This is a short composition built around a theme by @pbelgium played on acoustic guitar. The thing that made this a challenge was the number of different time signatures. He provided a score using standard notation. At first, I tried to recreate it in the MIDI piano roll editor. I soon gave up on that, and decided to work with the audio. I was expecting to try endless tempos until I found one that looped correctly without clicks or stutters. To my surprise, the default 120 bpm tempo in Cubasis yielded 8 measures that looped perfectly. After that, I started adding and deleting until I had something that sounded good… to me. Some of the material came from existing loops that I transposed and stretched to fit. Some came from patterns that I created in the MIDI editor, using assorted synth apps. One of the apps I used was iVCS3, the synthesizer made famous by Pink Floyd and Brian Eno. Fortunately, one of its default presets worked well and spared me the steep learning curve. It’s a beast!

Great track and great use of that loop.
Thanks for listening!
Interesting piece of music.
I like it.
Thanks, Jim. When I got up this morning, I was expecting it to be on page 2. Is it my imagination, or has the Creations section slowed down a bit? I remember back when this was the Audiobus Forum, new pieces were coming in almost hourly.
Yeah, I think the Creations section has slowed down quite a lot. At least there are a few members here who still actively participate in it. I've slowed down my output currently as I'm studying songwriting (which you can see under the "Other Music" section). I can still churn out banger instrumentals, but I want to write words now. Can you believe it? 😂
Not sure how you did that @Paulieworld, but it sounds great! There must be some rhythmical connection between 120 & 84 BPM. The added synths, especially the bassier notes towards the end, change the mood completely, taking it to a darker ambience. Challenge complete, you have a magic touch, going to have another listen. Cheers.
Thank you! Once I figured out the loop tempo, everything else was easy. Fortunately, I didn’t have to work very hard after all. One of the first versions had the strings from Kashmir. I still have the MIDI for that, but muted it. After sleeping on it, I think I might come back and make a few changes. It’s a bit too dense. I don’t know if I like that steady kick drum. It kills the polyrhythmic feel that I was going for. I’ll listen again in a few days. I had to go to my desktop PC to translate your comment. Glad I got it right. Best wishes from your friends in Chicago!
This is a joyful riot of fun and creativity! 😄
Thank you! I love the sound of “Joyful Riot”. That’s a great song title that I might use for my latest experiment in high-speed atonal serialism. Schoenberg at Starbucks.
Have a joyful week!
You’ve done a great job with @pbelgium ’s little track here Paul… kept its quirkiness and fragility 👌
I agree btw that the creations section has slowed down, both posts and comments are a bit like hens teeth at the moment ☹️
It was a fun collaboration. Hadn't done one of those for a while. Back when this was ABF, it seemed as though there were more of the "usual suspects" posting on a regular basis. Oh well, time marches on. I wish everyone the best.
I’m in awe of your concept here. Have you created a new genre - free ambient? And kudos for using iVSC3 too. It’s been on my ‘must learn’ list forever.
Thanks Andy! I like “free ambient”. I can’t say that I actually “learned” how to use iVCS3. I think I just got lucky. When I was younger, I used to get “lucky” more often!
Really nice sounds pop in at just the right moments to keep things fresh. So, excellent composing and arranging. Your aim for polyrhythm is mostly working but I found the main pulsing beat a bit overwhelming. When the guitar peeks back in at about 1:25, it's like an itch in the part of my back that I can't reach. I generally like itchy music so that would sometimes be a compliment but I dunno. It didn't land for me. The back half, though, where the pieces kinda float in and out (say at 2:30 on out) works wonderfully. Nice track overall!
Thank you so much! Under normal conditions, the steady 4 beat works pretty well and helps tie things together. The tricky part is to take an odd timing and try to make it flow. “Take Five” or “Living In The Past” are great examples of that. I have often considered buying something like Pro Tools or Logic Pro to help with things like that. The thing is, I love to take my little iPad to strange places and see what happens.
I will probably revisit this at some point for some tweaking. I was going through a dry spell for a few months and couldn’t come up with anything worth posting. This little musical timing experiment has helped to get things moving again. I’m working on something really bizarre at the moment, and looking forward to hear what people think. Wish me luck!
You don’t need luck— you got this in spades. Can’t wait to hear the new bizarre thing!
