Does anyone know if the always on recorder is for audio only or does it also do midi?

For now it's audio only but I'm quite sure once AUV3 midi plug-ins are properly support it'll record midi as well as stated on their roadmap.

  • Awesome!
Is there already an app that always on records midi?

If we don't count LogicPro for iPad I don't know any other apps that do it but if anyone knows I'd be happy to know too :sunglasses:

  • Yeah that would be so wonderful!
Just yesterday when I was setting up Decent Sampler and began to play some really nice piano stuff and 10 minutes later I thought, oh man! How I wish I had recorded that!
But midi is cool as it doesn’t take up hardly any space!

I had Sessions for a short while, it only recorded audio, it did have a retro record function which was good for capturing 15 minutes worth of playing just in case you accidentally played that “never to be remembered masterpiece, I had a refund because it would not perform as well as I expected, I replaced it with the KeyStage app, this also only records audio, but it is far superior to Sessions with it’s ability to display and change sheet music as you play, also seamlessly changing more than one instrument at a time compared to Sessions only able to change one instrument at a time
Using a DAW such as Cubasis 3 with the record enable while you noodle away on a Midi track is a good idea, just in case you have snippets that sound good and want to keep them.
Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

  • I got this recently and dabbled more on Mac than iPad since I’m already on the path to being an “AUM power user”. I’m excited for side chain functionality for Mac so I can better learn side chaining for Mac specific apps. Specifically the Polyverse apps - they act as a MIDI effect for other tracks. It’s doable in Logic Pro but the setup isn’t all that intuitive for me while simultaneously learning Logic.

Does Keystage support side-chaining? How about Mainstage? I know it’s a bit of a weird must have feature for me, but one of the main reasons I got a Mac was for those Polyverse plugins and that’s a core functionality.

No, the KeyStage app is a master keyboard controller where you can set up all the instrument apps for your project and have them selected either using MIDI CCs sent from a DAW, these change Sections that have instruments apps whilst you are playing your last notes with the current instrument apps seamlessly, you can even import your audio backing track into the Audio Player and have markers positioned at various stages in the song that will also change from one section to another, exactly the same way as using MIDI CCs.
It has a full mixer panel with a sub mixer for inserting different fx plugins into various Sections, sounds complicated, but it is quite easy after a bit of a learning curve, @Samu recommended KeyStage, I’m so glad he did, it has totally change my keyboard setup for the better, but unfortunately it doesn’t sound like KeyStage will do what you ask.

  • Mainstage on the Mac (which shares the core audio-engine with Logic) definitely supports side-chain but is as far as I know not available for the iPad.

As for Sessions the scene-switching smoothly switches all active instruments from one scene to the next.

For me Sessions.app a close to perfect 'noodle station' when messing around with apps, sure multi-out and midi support for AUv3's would be nice to have as well as side-chain support but I'm quite sure it'll come sooner or later but too many additions and the core-focus of the app (which is live performance) would be lost if it would turn into a 'Semi DAW' with multi-track recording and editing...

In the end what matters is that everyone finds something that at least partially works for them as there will never be any apps that provide everything everyone needs :sunglasses:

I’m using Sessions on Mac for guitar, hence the MainStage comparison. I’d say some of the key effects I lean on in my signal chain rely on multi-out. Primarily FAC Medusa/Bandit for splitting the signal and processing different frequencies with other effects. So that would be something I’d look for in a live performance centric app - at least more so than multi tracks.

I really like the interface and how straightforward it is. The widgets are a ton of fun to set up - but again is limited since I can’t use them for my live effects relying on side chaining/multi-out. It would be awesome to have those on a Mac + iOS cross compatible app.

  • I’m tempted to grab this with it being on sale and MIDI plugins + side chain in the works. Would side chaining imply multi-out capabilities as well?

Pianoteq has a midi archiver that can record all midi, and it never loses it, saves it in files you can access later. Midi is so lightweight this is no problem.

    =======

I haven't tested it, and it would use some extra resources, but I assume you could use Pianoteq in your host to enable midi archiving even if you're not using Pianoteq:

    1. Load a Pianoteq instance,
    2. make sure Pianoteq midi archiving is on
    3. set Pianoteq volume to 0 (assuming you're playing a different instrument)
    4. route midi to Pianoteq instance in addition to whatever instrument you're playing

I expect this would work to save all the midi even in Pianoteq free version, although if you try to play that midi in Pianoteq free version there are eight specific notes that won't sound.

While I think this would work, it's probably a little cumbersome for a feature that you want to be always-on without even thinking about it. But who knows, maybe someone will get use out of it. . .

  • Hi,
do you think sessions will become an iphone app at some point?
I would love that but it's not on the roadmap.

  • I bought this last night in the hope that midi effect hosting had been added since I tried it out in July last year, but I don't think it has having checked the roadmap

Is there any inkling of when this might happen?

Try asking Open Planet Software directly - https://openplanet.zendesk.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new
They're usually pretty quick to reply and helpful...

  • Yer they a bit slow with the roadmap that’s published. Maybe it’s a part time side project?

  • I’ve kept my eye on this one for MIDI effect implementation. Once that’s implemented I’ll hop right on it.

    Loopy Pro’s retrospective recording.

  • Still interested in this app...

Midi plugins are tested in beta at the moment.

This app has been updated a lot recently:

Sessions 4.0 introduces a new multi-threaded audio engine that spreads the audio processing load over multiple CPU cores
Sessions 5.0 introduces two new features - Session Mix and Pinned Scenes - that work together to unlock a whole new way to perform live with Sessions.
Sessions 6.0 introduces automatic Plug-in Latency Compensation
Sessions 7.0 introduces support for Plug-in Side Chains.
    Sessions 8.0 introduces Backing Tracks.

    And soon Midi plugins

In that case I think I should set up a few sessions beforehand. I ended up getting the app but haven’t had much chance to try it out.

  • Sessions is growing fast!! I was waiting for midi plugins! midi out to extarnal instruments and I´m ready to switch!

  • I am super interested in this app, and would buy it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, after contacting the developer, no plans to make it backwards compatible to those of us stuck on update version 17. Yo, even with knowing I would be limited in processing power comparatively speaking, I would see what it COULD do on 17. Wish I could download it.

  • Has anyone tested this against AUM to see if the multi threading does make a difference in how many AUV3's can run?
