ArchersPlayer is a lightweight audio file player built as an AUv3 Generator plugin. Load it into your favorite AUv3 host — like AUM, ApeMatrix, or Audiobus — and use it as a sound source alongside your other instruments and effects.

Build a playlist from individual files or entire folders. Tracks play sequentially from top to bottom, and you can reorder them with a long-press drag, shuffle the list, or tap any track to jump straight to it. A seekable playback slider lets you scrub to any point in the current track.

Need a pause between tracks? Enable the configurable track delay to insert a random gap (2–10 seconds) before the next track starts. Great for DJ/radio, live performance, rehearsal playback, or backing tracks that need breathing room.

    No sync with host which is a real bad omission, makes it pretty much pointless for any project with other instruments.

    Quite intrigued by this with my alter-ego gigging hat on. B)

    I use backing tracks live in AUM as part of an iPad setup. What I typically do is stitch my setlist together as one big file with 5 second gaps between tunes. I currently use the built-in AUM file player. I also MIDI assign play / pause to a MIDI foot controller for guitar tuning, banter etc. The whole setup is hands-free for the entire gig.

    With my developer hat on... Something like this has been on my list for a while, but with slightly different features... And it would most certainly not be free, so both hats off to the dev! :)

    Re size: Dunno how this was developed but that's about 15x the size I'd expect, unless it includes a free U2 album... :#

    Re host sync: I honestly don't know how you'd implement that in a file player without relying heavily on tempo markers, file padding and so on. 2 bar loops, yeah, easy peasy, but entire songs? I dunno... how would you align beats for example? If someone has implemented that well, I'd be very interested.

    I'd be interested in a lightweight AU player. It'd come in handy to use just as a music player as I don't get on with VLC on the iPad. Something simple with drag and drop or quick import of whole folders. I could then add an nice EQ in the chain, to compensate for the lack of a built-in iOS option.

    Well, I meant for start stop like the AUM built in fileplayer I did not imply beat sync.

    Shame it can’t loop an individual file in a list or actually loop at all be cool for drone files? Edit oh it does loop individual files. This feeding into @Rob_Jackson_Music SimpLoop could be fun for building soundscapes from samples!

    It has been updated to version 1.1.0:

    DAW Compatibility:

    • Changed audio unit type from Generator (augn) to MusicDevice (aumu), enabling the plugin to work correctly in AUM, GarageBand, and other DAW hosts that route MIDI to instrument tracks.
      • Some DAW apps don't continue to play audio in the background when you switch out of the app. This is out of our control, but it is confirmed to work properly in AUM.
      • In AUM, load the extension into an AUDIO track, not a MIDI track, else you won't hear the audio

    MIDI Triggers:

    • Full MIDI remote control: map Note On or CC messages to Play/Pause, Next Track, Previous Track, Loop Toggle, and Shuffle.
    • MIDI Learn mode — long-press any transport button or use the Settings panel to assign and configure triggers, including channel filtering (All / 1–16).
    • MIDI settings persist globally, so new plugin instances inherit your mappings automatically.
    • MIDI mappings also save/restore per-session through the host's fullState mechanism.

    Playlist Loop

    • Added a loop toggle button (repeat icon) to the transport controls.
    • Loop state persists across host sessions

    Named Playlists

    • Save and load named playlists independently of host sessions.
    • Disk icon menu in the header with Load…, Save, and Save As… options.
    • Playlists stored as JSON files with security-scoped bookmarks in the app's Application Support directory.
    • Dirty indicator (dot on disk icon) shows when the current playlist has unsaved changes.
    • Swipe-to-delete on saved playlists in the Load sheet.

    Hey folks! I just wanted to let you know that I just found this thread and have read all of your comments. I must admit I had no idea this app would be used as heavily as it has been. As you can see above the changes I made in v1.1.0 which was just from issues reported in the app reviews, but I've gathered the feedback that I've seen from here and some other places, so you can look for a new version very soon with some of the suggested improvements (and a MUCH smaller app size!). I'm bookmarking this thread so I can revisit it in case anybody has any new feedback they'd like to add. I can't promise EVERY change will make it in, but I'm trying to be as accommodating as I can. Thanks to all of you who are evidently enjoying using the plugin! =)

    ArchersPlayer v1.2.0 has been submitted and should (hopefully) be available this week. This release contains a bunch of requested features, fixes, and tweaks. If anybody finds anything that's not working like it should, please let me know! Cheers!

    Hi, just tried the new version, thanks for making this now run in AUM when the UI is closed, But I find that I can’t get it to repeat a playlist. I have 13 tracks loaded and Repeat All is on. But it generally (but not always) stops after it reaches track 13. I also had a few times where it stopped earlier in the list, like after Track 5. Not consistent, not sure what’s going on.

    Found it! Bug fix release v1.3.0 going out as soon as Apple approves it (could take up to 48hrs). Probably should have been v1.2.1 but I'm juggling many things at the moment and don't want to bother changing it. 🤣 Thanks again for the report!

    v1.5.0 is now up on the App Store, adding

    • MIDI triggering for tracks slots (tracks 1 through 20 in the playlist, regardless of what file is loaded in them)
    • MIDI triggering of playlists
    • MIDI triggering of individual tracks
    • Tracks now consist of an audio file and a custom start/stop position to define the region to be played (default is the whole file)
    • When using the warp control, place a 2nd finger down either above/below or left/right of the first finger to lock one of the axis from being changed, so you can use one or the other, or just use one finger normally to control both functions
    • Some bugfixes and optimizations
