Yikes! Can't a guy get a full 8 hours rest without something bonkers happening here in our otherwise quiet little community? 😂 It wouldn't be fitting to pop popcorn at 3am my timezone after all. (I'm joking, obviously.)
@wim , I didn't see it as anything but joking since the whole vibe was lighthearted to begin with. That said, calling someone a "moron" in jest could be taken the wrong way, and unfortunately it was. We must be cautious with what we say, especially in an international forum where many people come from different backgrounds and various walks of life and cultures and such.
That said, you've come too far to just quit, so to echo others' sentiments, don't leave us. If you need a break, that's totally legitimate. We all need to take a break once in a while. If you feel you can't be a moderator here, at least don't leave us. You're one of the most helpful people here and a decent bloke. I know that being a moderator is a thankless job that nobody really wants to do. I sure as hell don't have the brass to take on such a role.
Anyways, Wim, be well in the meantime. Take it easy and come back when you're ready.
Long time lurker here.
Leaving an online community is a big choice, which I have to imagine goes just beyond this one incident. It can take up a chunk of time and mental health being a moderator, and I'm sure all that weighted in the choice.
Without ever interacting with him, @wim has been helpful so I just want to say thanks and good luck and may we indirectly cross paths again,
Mostly a lurker here, but a daily lurker, and it’d be a huge loss if Wim withdraws, IMO.
No shade on anyone else, but his comments carry the weight of in-depth knowledge and experience that would/will be truly missed. Please, for the sake of this group and those who rely on it, can we rethink this?
It genuinely would be one of the worst blows this forum has ever taken, that's no exaggeration.
I'd consider it an honor to be called a moron by @wim .
Jim ( @jwmmakerofmusic ) said everything I was thinking but expressed it far more eloquently than I could have 🙏
Oh boy, if I had a dollar for every time words exited my mouth without a brain inserted I'd own an iPad right now!
Wim apologized profusely... and that's a sign of great character. So, no need to leave on that account . But maybe they are just tired of being so deeply involved, and just want a break. Nothing wrong with that Wim!
You WILL be welcome if you change your mind now, or come back later!
@jwmmakerofmusic Wise words, Jim! Nothing more needs to be added.
@GeoTony @Pierre118 Cheers mates.
In short, @wim , we care about you mate. This thread our mate @Gavinski lovingly started is proof of that.
@wim has been a fabulous contributor of knowledge, advice and wit, and has helped me out either directly or indirectly on more occasions than I can recall. I will respect whatever the final decision is, but I hope that I will continue to be able to interact with @wim here or elsewhere. It’s been so much fun!
@wim You are an MVP in this forum.. the knowledge you share is priceless.. I’ve learned a ton.. chuckled along the way.. taken 100’s of screenshots of the info you’ve given that I don’t want to forget.. you are an irreplaceable piece of this puzzle we call home..
Take a break for a bit.. stop being a moderator if need be.. whatever it takes.. we’ve lost many a good soul here before.. just know that your presence would be greatly missed..
Echoing many others, I hope that @wim doesn’t bail… at least, not for too long.
@wim Try a timeout for days, weeks, etc. If you hurt someone but did so without intention then your apology should suffice to make amends.
Whatever you decide, the loss is ours. If you start to feel a loss too then just know you’ll be welcome back.
@wim your posts have helped me a lot over the years on here fyi, mosaic right off the top of my head but much more. Just wanted to post that.
@wim has also been among the first to try to nail down any random problems I’ve had. No need for torches and pitchforks even of his own decision. Hopefully the regret and embarrassment may subside.
Yeah, it is a shame. He has helped me enormously many times!
What this guy said
Wasn't expecting to see this today, and totally agree with many others and would like to reiterate what @McD said:
What these folk said. Including pbelgium.
Haven't posted anything in ages but I will to say that @wim leaving would be a huge hit and loss to this forum.
Surely it doesn’t have to be this way. My sense is that @wim would never ever intentionally insult any forum member. We all know that he is a massive presence here and it would probably be impossible to total up the thousands of helpful replies that he has given over the years for which a great many are grateful for - all given with good grace.
At the same time I can see why that one reply caused offence - unintentionally as it turns out. Looking back it’s easy to see what happened & I’m sure that @wim would have rephrased his comments had he been thinking about this particular angle at the time.
But we have all put our foot in at some time or other - I know I certainly have. I consider myself to be a decent & well mannered civilised chap - yet I have managed to receive a warning (or is it two?) over comments that seemed innocuous at the time but in hindsight were maybe a bit tasty.
I think both parties have taken this a bit too personally. The recipient though justified in feeling offended at the time could perhaps have cooled a little on it following the acknowledgement & apology provided.
I also think that perhaps @wim is being far too hard on himself about the way it has played out. It’s difficult when a person who is motivated to be helping and looking out for others is confronted with the realisation that they have caused someone else to feel offended to the extent that they have decided to hastily leave the forum. It might well be that you are hurting at the moment @wim, but it was a simple mistake that you have properly apologised for.
The whole thing has ended up causing much more grief than it ever should have.
Let’s put it behind us now and get back to normal - if that is at all possible? Hopefully the chap will rejoin again & whether or not he does @wim might reconsider withdrawing as a moderator…. or at the very least be a regular contributor once more.
Agree with the sentiments here!
Yes, yes, yes. And maybe this would be a good time for Michael to review the policy of allowing members to delete all their posts when they go. I've never been on another forum where this feature is provided; I'm pretty sure most members are not expecting this to be available when they sign up. Nevertheless several people have opted to delete all their contributions when they left.
I'm sure @wim would never opt to do this. But if he did it would leave a massive hole in LPF where the best and most helpful answers in a multitude of threads over many years would instantly disappear. IMO, this "feature" should be withdrawn from LPF.
@wim you will be greatly missed here. Good luck with your future endeavors.
That’s something I can get behind too, and I am trying to minimize my time here as well. It seems like @wim is set on not being talked out of it, and I doubt I can add anything that hasn’t already been mentioned. @wim was one of the few posters that I always took notice of and read fully, I know that this news bums me out and I hope he comes back one day, perhaps even with another username. His absence will leave less reason for me to stop by here.
@wim if you are looking at this thread, and I hope you are and feel the love
FWIW I will say this: something upsetting happened once, between me and somebody and I left the forum…
I don’t remember what it was about now. It probably took a while to forget it, and here I am again
I am more of a longtime lurker here but @wim helped me a lot with a mosaic script he created: he implemented suggestions, was always super helpful and friendly. Check out his patchstorage place, that says it all.
Tbh. found the reaction from this other guy super exaggerated and it was obviously meant as a joke from Wim. From another thread I stumbled upon where Wim helped exactly this guy with a helpful anwser
So yeah, not cool and sad also....
I too have gotten so much insight from @wim over the years. It would be a shame to lose you especially over the incident in question. The other user was overly sensitive IMO and literally can’t take a joke. Don’t leave bud.
