Any interest in the Macbook Neo?

I just got a M2 13” Air and Magic Keyboard. Seems essentially about the same except for OS. My setup is also quite bulky!

  • I won't lie - it has intrigued me to an extent. But, I'm a creature of habit and most likely won't be switching to any sort of laptop in the near future. Then again, "never say never", hehe.

  • An iPad with no touch screen. No thanks.

  • I doubt it will prove to be a great music workstation. It’ll be interesting to hear how people fare running Ableton on these things, but I’m not expecting much.

    😄

  • definitely will get one.
it's cool looking, properly sized (even less than 13" – something very uncommon nowadays when every next model gets bigger and bigger and bigger), and has full-blown macOS.

of course it's not a «music workstation» for projects with 5–6 dozens of tracks and some 20 plugins on each but i suspect it's totally sufficient for something like 12–16-track Bitwig project – and that's what i really need on a laptop.

  • My A18X iPad pro handles all the music stuff I need, so it would be just fine for me. But so is the M1 Pro MacBook Pro I already have, so I will stick with that.

What year is your iPad Pro? iPad Pro (2020) was the last model before the M chips, and it used an A12Z Bionic, much less powerful than the A18 Pro.

The Macbook Neo has an A18 Pro processor, which (I think) was first released in late 2024 in the iPhone 16 Pro. The A18 Pro benchmarks mostly show it as having better single core performance than M1 chip, and very comparable multi-core performance.

  • Oh man this is so tempting. I’ve been needing a MacBook for years now since my MacBook Pro died. I’ve felt very gimped in a lot of my work and every half measure has really left me burned. Cheap HP laptop that crapped out after a year of mid performance, a gaming rig repurposed for work, an M2 mini, my m2 iPad Pro - all of them left me frustrated without my primary tool.

My M2 mini has almost gotten me there but being tethered to a desk and super tight on 256 GB storage has been a sticking point. I’ve really done my best work over the years on the couch with a MacBook.

All that said, this looks like it would be another half measure. It’s tempting because it’s 1/4 of the price of my ideal MacBook Pro, but I imagine I’ll be selling myself short again.

  • No RAM upgrades though from the look. Just one upgrade to 512 gig storage.

8 gig of ram won't cut it for audio work much above basic level, I don't think

What do you mean ( audio work )

    Midi tracks vs audio tracks.

Or audio work ( Music production in general )

Its just where iv added audio tracks to my setup, thinking audio recordings will be less demanding than a synth and midi.

    You must mean music production.

My iPhone 16 Pro Max has 8gb ram and handled client work in FL Studio Mobile like a champ! (I actually was to start the project on iPhone and move it to my iPad, but eh, lol). And this was no small simple Acid House track either but rather a full blown production.

That being said, 512gb isn't really adequate enough storage for my purposes anymore. I have over 25 sample packs, each being multiple GBs in size, from the entire Samples from Mars collection, to Leviathan packs from Black Octopus, Sounds of KSHMR Vol 1-5, etc.

But even 512gb storage isn't a dealbreaker. For me, it's being without my beloved romplers like Module Pro, Beathawk, etc. Another is having to fiddle around with license keys. F that. I'm sticking with iOS. Lol.

Yeah, really surprised they’ve limited to that, it’s going to struggle with any form of multitasking. The Air’s look like a better performance and future-proofed option - for a few hundred quid more you get 16gb and M4 chip.

Mac OS takes more resources, plus the RAM plus contributes to graphic performance as it uses a unified memory architecture. This means the CPU and GPU share the same pool of 8GB memory.

I wouldn’t go near anything less than 16gb these days, even my 6 year old Intel has 16gb.

That makes sense. :) I didn't realize Mac OS takes more resources. Well regardless, the Neo is a no-go for me. I can see it being put through its paces well in an education environment as an alternative to Windows, but for media production, the Neo just isn't quite there sad to say. As previously stated, the romplers and such I need for full music production just aren't there.

It’s fast - I reckon for general office type stuff, web browsing, emails etc. It’s a decent option at the price, but for graphics, music, video etc., better to get the Air or MacBook Pro.

