Note Generator (Alternative to EG Nodes)?

I love the concept of the generator in EG Nodes. In practice, it’s a bit too unpredictable, especially with velocity. I’m wondering if there’s something out there similar but maybe with more parameters or just a bit smoother.

The Rozeta suite has Particles and Collider, a couple of useful note generators with pretty good control.

For something potentially far more powerful, Waymaker is fantastic. It has a whole suite of both controlled and generative sequencers that can be used individually and strung together. Here's a screenshot of the type of control you have over its "Morph" sequencer which is the closest to a pure "random" note generator. You can just fire it up as in the first screen shot, or control it in great detail.

Don't let its potential complexity scare you off. It can be dead simple if you stick to just one module with the defaults.

You can always use midi tools to tame the output in any number of ways. Mozaic and Mela have scripts and modules respectively that can constrain and alter velocity, notes and more to taste.

Slap something like this after almost any crazy or tame generator and make it what you want

Huh, I wonder if this could be done with Drambo? I don’t have Mela or Mozaic.

I’ve considered Waymaker. I need to watch more videos.

Mozaic is only $2 so is a total no-brainer. Probably anyone who does anything with midi could get some kind of benefit from it. Mad useful with a ton of useful free community-generated scripts on Patchstorage.

  • There are a lot of options, especially if you include apps that randomly generate notes

Step poly arp as a sequencer
    Many 4 pockets apps
    Autony
    Several Cem Olcay Apps
    Piano motifs
    Thesys
    Riffer
    Riffler
    Riffler Flow
    Tatat
    Harmony Bloom
    Etc…

Yes Mozaic is a must have app, almost 500 different au midi tools, sequencer, generators, filters, etc. on Patchstorage. Curated on the Audiobus Wiki.

It certainly can. Generating and manipulating Midi is my favourite thing to do in Drambo. I put something together, that lets you set minimum values for density, pitch and velocity and set a range for variation. It lets you quantize the pitch to a scale and quantize the timing. Set the timing slower than the density for polyphony.

It’s kind of an update to something I’ve uploaded to patchstorage a while ago. The stream of unconsciousness 2.0.

There are a selection of scripts that could help with taming the velocity out of EG Nodes note velocity. I don't know what you mean by "too unpredictable" in other ways, but there are probably scripts for those too.

This one is simple and could help tame the velocity output: https://patchstorage.com/midi-scaler-v1-0/. There are others. Check out https://abwiki.loopypro.com/doku.php?id=mozaic_scripts_list#chord_scripts for a comprehensive list.

Aqeel's videos are absolutely worth watching. But probably those three screen shots can give you an idea if it's a good fit per your original post.

Delving into everything that Waymaker can do can be intimidating (and inspiring), but at it's core it's just a collection of single-purpose sequencers that are each simple on their own. It's the ways you can string 'em together that multiplies the possibilities, and thus the learning curve. If you just take any one of them at a time, it's very straightforward.

Thank you, I’ll take a look. I did figure out how to just stabilize the velocity of incoming midi, but something that can control more aspects would be nice.

@a.rabbit Sorry, the patch I posted is no filter for incoming midi, but a generator itself. A filter is possible, too. The velocity part, you've got already, pitch could be transposed into a limited octave range and quantized to a scale. Any other ideas, what you would like it to do? I could look into it later.

Oh I didn’t realize it was a generator itself. Even better! I’ll check it out

This works great, thank you very much. A couple questions though if you don’t mind.

I’m not quite understanding how the scale quantize is supposed to work. I’ll select certain notes and it’s playing notes that aren’t selected. And with the scale knob, how am I supposed to tell what scale is selected?

I also have the clock synced to host, but it keeps generating notes even when stopped. Is there a way to get the transport fully synced so that notes are only generated if it’s playing? I’m extremely new to Drambo and spent quite a bit of time trying to figure this out.

  • Cool, glad you like it:)

About the scale quantizer... it should only play the notes that are white, can't check right now, but wouldn't know what to do about it, if it didn't.

The scale knob scales the input, so the higher the value, the higher the notes it outputs, it does not refer to musical scales. I plan to work a bit more on the patch before I put it up on patchstorage, and add a proper scale selector, on top of user definable scales.

The gates for the notes are generated by an LFO, so that's why it's always on, independent of the transport. I could put an on/off switch in, and on top of that will think about how to link it to transport.

Ah gotcha. Yeah I figured out I could set the scale on the instrument track so that’s working just fine now. Super cool that you know how to do all this stuff :D

I’ve put a new version that only runs while the transport is on with scale quantizers and a couple more niceties on patchstorage(: I also did a walkthrough video.

    Thanks:) And take care, you might find other uses, I hardly use any other host on iOS anymore (;

Have experimented with a lot of these. Riffer is really good but I get the most musical results from 4Pockets MidiStep.
