back in the days i bought a couple of Pi's for MIDI hub/router jobs – but this never happened because RetroKits released RK-006 in a short while.
thanks for heads up, my Pi's will finally have some good use.
PS. i wonder whether it will work on top of some alternate distro, e.g. Alpine.
Perhaps of related interest: https://abwiki.loopypro.com/doku.php?id=diy_bluetooth_midi_bridge, something fun I did years ago. Runs fine on a Zero W, and should be compatible with the Zero 2 W I would imagine.

The Pico is a different beast, incompatible with the Pi/Zero series but the biggest difference is that you can buy it now, and software support is very good already. You can even run full-blown polyphonic synthesizers on the Pico 2, see:
