MOUND - Music Generator by Fourtrack.FM (Released)

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mound-music-generator/id6768479656

Neo-dadaism lives on in this collage-based generative music app. Stamp birds and flowers and use paint to make sound effects. Brainstorm chord progressions or jam along!

A collage soundscape sequencer.

MOUND is a unique touch instrument (standalone and AUv3 instrument and MIDI included) that uses collage and paint to generate music.

You get four layers of stamps to populate chord progressions automatically using euclidean sequencing, and up to 6 paintbrush effects to use your gestures for uninhibited sonic combinations.

Features:

  • Four mix channels - chord channel, and three other voices to layer.
  • 100+ soundfont instruments
  • Paint to drive effects — use X/Y and hold to control effects
  • Evolve - mutate your canvas and hear new possibilities
  • Choose key and scale
  • Choose BPM and sequence length
  • FREE Cassette Effect and Granular Delay
Free to play. Unlock the full SoundFont library, advanced EVOLVE
theory settings, and the rest of the spray effects.

Gave it a shot. It is kind of fun in a silly way, but execptionally buggy right now - as soon as I play with the fx, everything glitches out (in an non-intentional way).

  • The words “collage soundscape sequencer” have given me a little semi. That’s right up my alley. But if it’s a bit buggy, I’ll wait….

If it gets updated and debugged properly at some point, I’ll definitely bite too. :-)

  • If the developer happens to pop in, it might be an idea to make one of the presets available in the free version to show what it’s capable of?

@catbox i had no idea this got shared here, but i am sorry to hear you had a bad experience. on my test device and in simulators i experienced no dropouts or glitches but i take undesirable audio artifacts VERY seriously.

can you tell me which device you are using so i can attempt to reproduce your issue?

furthermore, which iOS version are you running?

does this happen 100% of the time? only when you touch FX?

any screenshot / video capture would be greatly helpful. feel free to send additional info to [email protected]

i will also make sure you get a promo code

@Robin2 i am happy in the next update to put some presets in the free version as long as it doesnt jailbreak all the instruments / fx / theory options (my problem to wrestle with just thinking out loud), where the real magic lay.

roughly, where presets shine - especially when you can save them, is when you've settled on a combination of instruments, effects, key, and progression that just sits well together. because of the randomness built into the sequencing, you won't hear it the same way twice

for example think of strings with choir oohs and a pad, or a rhodes with acoustic bass and harp accompaniment, etc.

  • @catbox thank you for bringing the performance issues to my attention. running simulator ipad mini 6th gen i could encounter frame drops triggered by painting. i have put in a number of caching optimizations around the graphical side that should prevent the main thread from hiccuping.

i plan on submitting the patches on Monday and hopefully Apple can review the patched version quickly. i will post again when the update gets pushed.

Thanks for the quick response! That sounds like what I’ve encountered! Heavy graphical glitches to a degree where things turn unusable when using the fx paint.

I’m on 18.7.7 on an 6th gen iPad Pro. I’ll update to the new version when available, and let you know by email if I still encounter issues.

(And super fun app otherwise! It is always really great with apps approaching things a little differently.)

Just a quick update: The dev sent me link to the testflight, and it seems that the graphical bugs are squashed in the upcoming version. :-) Whether the app is of use to you I can not say - it is very quirky, but also very fun - but at least fear of bugs should not hold you off now (or at least when the new version is live in app store.)

  • Thanks @catbox ! I did have a little play around but it was definitely buggy. Might have another try….

    v1.0.1 was pushed out today.

many thanks are owed to @catbox for identifying the graphical bug early AND being a great sport and testing a TestFlight version to make sure the issue was resolved before release

i put in a number of graphical optimizations in this update and some UI cleanup as well

i am happy to keep the conversation open with folks to work on improving the collage + paint experience

other users on reddit have reported having fun loading it as a MIDI AUv3 in AUM with multichannel MIDI out (as designed!) to power non-cheesy soundfonts and use proper beefy synths and samplers instead

i don't see MOUND as something set in stone either, so if there are ideas you have for theory and rhythmic variation options that you don't yet see, i'm happy to incorporate them. i truly see software as something of a collaboration between the developer and the user and am happy to work with people here to create a fun experience.
