AUV3 apps that support Apple Pencil (Or point out ones that don’t?)

So I finally bought myself a new Apple Pencil Pro to go with my shiny new 13” IPad Pro M5 2TB edition.

I’ve always wanted to get one for art and drawing apps, for note taking of course, but also wanted one to be able to get to those tiny controls on some of the lovely synth apps that we are graced with these days.

One synth app in particular, when I bought it and first tried using it was Waldorf’s Blofeld… I thought to myself “dang, I need to get an Apple Pencil for this!”…. but, much to my disappointment, the dang thing doesn’t work with it. I can move the controls, but when I release, the knobs and controls instantly snap back to where they were. :’(

With over 1000 AUV3s on my iPad, I’ve been going through them one by one, to see which respond well to the Apple Pencil Pro, and which ones don’t. I’ll start making a list and share it here soon.

Any tips or settings I might need to change to make it work on some apps are welcome!

Also, with me being a first time, and brand new user of the APP (Apple Pencil Pro), are there any art or paint apps that you might recommend? I mean besides the obvious Procreate, Pixelmator, and I also have Feather (3D painting) and a few others. In other words, if you’ve discovered any hidden gems out there, please share!

  • I don't have an original apple pencil, but a cheap one without pressure, but an art app I enjoy to use with it is this:

    https://apps.apple.com/de/app/infinite-zoom-art-void/id6757370793

It lets you paint while zooming, which I found fun (although not really precise).

  • As far as the synth apps go, Waldorf’s Microwave is a no go as well. I suspected as much, being the same developer and all.

Also no pencil support in Discovery synth. (Another one that would greatly benefit from it!)

Hmm, in both AUv3 and stand-alone my Pencil works fine for tweaking settings in Blofeld and Discovery apps?

Only time I have noticed/remembered the Pencil not working is the preset window of Audio Damage stuff

+1 for Procreate. amazing app that I tend to use for shopping lists, to-do notes and hastily scrawled hardware MIDI/audio routing diagrams :D

  • I rarely use my pencil with music apps, if it’s needed I would generally just avoid the app, but I just checked Blofeld AUv3 with Apple Pencil. No weird snapping back of controls at all for me, seems to work fine, this is not with Pencil Pro mind you, just the regular 2nd Gen one

  • A small pointed capacitive stylus always works.
I hardly use my apple pencil.

I have no issues with Microwave or Blofeld using my Apple Pencil?!

...Is Your Apple Pencil the on that does to hovering thing? If Yes, turn that function off...

Apple Pencil 1st Generation here, no problem with Blofeld in either standalone or AU versions.

Not quite sure i understand your main question really @Edward_Alexander? I don’t think I’ve encountered any AUs that don’t support the Pencil. Maybe occasionally something like double tap to reset parameters to default doesn’t work with the Pencil but generally, if they work with a finger touch, they work with the Pencil.

Occasionally there are apps which work better with a Pencil and sometimes apps have features which utilize the Pencil’s sensors though. I don’t know why all synth apps don’t implement this but it’s definitely worth having a play with Animoog Z responding to changes in the Pencil’s pressure on the onscreen keyboard. Pressure response is possible as an option in KB-1 and TC-Data as well. I don’t know but there are probably apps which respond to the extra features your fancy Pencil Pro has as well, barrel roll for example.

That app has had so many features added since release, certainly a very interesting app.

Others worth looking at (all well known I think so no ‘hidden gems’) - Infinite Painter, Adobe Fresco dropped its subscription and went free a while back, Sketchbook, ToonSquid, Rough Animator, Nomad Sculpt, Looom (allows bpm timing for animation which is helpful), Procreate Dreams, Affinity Photo 2/Designer 2/Publisher 2 are free now I think as will be the new Affinity Studio once it’s released.

Generally speaking, digital painting apps are a bit like DAWs: pick one and learn how to use it, they all pretty much offer the same things really. Just depends which one clicks with you.

Animation apps are more of a mixed bag depending on types of animation possible in each app.

Ah! The hover thing.. got it!

  • Music wise the one that benefits the most from the pencil (for me, YMMV) is MiRack. Saves a lot of zooming in and out otherwise.

Yeah I guess that new hover feature is what was throwing my “new pencil user experience” off, where I thought some apps worked with the pencil and some didn’t. I don’t know, I never used one of these before. I turned that feature off in settings, and now every app works like it should.

Nice! Thanks, I’ve been trying to see what advantages it brings to my Drambo workflow as well.

  • I would’ve recommended Pen2Bow but it looks like that got delisted about a month ago.

I’m pretty sure mirack added pencil functionality where double tapping the pencil will let you undo. It was that or Audio Evolution Mobile, but I’m pretty sure it was mirack.

  • If you like 3D sculpting apps look at Nomad. It’s a 10/10. If you like pixel art check out Pixquare - it’s probably a top 5 app of mine.
