NuSaw - SuperSaw Synth (AUv3 + Standalone, Testflight)

Hi everyone! Here's a first build of NuSaw, a SuperSaw synthesizer I'm working on:

https://testflight.apple.com/join/18gu8s9T

It's focused just on the classic Roland SuperSaw oscillator, based on research and measurements against the original firmware behavior.

It features up to 25 detuned saws + a sub oscillator, built-in drive, chorus, delay and reverb, and a configurable arpeggiator, plus a sequenceable classic trance gate, 3 LFOs and a six point mod matrix.

I've got a lot to figure out here to work out some of the UI kinks (it's hard to fit so much on an iPhone), and pricing / model, but thought I'd share for some first feedback.

Enjoy! Let me know if you make something cool!

A few shots of iphone and other controls:

  • This looks excellent! I’ll dig in.

  • First impression: I like it.

My opinion; don’t do subscription pricing.

  • Pricing: Monies

    Right now I'm waffling between:

    • Paid
    • Free, with AUv3 unlock IAP
    • Free, with ads for my other Apps in the standalone version (how the Testflight is set up now)

good job, I like the filter character, resonnance sounds pretry good - it’s compeltely your own custom model ?

Why 25 voices unison ? In my experience anything above 12-16 doesn’t add anything more to sound, just more DSP processing ;)

I am facing same dilema (free/paid) in synth on which I am working now, biggest pain in ass is that for selling in EU, because of some retarded EU regulation, you have to publish address and PHONE NUMBER !! in appstore … Really annoying as hell..

Anyway good job ,JP8080 isone of my favourite synths and i like this one..

Small criticism - UI for iPhone needs some optimalization, knobs are impossibly small on iphone screen.. maybe allow turn off keyboard and block. knobs resiging bellow some tresholhd, rather decrease spacing between them..

  • It’s a custom implementation of the actual supersaw behavior, yes. And I agree, some ui optimization needs to happen, more soon!

The original supersaw was just 7 so anything above that is however noisy you want to be :) you can always keep them low!

Keyboard can be toggled but then of course you have no keyboard. I’ve played with scrolling panels too but maybe we just need more sub-tabs on iPhone… thanks for checking it out!

As for selling I’m already selling a few apps in the eu so this is purely strategy but I’ll figure something out.

PS i would be remiss if I didn’t mention that using ableist language like that is pretty offensive, even if unintentional. Consider using another word like “stupid” or “frustrating”.

Aah ok i didn’t notice the key button.. without keys it’s relatively ok 👍

    can’t argue with that :-)

Anyway good job. There is no such thing as “too much” supersaw synths 🤣

  • Oo now i realized you made Tapescam ? Absolutely LOVE this plugin, especially the overdrive part ! 👍👍👍

    I like to support developers.

I understand the dilemma of trying to be compensated fairly as well.

I will buy this, but probably wouldn’t if I didn’t get to try it first. Just being honest.

So I think the free with auv3 unlock is probably a good route. Maybe also offer a limited set of presets and no (or limited) user saves with the free tier.

Thanks! And Ambiotica (and Punchline) too! But NuSaw won't include the tapescam drive - this is more akin to the 8080's built-in distortion or a little bit of just analog punch.

  • Just pushed a new build with a lot of improvements: https://testflight.apple.com/join/18gu8s9T

    SOUND & ENGINE

    • Polyphony raised to 12 voices - fewer dropped notes on chords and pads.
    • No more clicks on voice-stealing (especially audible on long pads).
    • 2x oversampling tames the supersaw aliasing (cleaner highs).
    • New master limiter - dense chords no longer distort or clip.
    • Resonance makeup gain so high resonance no longer overloads the output.
    • Smoother, more natural velocity response and glide.
    • Consistent sound at any host sample rate.
    • 12/24 dB filter slope switch on the Filter section (SLOPE).
    • Bipolar filter envelope (it can open OR close the filter) plus velocity-to-cutoff.
    • Sub oscillator is now a free tune (0 to -24 st) - fifths/octaves, not just one octave down.

    EFFECTS

    • Full FX rack: Drive, Chorus, Delay, Reverb.
    • New reverb: a Dattorro modulated plate (replaces Freeverb) with decay/damp.
    • Real ping-pong delay that widens mono (preset-driven).

    MODULATION

    • Mod matrix, new destinations: LFO 1/2/3 Rate plus Chorus, Delay, Reverb and Drive.
    • Sustain pedal (CC 64) support.
    • Every preset has a useful mod-wheel assignment.

