"Tape Test" (A BoC-inspired Ambient piece in Korg Gadget)
https://on.soundcloud.com/UfLiyoWRVQwlll2kW1
I admit, I rushed this piece a bit (not in the mastering, but in the creation) just so I could test the "Canadian Boards" preset in TB Reelbus pointed out to me by @Fear2Stop (with special shoutout to @colonel_mustard for pointing out Reelbus in the first place)! 😂 Which is why it's somewhat repetitive. I needed to know if I could get close to the vibe of Boards of Canada.
Now, I'm not trying to copy Boards of Canada but rather do my own thing in a similar vibe to them. Yes I used Korg Gadget, my favorite music creation app as of late. I think I've mostly gotten there, but what do you think? Looking for some feedback here.

F**k me this is brilliant
Thanks mate.
I only hope I nailed the vibe. 🙏
This is just plain beautiful.
Not only do you get the sound right (i.e. not overdoing it) but the tune has that nice meandering quality that says BoC to me.
One of my favorite tracks by you.🙂
Sounds really nice. Add some hip hop drums and a few samples to help tell your story and bam. But is nice a chill as is.
ah, that's lovely. i'm getting a krautrock album-closer vibe, like a sunrise over a sci-fi city.
something about it reminds me of kosmische läufer, which is a fairly recent musical project that sneakily pretended to be a discovered archive from the 70s.

(this is a compliment btw.)
Jim, I knew it! This is really awesome.
Really dig it Jim! Love that slowly evolving filter and tape sound. I’m gonna have to check out this Reelbus thing!
That means so much to me. ❤️ Especially from a great Ambient producer like you, friend. I'm glad I nailed the BoC sound.
I'll be sure to add some lighter Dilla-styled drums in one of the upcoming projects for sure. Thanks mate.
I honestly can't wait to listen to this either after this evening's gig or tomorrow!
Hell yeah, mate. This time, this tracks is from me.
Thanks mate! Here's Reelbus...

Still under a tenner USD, and works both on iPhone and iPad. Lovely app.
If someone told me that this was a lost BoC track, I’d have no problem believing them.
Omgosh, bestie. 🫣 You're so kind to say that. 😅 Seriously, I'm blushing.
Better to make a good copy then a bad original.
So true, mate.
Please don’t add any drums, it’s just fine 🙏
Thank you so much mate.
Dear lord. This is amazing. Love it mate.
I really dig that even when you mention rushing it, it's still so cool
Cheers mate.
Thank you so much!
That's a great one @jwmmakerofmusic! I think that you did nail the vibe quite well!
BTW, to all tape effect users out there: Extreme pitch drifts never existed in analog tape machines, and broken machines weren't used for recording because it's an "effect" that can quickly become annoying, so please don't overdo it. IMO it should be barely noticeable.
That was so beautiful! Definitely has a closing track feel to it, and I would surely listen to that album!
Which leads to something I’ve been wanting to ask you for a while now, considering how consistently you produce and release music: have you ever released an album? I would love to listen to it if you have. If you haven’t, is it something you’d consider doing someday?
Thank you so much, mate. ❤️ I really do love BoC and glad to reconnect with them right before their album announcement last month. 😅
😅 Perhaps I'm guilty of this. I do love that effect.
Oh I've done a couple albums and a few EPs for sure.
This Tech House EP for instance, which is (currently) being neglected.

And this album done in Auxy Studio last year.

Do enjoy. ❤️
I've heard much worse examples for sure, don't worry 😅
Lol, fair enough. 😂
