BreakBud - Breakbeat Drum Synth & Sequencer (Ratchets Update!)

Edit: The app has released!
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/breakbud-break-beat-drum-synth/id6758786601
https://keybudapp.com/breakbud

Hey everyone, I can't wait to share this new app with you I've been working on.

  • 6 voices, 100% synthesized no samples, insanely good optimized dsp
  • 16 step polyrhythmic (1-16 steps) sequencer per voice
  • 16 pads
  • Per-pad sequencer and voice parameter locks
  • Crazy microtiming capabilities (swing+nudge+humanizer) per-voice
  • Algorithmic pattern generator (instant breaks)
  • From mechanical techno to dilla style pattern generation
  • MIDI (of course lol) for pads, voice, sequencer
  • iCloud based pattern manager
  • AUv3 multiout per voice (go crazy with your fx chain)
  • Sidechain on the main mixer + panning per voice

DM your email address for the beta invitiation & please share your thoughs on how awesome the app is

  • Hey, looks cool!

    Awesome man, I’m interested.

  • Very cool. DMed

  • I really like this app, it's super easy and gives you loads of control.

This is a full drum synth, not a sampler.

Tons of generative beats, the snare is kinda weak, would tweak those voices.

Weak? What would you suggest to make it better? I think it's pretty flexible with its parameter set, but I can work on it more.

  • I think it are the presets of the snare that are a bit odd, but with some tweaking it can be (a lot) better. Yet whatever I try there is still some harmonic sound present in the snare no matter how you tweak it. What I like is that when you set the Body of the snare to 100% you can eliminate the traditional snare sound and have some nice (fm?) voice to play with.

I did not dive deep into this yet, but my first half hour with this, I do like it a lot! Great sounds, well done! Maybe a ‘solo’ button below the mute as well?

I would like to add that when the decay is set to 0% the snare is still too long for my taste, I wish I could make it really short and snappy.

  • Just gave it a 5 min spin before heading out. Agree on the snare sound being weak.

I am more interested in sending midi out to other drum apps. So will try that tonight hopefully

  • Yeah, I dunno- sometimes I'm feeling it but it grows tiresome. I've just been muting it. Lol

  • Yes please! More synthesized drums!

  • I wonder why this is more or less focused on breakbeats, I find this to be the least interesting sales pitch. I see it as a cool drum synth with a nice sequencer in where you can hop between variations. I would love to have it some more synthesis sounds, make it deeper like a full drum synth. Maybe add more FM voices, like a Ruismaker FM.

  • Ok I updated the snare, it's more snappy and less noisy, while still being flexible. Let me know what you think!

Snare is better now. Still getting a slight tonal quality when the body level is set to a higher level. Not bad as it is now, but I think still could be improved a little (no idea how)

  • I really dig this drum machine, I have a bunch of AUM BUD templates I should share... you can make some amazing music just using Cem's tools.

I think a lot of people are gonna love it.

  • Pushed a new version with even more snare tweaks. Also added the new step input button for dragging vs tapping input. The dragging input is not velocity sensitive, in the tapping mode you can drag up/down for adjusting the step velocity like before. The step UI is also updated with grouped steps.

  • I find with snare Body set to much more than 30% I can hear a tonal quality still. But 0-25% or so I can get things dialled in decently enough.

Just tried sending midi to dm10 and was sounding good. Is there an Undo? I found myself overwriting some of the 16 slots occasionally with a new pattern and wished I could go back..

  • About the snare: it’s more snappy now. Is it correct that the pitch doesn’t seem to change when the Body is set to 0%? Is that a bug? The pitch needs to go lower to color the snare, but bringing in the body brings in harmonics as well..

About Rim: it is ‘almost’ possible to create a clap 👏from the Rim by tweaking, thanks to the Burst setting. When I load 2 instances of BreakBud and change in the second Rim some settings and crank the Swing up, it’s very close to a clap. So I wonder if it is somehow possible to add or change some settings in the Rim so you can also bend it towards a Clap?! Is it Ok to post a video I made from it?

Yes, it is a bug, let me fix that quickly. I'll also update the pitch range on the snare 👍

Correct, rimshot turns in to a clap with the bursts! On my original design, I had clap and tom voices too, 8-voices in total. But I merged clap in to rim, and tom into FM because they were very close to each other. Each voice is very versatile imo, would love to hear more from the beta testers.

Sure, a video would be great 👍

Great! But I think the rim voice kind of needs to double or triple to create a convincing clap (or some other trick).
In this quick ‘n dirty vid it’s 2 instances so 2 voices, but I think it needs one or 2 more to really get that clap feeling. It’s still too thin now.

👉Just another quick thing, hitting the randomizer does not seem to make patterns for the FM voice.

  • Really liking the rhythms I can get with this, some really swingy, offset, and off kilter type beats that still work.
The individual rates, swing, offset, and humanization, etc, per voice really help achieve those rhythms. Also the pattern switching pads are really clean and cool.

    @cem_olcay
I found a small thing, nothing major, had a few suggestions, and a question. I sent you a dm for the details. Cheers man.

  • Breakbud isn’t responding to host transport stop/start for me (running in AUM).

No, that was confusing for me as well at first, it works by pressing one of the pads inside Breakbud. But you can also put a corresponding note in your sequencer and drag it towards, say, 16 steps. I prefer if this app was autoplay as well, I don’t understand why it is the way right now, maybe it is something that will be added/fixed.

I forgot adding that. The new version responds to transport.
Also the FM and rim voices are updated, they are way better now
I think I can wrap this up and release on Thursday.

Yes! Much better, great! I made a small vid with the new clap. I think it works well.
I wonder, is it possible to change the pitch of a step as well? I haven’t found that one yet.

Steps are not parameter-locked, but the pads are.
You can set the velocity of each step individually though (drag your finger up/down on a step).

Yes, I know about the velocity but it would be great if it could be done like this for the pitch of each step as well, especially for the FM part so you bring in some melody. Maybe a toggle between velocity and pitch? B)

Also, I wonder if you can copy/paste between pads?
