lukesleepwalker’s 2026 resolution: a track a month (updated for May)

I respect how many of y’all finish tracks and post them. One of my resolutions for 2026 is to post a track a month. Good news (for me at least): January is in the bag!

This one is helped along by @azul3D_Apps fantastic Piano Motifs.

Comments

  • Nice @lukesleepwalker! Very original, with hints of vintage prog rock. The saturated instruments enhance the texture and character of the track.

  • That was awesome! I agree with @azul3D_Apps , there’s a prog rock vibe, it reminds me maybe of Genesis, but I a non-derivative way. I really like how the vocals sound - expressive but somewhat placid, I don’t know.

The arrangement was beautiful too. Feel free to talk about how you produced the track, regarding Piano Motifs and whatever other aspects you feel like talking about. Looking forward to the February track!

  • I agree with Rodrigo. Has a Prog-Rock feel to it. I really dig it mate. I'm surprised I wasn't following you on SoundCloud yet, but I remedied that. ❤️

Thanks for the feedback! While I’m a fan of Gabriel-era Genesis I don’t really listen to a lot of prog rock so I’m tickled by the references. I’d say I’m more influenced by Radiohead and spirit of the beehive style prog, I suppose.

I wrote the melody and lyrics while out on a walk in the pre-dawn frigid winter weather. The arrangement is supposed to evoke the weird sensation of being out in the clear, crisp winter air but sound is attenuated by the muffling from hats and hoods, etc. That’s why I opted for the saturated tones.

The key apps used are piano motifs (of course), king of digital, Beathawk, kronecker for the marimba and bell sounds. Those are run through effectrix to get the woozy pulsing saturation. I also use Koala to strategically place samples to create some interesting textures. The guitar tones come from Steel guitar.

Speaking of koala and sampling, my February tune is already under way and it’s almost all sample based so far. Quite a different type of tune.

    Thx for listening.

Fuck yeah! I'm looking forward to this one.

I think it was the vocals that got me thinking exactly in Peter Gabriel-era Genesis; but, like Azul said, it’s a very original tune.

I only listened to a single spirit of the beehive album (their latest, I guess) once, and as I was really tired from taking care of my then newborn child, I don’t remember it very well, though I did find it really interesting. Do you recommend any of their albums?

And thanks for detailing the apps you’ve used. I think I’ve underused Kronecker and your song made me want to work with it more; the same with Effectrix (which I think I’ve never used, actually) and Steel Guitar.

Really excited about the February track! I really like it when an artist delivers a body of work where you can’t tell from one song how the next is going to sound.

  • Well this was a nice tune! Love the mood, very 60s-70s but with a touch of modernism. Looking forward for the next ones :)

  • @Rodrigo1709 I forgot one app that is also a key ingredient: Polywave. It's another good one for the saturated, pulsing textures. And again, thanks for listening and the feedback.

Thanks, I dig your stuff. Followed you back.

  • Great work, quirky and original… roll on February 👍

    Thanks, Tony!

@Rodrigo1709 you asked about how I used Piano motifs. In this case, I wrote the idiosyncratic chord progression on guitar and then programmed it into PM. From there, I kept trying different motifs until I heard different parts that I liked, pairing those motifs with various plug ins (see above). PM is a crazy fun and helpful workflow tool when I stay patient and open minded as to where an arrangement might go.

Thanks for explaining it, @lukesleepwalker ! Indeed, it makes me think how I've only scratched the surface when it comes do Piano Motifs, and I see the developer is constantly adding new stuff to it. I'll probably find some time to dedicate to learning how to actually use it, along with Fugue Machine Rubato (slowly fallign in love with it too) and Patterning 3.

  • Yep, some old Genesis vibes for this one. I dig the progression. The contrast between the peaceful melody and the clanky, crunchy sounds is interesting. Oh wow, cool transition around 2:20.

  • February’s track is an oblique meditation on modern love.

  • Cool exploration of sound and rhythm, very original Tim! 😎

  • Thanks for listening, @azul3D_Apps !

  • Very different, the monthly timescale seems to be really working for you.
Especially liked the transition to the quieter ending after the ‘lively’ first 3 minutes 👌

  • Thanks for listening, Tony! The February track is really an homage to some experimental sample-based artists I like (the Books, Panda Bear, Animal Collective, etc). It uses this pretty neat web site that others here might dig: https://sonicgarbage.greg.technology

  • Finished my track for April early to get it in for April Fool's Day. Performed live in Koala.

  • My track for May is a remembrance of those school dances that were a mix of awkward anxiety and unbridled joyful movement. This track attempts to tell that story, from the frenetic and jittery opening to the slow dance movement in the middle. Take a journey back in time!

This one again leans heavily into @azul3D_Apps Piano Motifs--and yes, it's one long arrangement that I created using the "append motifs" feature of PM. This one layers in some Drum Computer bits and more found sound type stuff for fun.

  • Cool concept and execution Tim @lukesleepwalker! Nice arrangement and instrumentation.

  • Really enjoyable track @lukesleepwalker … well worth the wait 👌

  • This tune has a really unique vibe @lukesleepwalker . Part hip hop, some Latin flavors, a little honky tonk? Can't pigeon hole it which is refreshing. Love the modulation around 1:20. Cool track.

  • Thanks for listening, @GeoTony and @ecamburn! My goal recently is to compose music that sounds fresh to my ears. Once my ears get bored when working on a track, I privilege the “left turn”. Glad to know it translates.
