Sound of Silence - acoustic cover

A quick live performance, originally recorded into AUM and then mixed in Logic for iPad.

The vocal was recorded into the SM7, and the guitar was recorded direct into the interface from the internal pickup.

I used the Stem Splitter in Logic to remove the mic bleed from the vocal track, so I could process the voice in isolation with compression, EQ, and reverb. This also allowed me to take the guitar that was split out from the mic bleed and blend it with the direct signal to create a more pleasing guitar sound.

There's no pitch correction, maybe that was a mistake😆 The singing isn't perfect, but by my standards this is a decent performance.

I've had an extra 3 years of practice since I last posted one of these. 👴

  • Great job!

  • Good job! The mix came out sounding really clean. I love the Disturbed rendition of this song. If you haven’t heard it check it out! (Though not everyone’s cup of tea).

  • This song brings back good memories. I think I was about nine years old when it came out. I played it on an accordion. Now that was a mistake! Pitch correction doesn’t always “work” and your choice to skip it was not a mistake. Maybe overdub the second vocal part. Just a thought. I agree with @JanKun. You look very comfortable playing it. Very nice rendition of a much loved classic.

I have a spoken word acapella version of this performed by an old Irish poet who calls himself Shamoozey. I might dig it out and have a go at it. What could possibly go wrong?

Yes I've heard it 😆 It's quite different!

Thanks. I don't know if you've heard the second vocal in isolation? It's surprisingly different to what you might expect, far fewer notes in Paul Simon's part. I'd need to figure it out. Art Garfunkel has one of the most incredible voices in rock music IMO, I'm always floored when I listen to him sing.

  • If anyone's curious, this is Paul Simon's harmony part isolated, the melody is surprisingly different:

And this Art Garfunkel's part, the purity of his tenor voice is incredible IMO:

  • This is beautiful, mate. :) What a significantly gorgeous rendition of an already beautiful song.

  • Well, it's refreshing to not just hear a faithful one-take cover of a classic--but I love that you recorded the video to make it personal. Excellent. Is that a B7 vocal mic?

Thanks! I agree that the video helps to ground it in reality :)

The mic is a Shure SM7B, which is a favourite mic for singers and podcasters alike. It's my personal favourite vocal mic (of the few that I've tried), because it's easier to work with than condenser mics for me.

Ha, SM7B, yes, that's what I meant by B7. Boy did I butcher that. But yes, sounds nice. Michael Jackson's favorite vocal mic so you can't be going down the wrong path, right? I recently started using the SM7B myself after years using strictly condensers. There's something I like about the vibe of it, especially with a good hot pre-amp and if I get right up on the mic when recording.

Yes it needs a pre-amp that can deliver plenty of clean gain. The main benefit for me is that the slightly dark tone helps to smooth out any vocal harshness, and because it doesn't pick up every little icky click and smack from the mouth and lips (the way condensers do) you can compress the vocal more aggressively without needing a ton of cleanup afterwards.
