Anyone dig Panda Bear, the Books, etc?

I worked hard at the end of March to get my track-a-month goal for April ready to go by April Fool's Day since this one is a nod to the red herring, the canard, the sleight of musical hand. A joke, if you will. If you get to the end of the track perhaps you will decide if "you actually get it".

Performed live in Koala (lots of upfront loops and samples loaded in) as an homage to my sampling heroes (Animal Collective, Panda Bear, the Books, etc).

  • Oh man I haven’t thought about The Books in a looong time. Lemon of Pink is up there in my top 10 albums for sure. Always wish I got to see them live before they split up, but got close enough attending a performance by Zammuto (Nicks side project after they split) and they performed a couple Books tunes w some video accompaniment as an encore. Cool to find another fan 🤙
Great track! I can definitely hear the influences (geologist, person pitch, etc). And the fact that all was done within Koala is quite impressive. Thanks for sharing, would love to hear more

Cool track, nice sounds in there. really liked The Books! The only Panda Bear song I know is the one with the video where their heads burn up and explode. That was a nice video.

Great to know that there are other fans on the forums here! I never got to see the Books live either (or Zammuto) but I've worn out my copy of Lemon of Pink. I really admire how they seamlessly meld the acoustic instruments with the sampling--it's organic and just feels right, at least on that album. Thanks for listening to the track. I've challenged myself to complete a composition a month in 2026--the other track that uses a similar live Koala performance (I do use loops in Koala, fyi) is from February:

    Thanks for listening @JustinOllman!

  • i love the books! been listening to them for like 2 decades at this point. i saw them live twice, both times were pretty spectacular.

for awhile in college animal collective was my favorite band. i listened to person pitch a lot.

  • @lukesleepwalker
Enjoyed second track as well. Looking forward to next month 🤙

  • No clue about the references but I enjoyed the eclectic mix of sounds, especially the strings 👍

  • Love Panda Bear and Animal Collective. Im definitely gonna check out the Books now!.
Man, this is really good!. I specially love the part at around 1:30 where the noisy (guitars ?) come in.
I’m curious about how you performed this. Are you doing the loops in koala or elsewhere and you use koala as a triggering thingy?.
    Again, I love it 🤟❤️❤️

Hey there, thanks for your note. Yes, I did all the loops and one shots in Koala. I started down the path of using Loopy to get everything aligned to a grid, but I didn't like how "perfect" it sounded after I tried a couple of sections looping/arranging. So, I created just enough loops in Koala to keep the flow going and then manually started/stopped each loop as I was simultaneously playing the one shot samples. The only post-production thing I did was smoothed out the fade out at the end.

You should check out Lemon of Pink by the Books!
