    Sometimes things take much longer than the developer expects. Even though Roland may seem like a big company, the team for this project is probably small.

    That is one reason Michael has stopped giving ETAs; we’ve realized that no matter how “realistic” we try to be in our estimates, we are sometimes far off despite a steady work ethic.

    Even big developers sometimes grossly underestimate time tables for some projects.

    Their desktop plugins are released in VST/AU formats, not restricted to standalone. AUv3 is simply the plugin format for the iPad.

    It’ll come when it comes. If we see a trailer that says “coming this summer”, and it isn’t released until Christmas, we don’t hate the producers of the film. What we have so far is the trailer version of Zenology. Meanwhile we have no shortage of apps on iOS, and maybe full Zenology arrives with Santa. Then we can complain about the lack of other features we want.

    Roland sells hardware: Digital Pianos/Keyboards 27%, Boss/Guitar 24.9%, Percussion & Wind 20-25%, Creation Related Division (hardware & software synths, and Roland Cloud including Zenology) 12.94%. Financially, Zenology GX (PC & Mac) is a micro-fraction of Roland’s total revenue.

    Zenology GX is basically a “loss leader” used to upsell hardware. Roland projects that expanding software access on consumer devices (like the iPad) creates a direct sales pipeline, converting mobile app users into buyers of expensive physical keyboards and synthesizers. Roland evaluates the success of Zenology GX based on hardware synergy rather than direct software sales.

    Will it work? Roland’s total corporate net sales hover around ¥101 Billion (~$660M USD), so I’m not going to say they are doing anything wrong. I was leaning heavily into getting Zenology GX and a new Fantom EX, but decided against it. As a long time collector of Roland synths, I don’t see enough new features to justify it. Sampling on the Fantom EX might have been a nice addition, but I can do that on my iPad. I am now leaning toward a Dell XPS & Omnisphere 3 on Black Friday.

    I think Zenology GX will be great for people who do not already have a lot of Roland synths. I might get it just for the convenience of having it on my iPad, but I am at the other end of Roland’s intended funnel pipeline. Maybe in the 2030’s Roland will bring out some new synthesis types for its hardware line, but I am not holding my breath.

    It’ll be here after the Fantom, Aerophone, Jupiter, Go mixer, Aira, Boutique, TR, MC, DJ, V-drums, GR, Gaia, SH, Juno, JD, JX, JU, JP, SH, SE, TB, AX, XPS, Roland Cloud updates are done. This is a massive company with an extensive product line and they have a lot of irons in the fire.

    You guys have high expectations but being a Fantom owner taught me AND THE SP-404 updates once a year like clock work every April 4. So hopefully this will add some perspective on Roland. You want monthly updates buy AKAI.

    I've had Omisphere 2 for ages. Been thinking about pulling trigger on the upgrade since it is pretty reasonably priced. It would be great to see it ported to IOS. I remember seeing a quote from Eric Persing years ago that that might one day be a possibility. That was way before M1 Ipads were a thing. With that said, what IOS synth do you think comes closest to Omnisphere?

    Nothing does what Erics synth does. The closest thing I have seen to Omnisphere in depth and breath is UVI Falcon. On ios an equivalent being able to mix and match sampler/oscillators with a truckload of effects to boot is a good question. Plus you could spend a lifetime just playing the presets in Omnisphere.
    But what synth do I use that can deliver a big cinematic sound like Omnisphere in ios, Aparillo is one of them but no…they are not Omnisphere. This might sound crazy but before I reach for Omnisphere I usually load up an instance of Absynth the older version. If I am in Logic then Alchemy also gets loaded up before I reach for Omnisphere. Those synths can sound huge and other worldly. They are made for ambient and cinematic music as are a few other gems on desktop.

    Ah! Good to know! That cures my FOMO for Fantom. I can’t wait to get the new XPS and Omnisphere 3!!!

    I noticed that Aftertouch is not implemented yet, but the patches do include them (thankfully). When I export a preset and import it in Zenbeats it works perfectly, but not in Zenology (yet).

    For those who have fantom gas, buy Zenology plus the extra synths and you get the fantoms synthesis engine, pick up the sp-404 and you get better sampling than the fantom and you still save money depending upon which fantom you were going to buy.
