That's interesting. Thanks for bringing this up. And connection via USB hub is essential - at least for me. I use my StarTech hub both as a hub and to power the BlueBox. No problems on my Linux laptop with this setup.
Did you read my edit(s) yet? In fact, it doesn't work. Let me know if a direct connection changes anything for you.
Did not read the edits until now. I tried with a direct connection. The problem is that I don't have the original splitter cable and it's not available in Europe. The shipping rates from the US are insane. So I had to do some DIY improvisation - still crackling....
I do have the original 1010music splitter cable — they love to relate issues to user errors / wrong cables, as if this is some sort of alchemy — anyway, no difference.
Feedback from Superbooth @catherder: A new Bluebox firmware update will be released to address inconsistencies in USB audio across platforms/operating systems (Apple/iOS/Windows/Android) and to fix known issues.
Fantastic! And thanks for helping with pushing this forward.
We'll see more clearly once this update is released. The Audio DSP programming on the Bento and Blackbox MKII was done by an external German programmer (Polytec? [just a guess]). The Audio DSP programming for the Bluebox Eurorack & Desktop versions has been done in-house by 1010music. Both the Bento and the new Blackbox MKII spot two main DSP processors, whereas the Bluebox models spot one.
And: I've been rather surprised that customers/users have been eating/accepting the flawed USB Audio implementation(s) for so long, instead of speaking out . . .
I do hope it will improve things. With customer acceptance I do think that we might actually be in the minority with regards to iPad USB issues. I just invested some money and got myself an Oyaide Neo USB B - C cable. The bluebox works perfectly on my Dell 2in1 Laptop that has PD USB-C ports - and Linux (Ubuntu Studio 24.04) as OS.
Having a working bluebox on the Laptop I do discovered another problem though:
The volume "faders" go down to -60dB and then comes "off". This means I cannot do a smooth fade out all the way down to silence. I left a message on their Discord. Let's see what they say once they have recovered from the Superbooth hangover.
@MMS I got a reply from Steve from 1010Music within a few minutes. That's good news on a weekend. Maybe "Superbooth awareness". He said they introduced the -60dB volume threshold so they could squeeze a more logarithmic characteristic on the fairly small touchscreen faders. Voicing my disagreement (no mixer behaves like this) I filed a feature request to remove the -60dB threshold at least when the volume is controlled via MIDI or using the encoder knobs (that are endless and do not need this limitation anyway).
@catherder Thanks for your additional feedback and for pushing as well. Users shall continue addressing what needs to be fixed and what might be improved. Removing the -60 dB threshold for external MIDI control is a great idea.
If you are on their Discord, then please give my feature request (to be found under Bluebox-desktop-wishlist) a like.
Yes, I am — Will be doing right away.
