A Simpler Time

This began while I was designing a Retro Synth patch in Logic for a wind controller. At some point, on a whim, I hit record and began improvising for about 20 minutes. There was no accompaniment or forethought, just a single solo line.

After listening to it back many times, I started trimming the midi performance back and building a composition around it.. finding harmonies, adding instruments, and orchestrating it. This is the end result. The woodwind melody heard throughout is the original improvised solo.

    Magnificent! I love how you can take an improvised melody and build a beautiful ensemble arrangement around it. That’s what I try to do, but you do it so much better than me. Similar to what Bill Holman did with Just Friends. I would love to hear a few tracks from Fly By Night sometime. I think that was well before CDs, but I’m sure you still have the vinyl.

    @Paulieworld - Im sure I have the vinyl somewhere but alas no turntable. A few years ago someone had posted it somewhere but I can’t find it. And I take issue with me being better at it than you. I can’t do what you do at all. I’ve tried.
