Canon: Chord Composer

Recently discovered this on AppRaven. Here's a quick demo of Canon: Chord Composer, a free songwriting/music composition app for iOS. It's easy to find 'safe' diatonic chord progressions, but the real power of the app is the many 'colorful' and 'bold' chord choices. So far, I've found the chord suggestions and random progressions to be very musical and inspirational.

I wonder how this compares to any similar apps out there?

  • Interesting.

I wasn't really surprised to find that I already had this in my collection of chord apps.

I think the reason I never tried really using it though, was one, the lack of it being an AUV3, and the connectivity, and two, for some reason it crashes when I tap the "MIDI" button.

Just tried the MIDI export and it's working for me on an up-to-date iPhone 17 Pro - Cubasis 3, AudioShare, Media Assistant, Roland Sound Canvas. Maybe worth another look.

  • Crashes instantly when the export midi oder share button is pressed. IOS 26 latest.

  • Yup, instacrash when hitting the midi button…

  • I reported this crash to the developer months ago and never got a reply. Too bad because it’s a neat app.

  • Export works on iPhone for me, but crashes on iPad.

  • Does the chord generation work? That's really all I need it for, just to brainstorm chord progressions.

    Yeah, works fine otherwise.

  • Yea i really like this app. It’s normally $4.99, so grab while its free.

However for some reason i cant get the midi export to work on my ipad, it crashes the app everytime, but works completely fine on my iPhone…

    Yeah, works fine otherwise.

Yea. Can pick em from three suggestions at the bottom, or generate them by tapping the last chord. Set key at top right upon opening.

    Same. Unsure why.

Also, hit the circle-arrow button bottom right to generate random 4 chord progressions to start from. You can extend these using the methods @Poppadocrock outlined.

I found a way to make it work on an iPad. Just make it look like it's on an iPhone. To make it vertical in portrait mode If it's an older iPad, enable split-view mode. If it's a newer iPad with iOS 26, make it vertical, like on an iPhone, rather than full-screen. Then MIDI export will work.

  • That’s a shame, I hope the iPad export gets fixed.

In my opinion, so far, the chord generation works better than other apps on iPhone. Very natural, musical suggestions, all without AI. Here’s what the dev said about it:

    Works, thanks!

  • Yo, this app is pretty sick.

  • Can you preview the chords before adding the chord to the progression?

Not in any way that I can find, but it is super easy to remove it or change it or edit it after it gets added.
With that being said, I’m finding it pretty quirky to try to use it with intent. It is easy to have parts or all of the progression reset or get cropped off the end. I don’t see a way to lock anything down so it doesn’t get re-randomized or cropped off.

It is excellent with suggesting chords and building progressions, but if I wanted to work more intentionally I would reach for a different app that is more of the traditional chord sequencer.

The app goes on sale for free pretty often. It’s $5 at the moment, so possibly wait til it’s free again and grab it. It’s very useful for what it’s good at, which is coming up with interesting, musical chord progressions.

  • I was super suprised how good this little app was…. Havent tried it for a while and didnt notice any of the issues mentioned probably because im not usually interested in more than three or four chords for any ‘verse’ or ‘chorus ‘ i make…. And theres other app that give you the big number chord option . I just like a basic suggestion i can add colour to for todays, you know, cinematic, evolving , soundscape, DNA generating ambient tunes….!

  • I think like the apps developer describes, sometimes you just need 2 or 3 chords to break from writer's block and let loose. This app isn't groundbreaking, does just that. I still reach for Scaler 3 when I need something better.

Scaler 3 looks great! Sadly, it's iPad only.

  • Does anyone know how to access these Chord Decks?

Not sure I understand the question.

Swipe up on the decks for the next card, or choose from lists - it’s very subtle but notice the different colours for ‘safe’, ‘colorful’ and ‘bold’. Note, the decks are for the next chord to be added and the lists can change any of the existing chords in the progression. You can also press the little play button beneath the chord to preview it, and if you press to the left of the chord you can delete all chords to the right.

Thanks for that. I hadn't read the term Chord Decks before so imagined it like a menu where I could literally pick a chord progression. Thanks for informing an old fool.

Sadly, it's a bit of a crash fest on iPad9OS26. Is it just me or would looped playback seem a given?

  • Hey guys, I'm the developer for Canon: Chord Composer. I've heard the feedback regarding the app crashing when sharing MIDI. I think that I have fixed it in the latest release (1.0.2) which should roll out over the next hour or so. Please give it a try and let me know if it works for you now. Feel free to ping me if your issues are persisting or if you have some other bit of feedback you'd like to see improved in the app.

Since we've got you here. After you choose your second chord from the stack of cards and start building out the chord progression, is there a way to delete a chord from the progression without having to delete the entire progression?

There's not a way to simply delete a chord in the middle of the progression, but you can shorten the progression by tapping the last chord you want in the sequence.

A part of my goal with this app was to keep it simple and fun, while still making it powerful enough for musicians of any skill level to get value from it. I didn't want a bloated settings menu, and we're only working with so much screen real estate on mobile devices. Would love to hear any ideas or solutions you all may have for feature such as deleting specific chords. My instinct is to add a trash button to the Edit Chord menu (long pressing a chord in your sequence).
