what would have been praise of recent 4pockets synths becomes, why i keep on tera pro-ing
Ongoing evaluations and occasional revisiting of different synths, I was just now finding oscidia and wavecloud to be feature wise best-in-class of their respective synth types, which I wasn't expecting to be the case. The feature sets are comprehensive , for example all the different warping modes in oscidia which is really exciting to make use of and i wish was in all wavetable synths, MPE works well, complete "many-to-many" style mod matrix routing, but, bugs persist, i'm getting frequent stuck notes when playing at fairly modest speed in oscidia, and just now had a crash while saving a preset so an hour of sound designing is gone. It just means i keep coming back to tera pro as being the all rounder with the least bugs in my usage, as there's no tolerance for regular stuck notes and crashes in a performance. its in stark contrast to say, loading up pianoteq and playing 4 hours straight and never having a stuck note and never having a crash. my own fault for wanting both cake, and on a stick? IE comprehensive completeness of sound design affordances, MPE, mod matrix, AND no bugs! the dreaming continues. but shout out to both Paul for nevertheless brilliant if in progress synths, and Harry for the as always goto synth, after all these years and still "fantastic".

Haven't been using Oscidia much though I was very impressed when I learned it. Stuck notes seem to be a sadly common problem in many mpe synths. This can also be hard to diagnose, as it's sometimes also relayed to the controller. When I complained to Roli years ago that I was getting lots of stuck notes with various mpe synths, they told me I might have better results if using a USB cable rather than Bluetooth. On many levels, mpe seems to be a proper minefield. Tera Pro has its own problems - it doesn't allow about gain reduction, for example, which annoys me, as 'playing' volume is one of the coolest things to do with mpe.
I don't know if I'm misunderstanding you on gain reduction, but my approach to that has been aftertouch as the control of the amp envelope's sustain level, which is ongoing in real time rather than only triggered on note. there are other approaches that work, but i probably agree as a generalism because Tera Pro doesn't have a fully comprehensive matrix of many mod sources routable cross-routable to many destinations, so I start looking at workarounds, and I did find myself wanting a gain stage module separate to the final amp, in a kind of Reaktor way.
Yes you are right that stuck notes is a common thing with MPE, but the good synths don't suffer it. Linn implemented lowering of USB midi data rate for synths that don't handle it properly.
I asked Harry a while back what was the best way to map gain to mpe. He suggested mapping to something other than Amp env sustain, can't remember offhand what it was, but I remember we discussed it at the time and he agreed that it wasn't ideal. Next time I look at Tera Pro I'll compare the two ways, thnx
I'd be interested to know what his suggestion was. Amp sustain isn't perfect for all patches because the attack and decay are outside of the control, but in other cases is perfect because you might not want the initial note on sound to be softened very much at all. I do have patches where I instead just have aftertouch control volume levels of for example mixer inputs, but I wish there was equivalent to the ADSR times velocity option, which would beADSR times aftertouch (or CC74 but I wouldnt use that myself), which would set up that the level at the peak of the attack was modulated to begin with and sustain continued to be.
It’s true that on paper 4pockets synths are the feature kings. He really has a knack for seeing what could push a synth into new realms. Also true though that he moves on quickly, and refining the code doesn’t happen quite as much as they all deserve imo. I can’t fault him though since i imagine it’s mostly because you gotta produce to make a living in the ios app world. And he certainly does.
I wish so badly that Tera changed its modular design to something that allowed adding modules and wiring them after. I just can’t. I really tried, but i just can’t.
Synthmaster 3 will be my gold.
…
@Tentype I would love for you to be right, its like a hybrid of Phase Plant extensiveness and,, Vital, maybe, sort of? Astounding possibilities. I don't have faith because of the way things were in the past, so many showstopping bugs in 2 that I also just can't, and the current process even though its open and consultative doesn't give me confidence yet. We'll see a beta of 3 (not player), what, next year?
Sorry that you just can't
I'm ok with the backwards logic, backwards even though it is - it does beg the question though,, why??? or, wtf? like why would you do that? Maybe the answer is that this way you do have an efficiency of how many times you click/press. If you think about the Reaktor style of add module then patch, there's a lot to do, whereas in the backwards virsyn way, patching is a one-move adding of a module while simultaneously patching. I'll live with it.
I much prefer the 4Pockets UI’s to Tera Pro - that one just feels like hard work.
Haven’t used Oscidia much though, that one would really benefit from a random opinion to inspire user patches, such as the one implemented in Rings FX.
I really like Oscidia but I must admit I was slightly disappointed that it didn’t get the usual 4Pockets rush of refinements and feature additions that most of his apps receive just after release. For an example, it would be really useful if Noise were an option for all of the oscillators and not limited to the single dedicated Noise voice. Still an amazing synth though with some excellent features such as the sequencers which are really flexible.