Even my M1 16gb Mini struggles a bit sometimes with Ableton, so for music making I’d recommend an M2 or above, with 16/512 minimum spec.

Xcode and data crunching in MATLAB, Python, etc. is the focus of the laptop, so I’d definitely need some RAM and a fan. The more I look at the Neo I’m realizing it wont do what I need. I’m trying to offload any non-production work from my M2 Mini since the OS + music apps + coding leaves no breathing room for space.

If only my iPad could do serious coding work. But when I finally get a MacBook Pro I think I’ll be golden with the Mac Mini as the desktop environment, the iPad as the suped up sketch pad/playground for music and art, and a MacBook for dev work and I’ll have a pretty smooth setup. Those MacBook Pros are so damn expensive though.

  • It releases on March 11, which is just over a day away, so the reviews should be coming shortly.

In any case, if you want one delivered, all of the colors/configurations now have shipping delays. In-store pickup is still available for March 11, but I'd get there early if you really want one.

It’s painful, but they are amazing things. I bought a 14” M4 Pro (base model 24/512) for £1800 via Amazon about a year and a half ago (just checked, and it’s now £100 more for the same laptop!). I’m hoping to get at least 5 years out if it, since I’m still using my 2020 Intel daily for work, and I kept my old 2012 MBP going right up until last year!

The performance is just off the charts, and has changed my old way of working (freezing MIDI tracks to audio as I go along) so I can now keep all the plugins loaded for better editing. Little things matter too - like the extra ports, and pro-motion. I’d really miss those if I dropped back to an Air.

But yeah, hideously expensive things, and I had to save up for this one for a number of years before even considering it! On the plus side I’ve reigned in my app spending, a planned future iPad Pro is now off the cards, and it’ll eventually take over the day-job work when the Intel finally croaks.

  • Both my Macbook Airs have 16gb ram, so no idea what difference 8gb makes.

I can see this Mac being a real boost to Apples user base.

The only issue for myself is that I have a sneaky feeling that Apple will use this cheaper placement to push the prices up of the Air and Pro models, which will effect me long term, as I am all in on the Macbook as a music making tool now for my fixed setups.

I do plan to utilyze my iPad for a future sofa and allotment setup, when I get around to it.

The M5 Pro is £200 more than when I bought my M4 Pro, but it comes with a standard 1tb drive, so that's the same price as if I'd upgraded my 512gb version.

I wouldn't be surprised if prices do go up though, with the oil and supply chain disruption stuff going on at the moment.

I'm up to my knees in the Mac/Ableton ecosystem, but I reckon this one will keep going longer than I will.

I considered the Pro mostly for its extra i/o, but the cheap deal I got on my initial Air was too good to pass and now I have 2 Airs. I did originally buy the second for 'on the sofa', but now im building a second fixed laptop setup with a 'coming this year' Ableton Push controller which also lets me update Ableton Live from Standard to Suite cheaper than normal.

That leaves my iPad for the sofa when I get a device to combine it with....possibly an MPC or similar.

The biggest pain in the butt, apart from saving the money for the devices, has been connecting it all together! I'm aiming at using my studio monitors for all devices in the room, which has needed quite a bit of expense on cabling and switcher blocks, so I never need to plug anything in or out.

Eventually I will be able to use both my fixed laptop setups, either individually or together, or switch to my sofa setup or my hifi. A real studio person would probably hate the compromises ive made, but it works for the wife and myself - making a tv, music listening, home studio room with the most luxuriously comfortable sofa weve ever owned! Lol

The laptop/Push combination will probably work better for you when you get one.

I have my Push setup on a desk, where it's connected to a pair of speakers. It also works as an audio interface, and saved me a bit of cash not having to buy one.

I mostly use the laptop slouched in a chair, but if I want to be a bit more adventurous, all I have to do is plonk it on the desk, plugin the Push's USB cable, and I'm off - big speakers, MPE, proper knobs, and an input for my guitar. There's a monitor too, if I feel like a bit more screen space.

I'm getting slightly tempted by the Move now as well...as that's had some nice updates recently...
