Good synths and effects to use with Koala on iPhone?

What are some good synths and effects to use with Koala in iPhone?

i.e. Ones that run well in the vertical format with the interface having readable text (not squished down tiny text).

Ones that come to mind:
SunVox, because it does everything
Eventide FX
FAC apps

Any others are appreciated!

  • Seeing is believing!

  • Hang on, what? Koala LOADS auv3?

    Yep!

Stuff that looks good in iPhone portrait mode (in AUM at least):

    • Raven Synth (Drawable & Morphable Waveforms) [$7]
    • *Blip Box (16-Pad Drum Synth) [$5 when on sale]
    • Audiothing Fold (Wavefolder) [$3 when on sale]
    • Spiral Chorus [Free]
    • PCM2612 (Bitcrusher) [Free]
    • **Flux Mini 1 (LPF/HPF/Amp w/ Drawable Envelope) [Free]
    • DeePopMax (Maximizer) [$4 when on sale]
    • Muckraker (Distortion), Nebulizer (Tape Delay), Frobulator (Spectral Delay), & Osculatrix (Tremolo) [Free]

*No built-in individual panning; dev has stated that they intend to overhaul the app at some point
**Flux Mini 2 is more advanced but looks slightly worse on a in vertical/portrait mode

  • Even though it’s not optimized for vertical, I do have to give a shoutout to Korg iM1. I think that would be great to pair up with Koala.

  • Korg gadget drums/module pro and audiokit apps are pretty much what I have been using. And BLEASS alpha and mellow sound. It’s nice to have real sounds and synthetic sounds together instead of everything being sampled in. I create the midi and resample the loop and throw it in chopper and it’s like making original music and then sampling it for endless possibilities.

The size of the iPhone makes it tough with apps that have a lot going on.

Mononoke, Solderbox, and Hilda all seem like good options. The controls are a bit small but still workable. Solderbox and Hilda both have their own sequencing options and you can latch on Mononoke for nice drones.

Pure Acid is decent too since you can collapse the different screens to focus on one, and it has the sequencer.

I don’t use Drambo for audio but the interface looks pretty workable.

Also all of the effects I checked seem fine. The scaling is pretty damn nice, so I can’t imagine many apps that wouldn’t work. I guess Battlestation Groovebox is probably pretty tight since Bram says it wasn’t meant for the iPhone anyway, and the UI gets pretty cramped even in landscape.

Hey, thanks. I saw that but because of the way I use the iPad, it didn't click. I thought it was Koala that became auv3. I guess it's been a plugin for years.

  • Totally forgot about the other synths and sound generators from the SunVox developer Alexander Zolotov: Low Poly Synth, Fractal Bits, etc. They work great with Koala on iPhone in the vertical format.

FAC (Fred Anton Corvest) FX generally adapt well to different aspect ratios and are very usable in smaller windows. Drambo too.

I can't imagine trying to use Sunvox in Koala. I can barely handle its layout as a plugin on the iPad.

  • Here are a few that size perfectly for iPhone portrait mode in Koala:

    Low Poly Synth
    Gorilla Synth
    Raven Synth
    ANALOGySAW
    ANALOGySTR
    DynaSinth
    DynaSynth
    TriplexClassic
    TriplexSnapper

Good call on the @Rob_Jackson_Music apps. I think all Rob's apps should be great in Koala.

Edit: I included Raven and Gorilla because their UI is in portrait mode. I can’t find them in Koala’s listed-by-developer AUV3 menu.

+1 for search bar, and even the option to simply list apps alphabetically! Anyway, thank you Koala, for adding AUV3 access. I’ve been having a blast with it!

  • I will say Korg Gadget itself. Ever since version 3, you can load Gadget's internal gadgets as AUv3 into Koala. Each of these being simple to use synths. (Note, you can't use external gadgets like Darwin and Milpitas as AUv3. However, if the external Gadget-compatible app has AUv3 functionality, then it can be used within Koala.)

Last time I checked both iM1 (Darwin) and iWaveStation (Milpitas) both have AUv3 support :sunglasses:

They sure do, but not in gadget form but as the full apps in AUv3 form. ;) That's probably what I meant by "can't use external gadgets unless they have AUv3 functionality". Hoping someday iMono/Poly (Montpellier) gets that AUv3 treatment. That is one sick synth! 😎

Yeah, Mono/Poly as an AUv3 would be sick, in this case I'd actually prefer the 'Gadget' version in favor of the stand-alone as there's something about Mono/Poly's Gadget implementation that just clicks with me

Same here to be honest, lol. Anyways, I wonder what other AUv3s that work well with Koala on iPhone weren't mentioned yet.

These must be ALWAYS present on my iPhone. Desktop level of quality. Absolute gems.

    • Hilda
    • Zeeon
    • Dagger
    • ButterSynth
    • RRS Ivoks
    • July
    • OB-Xd 3
    • Discovery
  • @jwmmakerofmusic :So inside of Koala should I be looking more at Gadget as opposed to Korg Module Pro?

Korg Module Pro is cream of the crop if you can invest the money into its IAPs. Gadget 3 however comes with a great collection of gadgets in AUv3 format. :)

  • i miss gadgets. i haven’t installed it on the newer ipad because there’s so many and they’re cryptically named. but there are some gems. kiev and reclife (?? the drum one, i love that each pad can have it’s own note repeat rate).

Recife? Yep that's a great Gadget! Kiev (the yellow one) which can morph between four distinct timbres is also perfect (and one of my favorites for recording drones into Koala Sampler).

  • Ahh ok @jwmmakerofmusic : Just checking . ..Thanks …I think I have everything except for maybe oasys piano

Awesome! I have Oasys, but only because I'm a stubborn Korg completionist. 😂 I ought to use it in an Ambient piece in Koala Sampler.
