss Theme - definitely has those “Oh shit! Here it comes!” vibes.

Yes! Man, I'm glad you dig these. I love this kind of music a lot, and it took a lot of research and patience to get "that Nintendo OST" sound. Especially since Kirastudio wasn't a thing until just a couple weeks ago.

  • I think in reality, I have one or two more pieces of music left in me before I take a sabbatical from music creation to focus on improving my drawing skills. Not sure if the sabbatical will last a couple days, couple weeks, or a couple months. 😅 Exciting though.

  • That was awesome Jim. You took to Kirastudio like a fish to water. It really sounds like a Nintendo soundtrack.

My favorite is the General Boss theme.

Yes! ❤️ I'm so happy. Kirastudio really is easy to get along with.

My favorite is the General Boss theme.

    My fave too. :)

  • Get On Down is soooo good haha! Picturing a banquet/feast with tons of merriment, spilled mead, and dancing. One of those “break from the action” scenes, but possibly something nefarious going on in the background… Great stuff 🤙

  • This one was fun to listen to!

The SoundFont used in KiraStudio is this.

The same SoundFont is also included with KQ Sampei...

  • @jwmmakerofmusic Hi Jim, this is really awesome! It inspired me to play some retro games on my Ayn Thor. The older Zelda games are good, but my favorite is Tears of the Kingdom.

Yes! Exactly the kind of scene I was envisioning in my head when I listened to the original. I was like, "This would sound great in such a scene." Glad you like it. :)

Glad you like my EP, mate. :) I definitely want to get into Tears of the Kingdom, but can't afford that and new (and new-to-me) music apps. Lol. Tulin looks like an adorable character, for instance, and I found out about him via the ACNH 3.0 update. (My favorite cozy game to relax to.)

I was wondering which Soundfont it was to be quite honest! :) It definitely sounds like the Roland Sound Canvas, which I'm thankful for. The exact sounds I wanted from a soundfont. I had no idea KQ Sampei uses the same default soundfont either. :) It appears I have the legacy version of KQ Sampei, and I'll probably go ahead and grab the 26 version instead.

  • Dude are you kidding me with Get On Down.

Forget what everyone said about how hard it is to break into the industry. You’re there. This is your portfolio.

Thanks mate! That's one reason I formed this EP was to create a portfolio of sorts to see if I could get in contact with indie game devs who may be working on retro-styled games. :) I really ought to beef up my LinkedIn profile, but not sure if that's the best route or not.

  • Lol, I instantly hallucinated flashing sprites and I'm not even on anything. This is great!

  • You really made a whole vibe!

I'm glad to hear that. I swear, I'm glad to be obsessed with that certain game music aesthetic. :)

I'm so glad to hear that. :) I used to be an avid gamer in the 90s and 2000s. These days, I stick to Animal Crossing New Horizons, and that's really it, lol. Don't need my blood pressure going up from anything too exciting. 😂 I'm more into the music of the videogames I used to play.

  • I played Scrabble last week, does that mean I’m a gamer ?
You really are a next level DAW master Jim, great music and production as we’ve come to expect… 👌

Thank you so kindly, my friend. I appreciate you a lot! ❤️

  • I think for the next videogame EP, I will form it in GR-II. I got the Kirastudio soundfont @Samu was kind enough to provide, and I can use drums from my collection of various sample packs (including now "Sounds of KSHMR Vol 5"). Then again, the question remains - do I wish to create more videogame-styled music, or is my muse leading me elsewhere?

Unfortunately, it seems the soundfont doesn't play back properly in GR-II. In other words - the various samples don't loop for the most part. It works fine in Kirastudio, and I bet it works just fine in KQ Sampei. What a muddled pain in the butt. 😂

Kirastudio definitely works fine! It doesn't have a drum sampler in it yet so I can use my own drum samples. 😅 Hopefully the dev will add that someday, even if as an IAP (which will be worth whatever the asking price is). I fucking love Kirastudio.

I just want to muck around with GR-II, and that's the muddled pain in the butt. 🤣

But You can still load user samples, even though it’s one sample per instrument (that is unless you cook your own SF2 files with custom samples), unfortunately I know no apps for iOS to create SF2 files…

This is true. ❤️ But if that's the case, I'd probably be better off using FLSM as it's easier on system resources. 😅
