Module Clavinet sounds

I have been using Korg module mainly for the acoustic piano sounds but spent a little time messing with the Clavinet sounds today and was amused by a control called "keyoff noise." I don't generally like playing sampled Clavinet because I have a real Hohner Clavinet D6 and, yes I'll admit it, I'm a Clavinet snob who thinks no sampled Clavinet has been able to come close to the sound of a real one (yet). These Korg samples sound very cool, but still not realistic.

Anyway, I didn't want to complain about that. But I wanted to point out what I consider a silly feature of the Korg Module Clavinet called "keyoff noise." The annoying keyoff noise made by some old Clavinets is not a feature at all!! It's a defect caused by 40 years+ deterioration of the clavinet's rubber hammers and happens when the sticky hammer suddenly pops unnaturally off the string upon key release.

A Clavinet uses the same mechanism as a clavichord. When a key is depressed, a little rubber hammer underneath the key mashes one of the strings against a metal anvil causing the note to sound. It's similar to a guitarist doing a hammer on. When the key is released, the note is immediately damped.

The annoying keyoff noise that Korg has faithfully reproduced is caused from an old, worn out, sticky rubber hammer binding to the string upon key release and then suddenly popping off causing the unintended and undesirable sound artifact. The problem is fixed by replacing the old hammers with brand new ones. Or just turn the keyoff noise knob all the way down on module. That's a lot easier than replacing all the little rubber hammers on a genuine Clavinet!

I thought it was funny to include this defect on the emulation. Kind of like including a broken, loose and staticky sounding electric guitar jack in an electric guitar sample. Ha!ha!ha!

  • While it technically may be a defect, that wouldn't be the first time something that wear on an instrument gives a character that some may want to be replicated. Look at all the "dirt" controls on NeoSoul Keys, for instance. You may not like it, but some may look for that specific character.

  • Mechanical noises, dirt, tune drift, vinyl crackle, tape noise, tape warble - all the stuff that people used to try to get rid of in the analog days now people are putting those back in to make their digital production sound less sterile and get creative with it like turn up the tape hiss to make the side-chaining more pronounced, I love that shit.
