Keeping data safe with backups, Time Machine, external drives, cloud storage, etc.

What are your ways of keeping everything backed up and safe? I had my iPad go into a short boot loop the other day when it was nearing capacity storage wise. Made me realize I haven’t done a data health check in a while and pretty much nothing is backed up.

My two main shared storage methods are 2 TB of iCloud storage and a 1 TB SSD to keep my sound library (sample packs, Logic Pro libraries, IRs, etc.) on. The SSD is accessible over the network at home. I’d love a way to keep assets folder synced between iCloud and the SSD, but I’m not sure that’s something that can be automated. I also have an old 500 GB spinner and a 1 TB SSD with some Time Machine backups from a 2012 MacBook Pro that I sometimes need to pull files from - can I keep some of those backups and partition a portion to my newer Mac mini? My wife also has an old MacBook she’d like to back up, but three backups would make me consider another drive.

Needs backing up:
128 GB iPhone 12 Pro
256 GB Mac mini (need to set up Time Machine)
512 GB M2 iPad Pro 12.9”

I’ve kinda put backups on the back burner after getting the 2 TB iCloud storage since I figured everything important is stored there. But it sure would be a pain to lose data and have to manually reinstall everything, get everything straight in settings, etc.

  • I don’t have any input, but am definitely in the same boat minus the iCloud and network storage - I got nothing.

Need to fix that asap, so tuning in here for the discussion.

  • I might not be in as bad of shape for mobile backups. It looks like everything is backed up when I go check settings. I do still need to figure out the Time Machine Mac backups, and maybe a way of managing keeping iCloud and SSD assets synced.

I use iMazing along with the built-in backups and I copy important data to an NAS or hard drive. IMazing allows you to retrieve some files from a backup without doing a full restore which is handy.

I recently started using iMazing too, well maybe 6-8 months ago, I’ve backed up my device but haven’t needed to use the backup. It seems to be a great solution and people in this forum typically mention it as a good backup tool.

I also use iCloud, google drive for some things, and several external hard drives/SSD’s for audio, video, photos, documents.

I used to do a full back up to my PC a few times a year, but Apple has completely changed the iTunes app on PC and I had trouble getting my devices to show up like they used to in iTunes. After messing with that for a bit, and getting frustrated, I just downloaded iMazing, used the free tier to fully backup my device. It is very straightforward and free for basic services.

Does it now, I didn’t realize that feature was available. Cool.
