Hi @FizzyLizzy27 . Okay, here's my full answer. One tip I can think of is that if you want to make 100% drone music, you need plenty of layers. Think of a drone as one prolonged pad sound made up of various sound sources.
I made my track above using various AUv3s resampled into Koala pads (one AUv3 sound per pad). (If I recall correctly, I used Megalit for a couple of the higher pads, Lowtone on the lowest pad, Kiev (from Korg Gadget) for the second lowest pad, Flowtones for the mid pad, and Iconica Sketch's Tremolo Strings for a pad). Each pad contains a single note or a single chord sound. You can add effects to an AUv3 when resampling into a Koala pad via a synth's internal effects and/or via the Master channel.
On each pad, I turned "loop" mode on, turned on "loop point" and slightly turned up "crossfade loop" on all the sounds. Then I went painstakingly through each sound to ensure the sound looped as seamlessly as possible. (Turning up crossfade loop too much can smear the sound when it loops, and having it off makes the sound loop back in a jarring manner, possibly creating a pop or a click along the way.)
Of course I EQed each sound using Koala's per-pad 3-band EQ to clean up the low end.
When it came time for playback, I sent all six sounds down Buss A and added two reverbs (Stratosphere Cloud Reverb followed by Alteza) and Reelbus' "Canadian Boards" to said Buss A. Then on the Master Buss I added a utility plugin, BarkFilter in Tripleband mode, DDMF's NoLimits 2 to shave off -1dB, and Youlean's Loudness Meter. (I can't believe I can do all this now since a week or two ago! Marek is GOATed for adding AUv3 hosting in Koala Sampler!)
Then I sequenced everything in the sequencer. Basically 16-bar-long notes in 16-bar loops. The first 16-bar sequence had the bass drone and low drone playing at the same time at 100% chance. In the next 8 16-bar sequences, I had all sounds playing at once, but all sounds were at 55% chance except for the bass drone. The final 16-bar sequence was the same as the first 16-bar sequence.
All I had to do then was select "record song", press "play", and sit back and listen while Koala did its thing.
This however was my approach to crafting this piece of Ambient above. Your methods may vary from mine, which is perfectly legit as there's really no one "correct" way to make Ambient.
Well done, both sound and video.
Interesting, may I ask why?
Because that's what I wanted to do.
I wanted to layer two reverbs that excel at two different things.
Thanks! It was fun to do. I should give a special gold star or something to Rymdigare: that app is incredible, in this case it acted as the glue that held the rest of the stuff together. It was OK but not quite there until I added Rymdigare.
Here's my contribution, I did however post it in a thread of it's own as well. Is there something more one should do like add it somewhere. The Drone Day site seem more about performances but what do I know (not much!)
This was phenomenal! 😎
Ok...
Wow! Beautiful textures, and the video is amazing.
Here’s mine.
Happy Drone Day, everyone!🙂
Roland Sp-404 Mk2 fed into Ableton 12. Watch your speakers the sub drone can get nasty.
Here is mine. It’s a first for me 😀
And here is mine…
The first sound heard is a a recording I made a few weeks ago of the local council’s pothole filling lorry. It’s been slowed down and re-pitched to fit the music. The details of the other sounds / apps used are in the video description.
Just a note - I can't wait to catch up with the pieces of music tomorrow!
I'll be listening and responding to each one.
Well, here's mine...
Excited to listen to everyone’s contributions when I get the time. Here’s a short I did of mine. Full song is recorded but won’t be able to make a video for a couple days.
I did three drones: Artifacts, Mononoke, and Hilda. Rymdigare on all three because it’s my favorite. Using LFOs mostly on cutoff to get some movement happening.

Recorded in AUM. AnimoogZ, Fundamental, Waverley Tables, Kombinat4, AD Descent, Phonolyth Cascade, Velvet Machine, UA Tails, Frostbite 2, Mixbox.
I was inspired to make another.
I was inspired to make another.
(I'm writing these as I listen to each piece.)
@rottencat The first piece was so haunting and tense, like the soundtrack of walking through the Back Rooms. Update - The second piece has a similar vibe, but with a bit more "immediacy". Both are brilliant pieces. ❤️
@SirMcp An interesting take on Drone Day, complete with spoken word. I like this take. ☺️
@NTKK That's your first drone piece ever?! This amazing 20-minute soundscape of industrial bliss?! I'm absolutely impressed! ❤️ Followed on Soundcloud.
@GeoTony A very soothing and relaxing Drone piece. I could exist in this "world" for days on end. 😌
@lasselu The fast-paced synth stabs were an interesting choice to set this apart from other Drone pieces. ❤️ I wish the piece as a whole lasted longer, but what was produced was very well done.
@a.rabbit I'm looking forward to the full piece you'll make! The music in the short sounds promising.
@Dominion_Harmonics I really love the sci-fi feel of this one. Like being on a space craft headed towards the moon in space.
Cheers Jim, I’ve just finished listening to all the tracks and your comments echo many of my thoughts… have left comments on the actual tracks rather than here… fascinating how different they all are despite the common brief !
@jwmmakerofmusic @GeoTony
Thank you both for listening and commenting. You guys are prolific and talented members and it's nice to get feedback from you. Everyone really did have something unique to offer. Enjoyable listening all around. Regards!
Thank you, @jwmmakerofmusic
Exactly! I like that each track has its own uniqueness to it while remaining in the same subgenre of Ambient. It's awesome.
Thank you so much for your kind words, mate.
Of course.
I'm a sucker for the unexpected.
Those quick synth stabs were unexpected, but in the best way.
Thanks a lot for listening and the comments 😀
Looks like I’m a day late. Does this count as a drone composition? I have a 16 bar MIDI sequence that repeats multiple times. It never changes from the start to the end. Over the top, I am putting random sequences that change every 4 bars, using different synths for each one. The end result will be a repeating “drone”, with constantly changing chaos over the top. I can easily make this extremely long. I’m at about 4 minutes now.

I'm sure it's debatable. As I understand it, a drone has a single root note or tonal center over the course of the piece. Movement, typically, comes from modulation. It can contain the tonic and the fourth or fifth, for harmonic interest. More like static tonal clusters, not so much structured chord changes. Smearing phrases with reverb is often used to blend different elements back to the tonal center. Btw, I really dig your productions, generally.
@Dominion_Harmonics It definitely has a tonal center of Ebm. I could probably process it with something like Other Desert Cities. It has some great presets that would mangle it just enough to keep it somewhat musical. Actually, that’s a good idea. Thanks!
I'm looking forward to hearing the results, my friend.
@jwmmakerofmusic @bygjohn Thank you gentlemen, for you kind words. 😊
(just found this in drafts, must've missed to press post)
