Guitar pedal to connect to iDevice

edited May 18 in Hardware

Kinda got a full pedal board going on, but missing a lot of my iPad/iPhone FX and instruments so I’ve been wondering if there’s a low friction way to connect one (either USB C or lightning) via some sort of interface pedal. I’ve jury rigged an AB pedal to an old irig interface which does work, but involves another PSU, and input/output leads as well as the USB cable (which is as flakey as the ik ones have ever been tbh) so I’d love a simpler setup.

Ideally just an interface with a footswitch to totally bypass it with a USB connection somewhere easy to reach that I can Velcro into a sweet spot in the old board… if it’s able to power said iDEvice then doubleplusgood!

  • Ah nice one, that’s opened the door, I spotted the xsonic xtone as well as the Harley Benton mp-500/ts-mega as a result of searching for the hotone. Somehow missed all of this stuff over the years…

  • I got the xsonic and I like it a lot

Ahh that’s good to know, I was literally just about to mention I’m reading about the MIDI switches being release only, and that I’ve seen that the expression pedal interface steps the input so you can’t get a smooth response.

I also can’t tell if these will power the iPad/iPhone or not…

Xsonic definitely does NOT power the iPad.

The switches - not sure what is meant by release only, I’ve had no problems using them as a “real” pedal in live situations.

In terms of expression, I’ve only used it for volume swells mapped to a gain node in AUM and again, no problem.

Ah good to know on the volume pedal, I’d like to use it for filter/wah type effects…

The release only thing I’ve seen is trouble when you’re using loopers as you want to start/stop loops in time and it’s tricky doing that with a release motion rather than a press motion…

Is the sound ok as well? Might be cork sniffers but I’ve seen a whole thread elsewhere with people having ditched both this and the Harley Benton one complaining about the noise floor…

[edit] maybe I should just try one out, spotted a cheap used one from a reputable online place with good return policies…

I’ve seen some here too about noise floor from our good friend @JoyceRoadStudios - may be worth checking out. I will say we try to keep noise to a minimum when we are live, and I have not had an issue, but it might depend on your routing situation.

Totally get that with release. I was hoping to try some looping soon with something like Circa Looper, but it isn’t part of my regular workflow.

  • Have a look at an Orange OMEC teleport - it's a pedalboard pedal that works as an interface. I built a pedalboard to go device free on occasion... but then weakened and got one to add iOS if needed (and bypass if not). £50 ish second hand.

Oh nice one, they look pretty good, small robust and likely sound good given the orange moniker… leaning back towards the Simone after exploring the budget all in ones as I already have a blueboard so could press that into service if/when I want more control…
