App Idea: Dedicated Noise Synth

edited May 26 in App Development

I'll never have the time to learn all of the skills necessary to make this happen, but I'd love to actually use this, so figured I'd share it here in case it inspires anyone.

I'd love to see a synth entirely dedicated to noise. As I've gotten more into ambient, my appreciation for the power of noise has grown immensely. But most noise options I've come across are pretty basic and limited. I think there would be tremendous value in having a dedicated noise synth with just as much control as a regular synth.

I'm imagining a logarithmic density knob that would let you go anywhere from the scattered, sparse clicks of vinyl to a solid wall of static. I could see attack and decay controls for each "particle" of noise, so that you could have heavy rain on a tent-type sounds or soft, distant waves. There would be LFO and randomization modulation options, including value range knobs, allowing everything from swelling tides and sweeping rain to a broken geiger counter being thrown down a hallway of doors lined with either lead or uranium. And EQ knobs for high, medium, and low would also create the opportunity for white, pink, and brown noise (and the other colors in between).

I'm sure there's even more that could be done here, but this is what I've immediately thought of.

Oh, and for a name, I think it's an absolute shame that no one has capitalized on the whole white, pink, and brown thing to make an app called Neapolitan.

  • My pre-boomer brain can't handle the static, hissing of additive noise. It always sounds like a distinct hiss placed on top of a proper sound.

I do like Paul's pink, brown and white noise in Oscadia, but it's subtle.

    Great name tho!

  • Igor Vasiliev’s NoiseSpace doesn’t fit the bill?

  • auGEN X has fairly comprehensive noise-shaping options for white and pink noise.

Definitely fair. It took me years to appreciate it too, and it was only when dialing into a specific type of ambient that I really gained an interest.

Hadn’t heard of it. It seems like it possibly could, but the UI definitely doesn’t appeal to me or make it feel approachable.

auGEN X seems interesting but is still limited to white and pink and isn’t designed specifically for noise. I have a strong appreciation for apps with a specific use case.

  • Iceworks Lagrange has an interesting range of noise types in its Noise oscillator.

  • That should do it, no!? I know Jakob Haq was very happy about it.

I beta tested and also used this in one of my tracks, it's a small little wonderful app (AUv3 too): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/chime-turn-noise-into-music/id6692633791

We need a millennial effect. Maybe something to imitate a disk skip when using a portable CD player, or installing malware when downloading from limewire

  • I'm cooking something up in Drambo, that's coming along nicely. Crickets, ocean surf, sizzling pans, all sorts of bubbles, the eeriest winds, it's all in there(:

@FizzyLizzy27 for your first suggestion, look here:

That’s so funny. Reminds me of LineHum, and someone asking in the thread why anyone would get that effect when they tried so hard to remove LineHum from old recordings.

    Yup! Skippdisk

  • Well, what's cooler about it than the real thing is, you can just turn it off. But the real thing might have given d'n'b people some ideas...

  • @tyslothrop1 let us know once available.

    Thx boss.

I just saw that korg module/gadget has a new expansion called "noise harmony"

I'll demo it and report back- I doubt I'll like it.

An Igor app feeling unapproachable? Whaaaaaaaat?!

  • I chuckled too.

  • I love the direction of this conversation where I present an idea I’m excited about and everyone is just like oh well you could probably do the same with these other apps. When y’all know damn well you’d buy this app if it came out tomorrow and justify it to yourself by talking about how it’s different than all the others for XYZ reasons 😂

  • Hexaglyphics is bigg fun. Not an AUv3 plug-in, but very playable.

I think you just might, it surprised me in any case and I just might go for it. They engaged the modwheel in a lot of the presets, I like that. Hard to tell it's noise based with those clear bells what not.

  • befaco have this eurorack module:
    https://www.befaco.org/noise-plethora/
    unfortunately it's not in mirack.

The evolution on Crack, Snapple & Pops or something else?
This one with The Devil’s Tinnitus is pure lovely chaos

  • I find that Relic Waves fits that bill pretty well : https://apps.apple.com/us/app/relic-waves/id6472637691

  • @senhorlampada Cheers, it's gonna be as exploratory as the two other patches, but apart from that different, no feedback but more noise flavours. I'll put it up soon(:

  • A quick preview:

Sick! Okay well apparently I never need to get an app, just wait for your Drambo patches 😅💁‍♀️

  • Oh, forgot to update on that korg expansion- it is not what you are looking for. I struggled to find any static, hissy presets in the lot. The bells as mentioned were very pristine. Odd naming choice.

  • Theres also a newly released app called Tone Noise its a free AUv3 noise generator. IAPs are tips only.