    PRESETS

    • Three new Reese bass variants (Growl, Sub, Wide).
    • New KEYS showcase patches (Organ, Electric Piano, Piano).
    • Tempest and Lagoon restored to their original 24 dB filter slope.
    • One-tap install of shared .nusaw preset files.

    UI / WORKFLOW

    • Live ADSR envelope diagram under AMP ENV and FILTER ENV that tracks the faders (iPad).
    • New categorized preset browser (replaces the old popup menu).
    • Persistent waveform scope on every page; it eases in and out with the on-screen keyboard.
    • iPhone: bigger, more tappable Voice Mod and LFO knobs and keyboard keys; redesigned SLOPE control; dedicated FX sub-tab.
    • General reflow and alignment of panel for better balance, especially on iPad.

    FIXES

    • A held note no longer cuts out when you open a mod-matrix / LFO dropdown.
    • The MONO label no longer draws over a knob's value popover.
    • Live octave transpose; reverb mix now routes to the correct slot.
  • just had 90’s flashbacks after playing this thing. it sounds incredible. nicely done sir

  • Really great synth. The arpeggiator is top notch 😎

  • Question for y'all: i assume with the advent of JE-8086 nobody needs a JP-8000 adjacent desktop plugin so am trying to make something mobile focused; would you want this on desktop too? It's definitely easier to set up / a bit more straightforward, but not as "broad" of a synth so assume it's best suited to mobile. Thoughts?

I think it’s worth to release it .. people always like simple synths which are doing just 1 specific thing but are doing it really good.. In theory on desktop you need just Serum 2 and you can make literally all thinkable sounds. With sound design knowledge - infinite possibilities.

But still there is always enough room on market for lot of other less complex synths, cause sometimes you search for simplicity not complexity.

Also there is not much synths with preset compatibility between desktop and iOS and think people appreciate preset compatibility desktop <-> iOS

    New build with:

    • Shadows!!!!! Controls all have drop shadow. Very important.
    • Faders now use black caps, closer to hardware
    • Filter type added to filter panel
    • Tempo moved to its own motion subpanel, always available
    • Motion panel reorganized, adding arp semitone transpose and chance (probability control)
    • Arp now visualizes swing (in addition to semitone transpose and chance)
    • Mod LFO panel slightly redesigned with push buttons
    • Fixed an issue with multiple notes coming in rapid succession not stealing voices appropriately
    • Fixed an aliasing issue on sustained chords with LFOs on larger buffer sizes
  • Unfortunately. The UI layout is not correctly working on my iPhone 16 pro. The keys won’t work. Just for information.

Oh no! And previous builds did? I'll take a look (only have 15 pro here to test). Which OS are you on? And I'm assuming this is standalone as AUv3 shouldn't have keys at all.

  • Lalala, me likey!

Previous build had the same issue. I’m on iOS 26.5.

  • sometimes the keys are working by accident. I’m not sure how different the screen of the iPhones 15 and 16 are.

  • I’m on iOS 27 beta
    iPhone 16 pro.
All seems fine with the keyboard keys. They’re working as should be in my phone and iPad 10.5pro

  • iPhone 16 MAX .. everything totally OK here .. no issues ...

that's a weird layout issue for sure! Thanks for the screenshot, will take a look. Do you have any display /text scale or anything on anywhere on your phone?

Edit: yup, I can repro exactly on "Display Zoom: Larger Text". Will fix in the next build, thank you!

  • Just pushed a new build that should fix the display zoom issue:

    • Preset sharing — the AUv3 plugin and Standalone app now share one user-preset bank (save in either, it shows up in both).
    • Import & Export presets — pull .nusaw files in from the Files app, and share/back up presets out from the preset browser.
    • New pitch + mod wheels and OCT −/+ octave buttons, with bigger on-screen keys.
    • Cleaner oscillators — PolyBLEP anti-aliasing tames high-end aliasing on bare/low patches; the detuned supersaw is unchanged.
    • Tuned Super Saw keytracked high-pass for a clearer low end.
    • Display Zoom support — the UI no longer breaks or clips the keyboard when iPhone Display Zoom (“Larger Text”) is on; it scales to fit.
    • Faders now use relative drag (no jump-to-touch), like the wheels.

  • Yes display zoom now correct. Keys are working fine.

Agreed! Especially useful when transferring projects back and forth between LP4i and Logic desktop.
