Drone Day 2026 (30 May)
It's coming in about two and a half weeks. Time to dust off your modulars, or whatever DAWless setups you have, or tape machines, or AUM, etc to record and perform your Drone music live. Or you can produce your Drone music in a DAW if doing so live isn't your bag. Either way, I hope all you kindred Ambient heads will join me on 30 May for Drone Day! ❤️

I’ll be hosting drone day here in my studio in Patagonia, last year about twenty people joined to droning here! 🎛️🎹🤍🛸
Oh hell yeah! 😎 I'm so happy to read that. Drone Day, I plan to go at least 30 minutes in AUM using Koala's multiout and a few effects, hoping to fit the new Spectral Resonator by Bleass somewhere in there. Maybe also muck about with Rymdigare on another one of the tracks. I got a 13" M3 iPad Air, so plenty of screen realestate.
That’s the day of my birthday party. I’ll have to make some time to do some droney stuff beforehand.
Happy early birthday! 🎉
Thank you! I’m trying to figure out if there’s some sort of musical gift I’m going to get myself. I already have a drone flute from I Am Sound. Maybe something percussive.
Something percussive could work.
I’m not a fan of drone or ambient. But I do occasionally enjoy a challenge. That being said, I like some of the stuff that Heilung does. Wiki mentions ambient as one of their genres. Would something like this work?
Hmm, I'm not sure as I never heard of Heilung before. However, you should give it a shot.
I'd like to hear what you'll come up with.
Do watch some of their videos if you have a chance. The presentation is awesome
Good call, mate.
I'll do that.
One of my favorites from them. Droning horns, chant, tribal drums.
Personally nore excited for international joke day and Caleum Audi0's potential offering.
July 1st
Cool!
I like International Joke Day too, but please keep this topic about Drone Day and things related to that. ☺️
Incredible, thanks…. Real instruments! Bone , wood and leather? Far out who would of thought?!
I might start work on my Drone Day piece tomorrow. My sister invited me to visit her on Saturday, and I don't wish to cram a load of work into the space of a mere couple of hours.
I’ve poked at it a few times this week and have a handful of sounds I’m liking. What is the preferred presentation for this project? Sequenced song? Recorded live jam? Not into video so not an option.
Live jamming seems preferred according to the website, but uhhh, I may end up sequencing it instead. 😂 I think so long as it's Drone music (or at least contains a drone), you should be alright mate.
My piece for this year:
Heatwave (Drone Day 2026)

Hope it’s OK to post here, this was recorded using AUM and piped through Rymdigare, but instruments were all hardware. Make Noise Easel (which I’ve now had for about a year) and Tape & Microsound Music Machine (recent purchase, just starting to get to know it).
Video made on iPad using VS2 (first time using it, hence not much moving away from presets) and finished in LumaFusion.
It feels good to get a finished piece out into the world, I’ve a large backlog of stuff, some of which, at least, deserves to see the light of day.
@bygjohn Of course it's OK to post that glorious piece of music here! What a treat to come home to after I got my haircut today.
@jwmmakerofmusic Thanks for having a listen and nice comment!
Oh that’s cheating @bygjohn , sneaking in a day early 😊
I’ll let you off though as it’s so good 👌
An excellent title as well given how hot it’s been… just getting my drone ready for tomorrow !
Thanks Jim for starting the thread 🙏
@GeoTony Just seen your comment on YT: thank you! Looking forward to hearing your piece.
I recorded mine on Monday in a sweltering home studio. Just after I’d finished the iPad stopped charging as it was overheating! So was I, TBH.
I'm looking forward to hearing yours tomorrow. I have to "cheat" too since my sister invited me out to her place tomorrow. 😂 In fact I'm recording mine as we speak.
And it's complete! As I said, my sister invited me over tomorrow, so had to "get 'er dun" a day early. 😂 I really love what I created. Tagging @Pierre118 and @rottencat to keep an eye on this thread. ❤️
Will do, Jim
Cheers mate.
As someone who hasn’t really made drone music before, any tips for trying my hand at it? I know that’s broad, but maybe a quick and dirty AUM/Koala setup for me to practice something with? I have a solid collection of spectral and time effects, and I feel like Outgrowth, SampleWiz, or similar sampler instruments would be handy.
Would guitars, banjos, or harmonicas be good to sample? A snare drum?
Love the way the intensity builds in this as the textures get more metallic before calming down again. Lovely!
Thanks mate.
It was a lot of fun to make once I had everything set up.
Give me some time, and I'll give you a full answer here.
